Why upgrade from a Coolpix 800 or 950 to a Nikon D1 or D1x?
Why upgrade from a 1-megapixel digital camera to a 3-megapixel camera?
The same answer applies to all these examples: Because digital
cameras and personal computer operating systems are both improving
at an amazing rate. Anyone who says otherwise hasn't examined the
latest digital cameras or newest version of Windows (Windows XP).
Yes, digital cameras and operating systems are two entirely
different types of products, but the same principle applies: The
new version is almost always a big improvement over the old,
because technology is improving so fast for certain types of
products.
I'm dismayed reading through this thread. I've read hundreds of
posts over the past year on dpreview.com from digital photography
fanatics eager to learn every detail about the latest digicams from
Nikon, Canon, Sony, and other manufacturers. Many of you even
pre-order cameras before they are available or have been fully
reviewed.
That's why I was so surprised to see how many readers on this forum
say they won't upgrade to the latest version of Windows. Many of
you even sound proud to tell everyone you won't upgrade, as if to
say "I'm smart enough to know that Windows XP is not worth
upgrading to."
Where's that desire for the latest and greatest techno-product that
every fan of technology has burning inside them? I wanted the
latest version of both Windows and Mac as soon as I heard about
them. I could hardly wait to get my hands on the first beta version
of Windows XP, and same with the new Mac OS X.
You have every right to limp along with Win 98, Linux, or some
outdated version of the Mac OS, but don't kid yourself into
thinking you're not really missing anything. While you're debating
whether the $90 (or whatever) upgrade cost of Windows XP is worth
it, millions of computer users will happily be enjoying the
benefits of a vastly improved operating system. And we won't care
whether it comes from Microsoft, Apple, or some other company,
because the company doesn't matter, it's the quality of the
software that counts.
