Hi folks,

right now I'm still saving every spare euro I can, in order to buy a 20 inch iMac G5. During this period I'm doing research into which software is best for my iMac and what accessories I'm going to buy with it, a lot of good idea's come from this forum right here.

However, in my searches, I've learnt that many prospective buyers are waiting for the iMac 'Revision B'. The supposedly soon (?) to be released update of the current iMac G5. Since I'm still saving up in order to buy, I might as well wait for that revision myself.

I was wondering just how many people on this forum were waiting on this update, and what they were expecting or even what they are hoping (against all hope?) for in this revision.

Personally I wouldn't mind a faster G5 processor. I hope a 2.5 GHz but that's probably out of the question, right?

Please contribute in this thread, your most accurate prediction and if you want maybe your most wild prediction too :)

Cheers,

Sander Meurs

Hi Sander,

Apple is having some serious issues trying to cool down the 1.8 Ghz iMac's so i don't know how they would go about cooling a 2.5 in such a small enclosure unless they totally change the physical appearance of the new iMac's when they come out. On the same note i think that the design is still too fresh for them to be messing around with it too much. My prediction is that they might perhaps update some of the hardware, such as the super drive, and finally start shipping iMac's with 512 Mb of Ram instead of the laughable 256.

Hope you can get your iMac soon....i'm loving it and only wonder why i waited so long to switch to the "dark side"

Sander,

Same predicament here. I've been looking at the iMac for several months, and decided to hold off for a while.
My wish list.

Faster processer. That's a given, but how fast is the question. Don't think we'll see 2.5. 1.8 and 2.0 are my guesses.
Bigger internal HD. Not sure we'll get it.

Better graphics card. For the occassional gaming experience. I think this will be included.
Firewire 800. Doubt we'll see this.

More stock RAM. 256MB is kinda silly. I think they'll spring for this one.

Better screen. Cause we can always use a better screen.

Airport standard. I know we won't get this one, but no big deal.

Standard Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Hey, we can dream can't we.

All this at the same, or lower base price. hahahahahaha.

OK, seriously, faster processor, better graphics card, 512MB stock RAM. Same pricing as now.
I'll say before July, or "soon".

I have the previous iMac (iLamp) and love the design. It's nearing 3 years old and is getting a little slow as my images and such get bigger (but to be expected with a 3 year old machine).

But, the G5 iMac is the FUGLIEST (fu* ing Ugly) THING ever. God, it's absolutely HIDEOUS. Apple really botched the design of it big time!

I keep eyeing it up as the specs are quite good in 20" form. But, the wife keeps reminding me how UGLY it is.

So, hopefully Rev3 will bring a great looking machine again! :)

I agree and in my opinion the latest incarnation of the iMac is ugly. I went to a local Apple Store and each time tried to convince myself that I needed this machine.

I previously had the iLamp version and liked it, but my daughter claimed it as her own. So for now, I bought a Mac Mini, until such time as Apple puts out a G5 consumer level model that I like.

I thought it was ugly too the first time I saw it on the net.

Since my daughter got it I love it!!!!

I have to disagree with those "ugly" posts. It's one f* ing beautiful machine!

I have two of those 17" @ home and 20" @ work...

I'd guess next machine will be new PowerBook or new tabletop machine. The previous incarnation of iMac was a little brief to be honest, I'd thought than that design would last loger, but seems that you never know ;^D

Remember Sanders that when ever you will buy you computer soon enough there will be new "better" right around the corner.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I recall that you have been using PC's so far??

I'm waiting too:

I would like to see in the new iMac:
-More standard RAM memory.
-More memory slots.
-Better graphic card. (for my kids)
-Firewire 800.

-I would like to see Tiger OS screaming in 64bit.
-Spotlight (new way of working with information).
-improved iPhoto 6.0.

I can't wait to work with a computer like this.

Hi Paul,

I had no idea about this, it puts things in perspective allright, the processor upgrade was the main thing I would be waiting for after I have enough money (another 1,5 month or so).

You are probably right about the RAM upgrade, I hadnt mentioned it because to me it would be uninteresting because I'd replace it with 2 1Gb sticks as soon as it arrived. What would be cool is another bank, so 3 banks with 1 preloaded with said 512Mb. 2,5 Gb would be really nice (512 for OS X and 2Gb for Photoshop).

Can hardly wait :)

Too bad, just like yours my 'serious' predication is a lot less inticing. The firewire 800 was on my 'unlikely list' too...

We'll see, this summer I hope :)

I'd rather not have the large white space under the monitor proper, but even so it's an attractive package, and I prefer it to the lamps.

I had the same thing at first, but I'm warming up to it now. I bet you mean the deep broad bar underneath the screen, which looks totally out of place in comparison to the other edges?

A MacMini + 20" cinema display is sure prettier, but less powerfull, too bad.

I think I'll be warming even further still to the current model, and hope it will be upgraded internally before I have enough money :)

Yep, still using XP on a PC. Nothing wrong with it but it's quite old by now, and processing photos and stuff like that gets tedious when the computer is no way as fast as me.

So when I saw the new iMac's I decided to try Mac for a change (better sooner than later) to see if it is any good. I must say, so far it's looking good (reading hundreds of software reviews every week) but of course I have yet to try any of it...

As for me waiting, if I had the cash now, I'd buy it immediately (and a 200-400 VR to go with it ;-) but as it is I don't have the money yet so I might as well wait a little longer until the revision comes out. And I'm hoping the revision is exactly the same model only with enhanced inner parts.

I didn't wait... Well actually I did wait. I placed my order with the Apple Store Online on 2/11 and my machine (20" 250GB 256MB BT) wasn't shipped until last Friday 3/4. I was quoted 1-3 days expected shipping when I placed the order, but each time the magic date came up, it was delayed either 4 or 5 business days. It's on a FedEx truck now and should be here on Wednesday.

Just a data point as to Apple's current backlog.

I thought so too. The iLamp wasn't fully captured on the 'net pictures. In person it is beautiful.

I've seen the iMac G5 and each time I think - God, that's one ugly machine. I think it's the white underneath.

The iLamp is the perfect machine. The moveable screen has come in handy more times than I ever imageined and is great for swiveling to show the wife, adjusting to a different position, etc.

If Apple would go back to that design and put a G5 in there, I'd be all over it in a second!

I am a "switcher" and bought a 17" PB in November. Just missed the update by about 60 days. I am in the marker now for a 2nd and will buy the 20" iMac AFTER Rev B is released, be it 30 days or 6 months. I am just waiting for the announcement and it is One-Click at the Apple strore for me.

I would like to see a better video card, 512 RAM, maybe a 2.0 G5 and FW 800. Also I would love to see a 23" model! Fat chance of that happening I guess. I personally like the style and I understand to get rid of the big white area on the bottom, they would have to have a "brick" for the power supply. I would prefer the wide white area to another brick to plug in.

No good or even any rumors on the update except that it is approaching it's average update cycle date in 4 days.

Maybe they will just fix the defective noisy CPU fan.

As far as special software for the iMac; forget it. All it needs to be is for OSX and do what you want it to do.

I am through with waiting for the "next upgrade" because there will always be a next upgrade and I have better things to do than wait for what MIGHT be an improvement. think of what you could be doing RIGHT NOW if you don't wait. Let the bleeding edge techno-geeks wait there life away!

Hoi Jan :)

your extra memory slot is a very good suggestion.

However I'm wondering what the firewire 800 would be for, an external HD I assume, would it benefit from the 400 to 800 step? (just asking i have no clue)
-improved iPhoto 6.0.
which features would you like to see improved?

Thanks for your thoughts and the explanation about the wide white bar underneath the monitor, I was wondering what it was for.

Personally I would rather have it in the back, out of sight, but the current choice is ok with me too as it allows for more space on my desk :)
