I know this is an old topic, but I cannot find my notes. I have to ask again.

How to convert the focal length of 990 to a 35 mm camera equivalent? The focal length for my picturse were 8.2 mm, what is the 35 mm equivalent? My panaroma software needs this number, I guessed a wrong one and got a fuzzy output. I think there is a formula for this purpose, could you tell me? Thanks.

The wide angle on a 990 or 995 is a real 8.2mm and is supposed to equate to a 38mm lens on a 35mm camera. Meaning that the multiplier is 4.634. But the lens is marked as an 8-32mm lens meaning the marked multiplier would be 4.75.

Now does that 38mm lens refer to the width angle of the long dimension? How about the diagonal view angle? It's kinda hard to compare a 2:3 aspect image to a 3:4 aspect image, so maybe we should think of the multiplier as 4.7 for rough purposes.

Peter,

Thanks for the info. In fact, I guessed 40 mm (8.2 mm for 990) for the 35mm equivalence and allowed 15 mm range for the software. It seemed that I was pretty close. However, I got a fuzzy panaroma. It's too late now. I will try 38 mm and allow 3 mm range tomorrow.
