D2H or D2Hs for nature and landscape photography; comments? NEED SOME HELP, PLEASE!

You've got mail, if you can take a 5mb attachment. Let me know

Neil
Go ahead and ship the NEFs to my email at
kahuna*nospam*ameritech.net. I'll trial the NikonCapture software.
Kinda tired of PhotoChop. Remove the nospam from my email for it
to work.

Thanks!
Kev
You can also download a trial of Nikon Capture and play with it for
30 days.

Regards,
Neil
Thanks, Neil. Don't drop test it...

I appreciate the offer of some NEF files, but I've no way to
process them. I don't think I can do them in Photochop CS...

Cheers

No problems with attachment size. Seems like every Viagra ad that pops into my email is that big...

at least mine did just drag the nef file into photoshop and acr should open up. Note: I use photoshop only for post processing but D2h Nefs when first open seem to always be a little on the soft side.

You should have received that email by now. If not I did something wrong. I assumed an @ between kahuna and ameritech.net.

I just got the D2h and used it the past weekend in Death Valley. As all have reported camera use is awesome.
Here is my album of D2H pictures.
http://www.pbase.com/mzelmar/death_valley

As part of my post processing I have a PS action for the product called Noiseware. Since its just a click of the mouse in the Actions pallet, I've used it on all of the images with dark areas. I haven't checked whether its necessary or not.

I've printed this image at 13x19 and it looks perfect, footprints, ripples and all.

I'm extremely happy with the D2h.
Hope this helps.

1. I'm not into megapixel envy. Will my photos be razor-sharp at up
to-say- 11X14 and pretty doggone good at 20 X 30?
I have a full frame 11x14 from my D2H sitting next to me at my desk at work. I have had it since Friday (only got the camera a few weeks ago) and I will still stop and simply stair at it and the quaility in the image. The image is no where near that of LF, but I believe it is on par with my Haselbald and is supperior then any 35mm C-41.

I also have a 16x20 of another image and when you get within a foot of it, you can see the fine detail is starting to go, but heck, I have a 20x20 from my Hasselbald (Portra 160) and I can see grain in that image.

Personally, considering my 'blad needs a major tuneup, it will be shelved for a while and all my portraits will be done with the D2H. I firmly believe that the 4.1MPixel image will go to 40inx50in when mounted on canvas, over someone's fireplace quite nicely, and be on par with my 'blad as far as quality.
4. How is the camera built? Solid? Awkward? Menus and displays
logical?
Prior to the D2H, I was shooting with the F5. They are equal in build quality, you have nothing to fear.
5. Veiwfinder performance? Clear? Accurate framing?
I like it, no complaints.
7. Overall non-sports resolution and quality?
Personally I think it is great, far greater then I expected! I was only expecting to be able to go 11x14 or 16x20, but considering how my images will be used, I can go a lot larger!
8. If you have it and like it, please tell me why. If you despise
it, again, why?
The reasons I already listed. I do shoot sports and the 8.5 fps simply ROCKS. The AF is amazing. The ONLY thing I miss is the removable prism. There was a shot last night at a basketball game would would have really rocked if I could have taken off the prism and put the camera on the floor, but it looks like those days are gone with the F6 and D series:( Other then that, I LOVE the camera!

Thanks, Mike. I realy enjoyed your images of Death Valley. Nicely done.

Cheers!

Upsampling can be done within Capture, Photoshop or using a 3rd-party application. I use Genuine Fractals most often, but Photoshop's Bicubic Smoother algorithm is quite good in many situations. I put some samples of upsampled images using GenFrac and Photoshop at the end of the processing section of the eBook, if you have one.

I may have a chance to take a look at the D2Hs at some point, but I don't get review cameras from Nikon (I don't do that sort of thing as a rule -- I buy my gear like the rest of us do). It's likely that there will be reviews out before I can check one myself.

Smart move avoiding those 70-foot falls :^)

Ron
Thanks, Ron. When will you review the D2Hs?

BTW, I'm careful to keep gravity-induced accidents to less than 4
feet as a rule... ; )

When you say upscale, is this a software function or program you're
using?

Thanks!

I opened it up using Adobe PS Elements just to see if I could.

That is an absolutely beautiful picture. If you haven't posted it, you should. Nice work!

Kev

Thank you very much, Kevin. For those breathlessly following along, he is referring to this image. What you see here is a 100% crop. I was working at 420mm, but it wasn't enough to get a full frame. This is about 1/2 of the frame height. I am interested in seeing how this enalrges; it will be a good test of the cropping ability of the D2H images.

Neil, I'd have to say that Chinq_18649 is one of the best I've ever

Thanks to everyone here and elsewhere on the forum, I sold my F5 to a friend and put some bucks together and am going to Cord Camera tomorrow to get a D2H. So what if it's 1999.99. Nikon has officially stopped selling them, and with the D2Hs MSRP of 3999.99, I don't need a D2X with a 4.1 mpxl LBCAST sensor, the D2H will do just fine.

Thanks to everyone. Neil, keep in touch, I'd like to see more of your work.

Kev

Good luck, Kevin. Same price I paid at B&H. If you have a good local dealer it's certainly worth patronizing them.

Nell

if the friends D2H I been using is any indication D2HS should be solid performer. I too am waiting for D2HS as I really dont get off on measuring pixels. Although D2x looks wonderful for diffrence in price I'm hoping to get me a good lens! :-)

D2x is overkill for types of pictures I do! I will I'm sure get one eventually when prices do come down a bit....
BTW, the reason I don't want the D2X is because it costs too
  1. $!!& ^ much.

Yeah, Neil, the guy was really nice compared to most people you meet in camera stores, and he works on commission, so you know, seemed like the right thing to do.

Mike:

I'm looking at a D2H as well, and came across those great shots of Death Valley. Going there next weekend- any suggestions, comments, lessons learned...?

Rickster,

You'll have a great time. The valley is very different from usual, since there's wild flowers everywhere. Badwater may be dry again when you get there but it was mostly muddy when we were there. My reflections shots were taken from areas that are usually dry.

The Mesquite Dunes are great to photograph at sunrise or sunset but be prepared to clone out the other photographers. I had to remove at least 2 from each shot in my album. At one time I was able to count 30 individual photographers sprinkled around on various dunes plus a group of 15 (maybe a workshop) on one dune. Also, some photographers seem to think that its their right to stand at the absolute pinnacle of a dune for 15 or 20 minutes, which, of course, affects everyone else's shot.

Br prepared to hike. When you spot something you want to shot, you park your vehicle on the side of the road and hike to your spot. Everything looks close until you start hiking to it.

Finally, carry plenty of water. The air is very dry there and 2 of us drank a dozen bottles in 2 days.
I'm sure you'll have a memorable, and very enjoyable experience .
