I had the Kodak 290 which took great photos all the time, indoors or out.

It was stolen in Vancouver so I bought the 4800...rarely got a focused picture...ok, ok it was probably my fault but when it was focused the colors seemed unreal...oversaturated?

Then I got to the point where I hated to pick it up, even bright light, outdoor shots weren't great.

So I received my Nikon 995 today...we're talking Mercedes vs. Yugo.

Pictures inside, in the dark are focused. Tons of features. It cost $300 more but it's worth it. I'm not knocking Kodak...the 4800 just wasn't for me. Anyone in Southern California want a good deal on a 4800?

Ra, I agree too. Got my 995 in yesterday also. No Comparison. Rolls Royce to a Yugo. The DC4800 wasn't for me either. Jerry

You just needed to read a little guys in here and things would have been great with your DC4800. I got my DC4800 and yes it takes awsome pictures out of the box outside but inside needs a few manual changes and things also look great for indoor shots as well. The 995 you talk about it way over priced compared to what you get with the DC4800 for much less!

It's a personal preferance option. You can turn saturation off. I actually like the oversaturation.

My 4800 takes focused pictures all the time except when there's not enough lighting (caused by slow shutter speed). If I enable the flash, it'll focus in the dark regardless of the focus light warning.

Maybe more of Mercedes and VW, not a Yugo. I'll pick up a Nikon 5-6MP in a few years when the prices come down. I always like what Nikon offers, but the asking price is a bit high. The Kodak 4800 ($360 after rebate) will work for me in the next two years or so.

Of course, if I see a 995 for under $500 I'll jump on the deal immediately...

How about sharing your manual changes with us to get better indoor shots. What settings are you using?

Bess,

I have had some luck changing my settings to ISO100, F2.8, and shutter speed 1/60. This has made vast improvements to my indoor shots. By the way I picked up this tip by searching the forum for low light or blurred pictures. There may be some other suggestions if you try searching for either of those key words.

The Nikon 995 is a nice camera. But a Rolls Royce. Look under the hood. Its 3.3 meg when all the competition (in the same price bracket) are putting 4 Megs in.

I have a Nikon 990, but would not upgrade to the 995 as it too has it problems compared to the 990 and its overpriced for as 3.3.

Yes, its a nice camera, but it could have really good, if Nikon had put a little more thought into it.

However, no camera is perfect, so just enjoy the photography.

I agree with Paul. If you read Phil's review of the 995, the following are
his "cons" with it (including poor low light AF):

"Conclusion - Cons
  • Lens distortion quite apparent (both barrel and pincushion distortion)
  • Chromatic aberrations are still visible (same level as 990)
  • Corners of frame can sometimes appear un-sharp (lens)
  • Relatively "slow" lens (F2.6 - F5.1) compared to some of the competition
  • Number of shutter speeds / apertures in manual mode is now looking dated
  • CF Type II support but not Microdrive (slow and not officially supported)
  • Low light AF is poor, still needs an AF assist lamp
  • LCD screen needs an anti-reflective coating
  • Histogram not implemented in review mode (though can be accessed by pressing the Quick Review button twice)
  • No RAW format option
  • Probably won't be seen as enough of an upgrade by existing 990 owners"

Nascar24,

Lets compare pictures sometime. Hard to compare on an equal basis because the 4800 can be had for $350 (plus tax) and the 995 was $720 (no tax).

Man. Try to remember how old the DC4800 is. I guess Kodak is going to take this incessant beating until they come out with a replacement for the DC4800 - which may not happen. I don't have a DC4800. I'm making do with a scratch-n-dent 1.6megapixel DC265 I got for $140. I love it. My previous camera was an HP C200 1megapixel camera. Much worse than my DC265. However, it did a good job for its price and I liked it despite its shortcomings. Of course, in 1 year you'll be able to buy cameras twice as good for the same price. One thing I don't feel the need to do, though, is find a forum of HP C200 users and berate their camera.

Maybe a year or so from now, I'll find a used DC 4800 for $200. And I bet I'll be ecstatic with it.
Here are some pictures I took with the DC265, if you're interested:

You can also find there some pictures I took with my old HP C200. You can get those now for under $200. CompUSA was selling them for $100 after rebate, buth they're probably sold out. I sold mine on ebay with an accessory lens adapter and accessory wide-angle lens for $150 (yes - I actually made $10 in the transition to the DC 265 - but I feel extremely lucky to have found the DC 265 for the unusually low price I paid for it at Best Buy).
Think positive.

Had a DC260 and have a DC290 and DC4800, had a DCS315 and now have a Canon D30. I wonder how your CP995 compares against the D30 in much the same way that the DC4800 compares to the CP995. This is comparing a less than US$400 against one that sells for twice as much.

Heres the link to good pictures with your DC4800 indoors! It corrected the problems I was having with indoor shots!

That would be fine with me. I really doubt your pictures look that much better than the DC4800! You just have to take the time to learn the controls of this camera to get good shots out of it! The 995 is a Oldsmobile at a BMW's price!

Hmmmmmm. Sounds like a lot of the same problems listed for the DC4800 at a much higher price!

Think positive.
Just to let you know, I blamed the 4800's problem on myself. I bought the camera last month...to me that is a new camera...if its design is antiquated then it should be cheaper.

My point was that I personally never got along with my 4800 and when I opened the box of the 995 it was love at first sight...the pictures just solidify the relationship. I thought I was being informative...for anyone sitting on the fence.

I wish the 4800 had 'done' it for me...I would have the extra $300 to spend on my vacation. I spent a month reading the Kodak forum and never read the Nikon forum so I felt more at home here..

Appreciate your thoughts... Thomas does have a good point though. I bought my 4800 in April but understood that it is two year old technology which is a long long time in this area of electronics while the 995 is new technology. It aught to be better... Alot better. It will be interesting to compare it to the new Kodak 4800 replacement.

I thought the 4800 took good quality pics, and the colors were one of its strongpoints. However, I switched to the S75 because it has a better lens, can take much cleaner, clearer pics and performs much better in low light.

In my opinion, however, the 4800 is underrated. I've seen pictures people have taken with it that rival anything I've captured so far with my S75. If you know how to use it, you can take some great images...

I never considered buying the 995. It cost more than my Sony, and according to Phils review and elsewhere, the lens quality really isn't spectacular...
