Ahoy there!

I am looking to buy a new dSLR type camera. After much research, I have come up with the following shortlist (in no specific order):

Panasonic Lumix DMC-F23B
Canon Powershot S1 IS
Olympus C-765
Konica Minolta Dimage Z20
Fuji S3100/S3500, S5100/S5500, S7000
Praktica Luxmedia 4008, Megxon C480 (same camera - different name)

I am looking for as much 'bang for my buck' as I can get within my budget of £300.00. I want crisp, clear results without busting the bank.

I would welcome anyone's opinion on any of the above (including their reasons) to respond. I have read many, many reviews, and am now stuck on choice. If you have any other suggestions, that would be welcome too.

Many thanks.

Well M8 i owned a Oly 765 for 2 weeks and took a gamble and moved to the FZ3 - haven't looked back since. The Image stabilisation coupled with the incredible lens make it the only option for me sub £300.

It's now only £199 in the UK but be quick before they all go.

Here is my view of the FZ3 v the Oly 765

Pros :-

Better Lens
Better Battery life
AF Assist Lamp
Image Stabilisation
F2.8 even at full zoom
12x zoom not 10x
35mm wide angle not 38mm
Faster focusing (especially in low light)
Great Lens Hood included

Cons

Less Megapixels,
A little bulkier

Mike.

It's your choice pal... Unless some one has ALL the cameras you listed how do you expect a decent opinion? Most have one, so what you'll get is biased opinions...

There are many good reviews (on this and other sites) - read them and then do searches on the relevant forums on the weak points identified by the reviews - will they effect your use, important enough to discount that camera?

And if you do come back asking about opinion on a specific camera, remember to be specific yourself about what & how you will be using the camera.

For £300 I'd get an FZ20, but that's biased...

I got an FZ3 having been a lifelong Oly fan, and haven't regretted it. From your list in my view the nearest rival would be the Oly C765. In good light the images from the Oly might have the edge, but for all-round versatility you won't beat the FZ3 for the price.

OM-1, OM-4, MjuII, Nikon F65, 8080WZ, Panasonic FZ3, Pentax S4

Ahoy Mikey!

Thanks to you and the others for your input thus far. All points noted. Where is the £199.00 site?

Having consulted the 'Oracle' . . I have conceded that the Z20 is on the top of the list. Mind you, there are 2 new additions to the range; the FZ4 & FZ5.

Anyone who knows where I can get the black version for the fewest £££'s, please advise.

If you're happy buying from EBay then that's where I'd go... From £266 + shipping. And for £300 you can get a bundle with 512MB SD and an extra battery...

The only DSLR I know of that may come close to $300 is maybe a used Canon 300d on Ebay....the Rebel is great with a 50mm f1.8 lens....for point and shoot type cameras I love my FZ20 with the Oly 1.7 Teleconverter...it is a great combo for birding....for in-door shots my P&S Canon Pro1 with 420EX fits the bill perfect....however from your list of P&S cameras for your budget, I'd go with the Canon S1 IS...had one, it is just a great all around camera, just a little bit low on the megapixels....but nice indeed...

sorry, forgot your budget is 300 pounds....not dollars...

But this is from pricegrabber.com. I just don't know if it's U.S.A. specific or not.
