Newest (happy !) member of the 70-200VR club....

Hi LuckyJacques:

the more you try to resist, the more they will pull you in.....I know this from experience ! We are doomed to buy this incredible Nikkor pro glass ! my wallet is crying, but my photography has never had such a great lift !! Enjoy your 17-55 ! .....and yes, DON'T TRY a 70-200VR....don't even pick one up ! You will be lost !! LOL !
Show us some photos of Greece,

Best,
Jd3
Because of Todd's great review of the 17-55, I ordered it last
week, Think it will come in quite handy here in Greece. I was all
set to order the 80-400VR, figuring I would have a nice tele range
to cover everything from landscape to wildlife and then come to
this thread to see everyone drooling all over themselves about the
70-200. Damn!! Must... not... look... Must... not... be...
tempted..

Jd3,

Congratulations on your new lens. You will love it. I've had mine for about two weeks. The VR is unbelievable. Now I'm trying to decide between a TC or getting another lens with more reach, maybe the Bigma. Can't afford any more Nikon glass in that range right now. I've read lots of pro's and con's concerning the TC's so I'm not really sure what I'm going to do yet. I want the extra reach for surfing and wildlife/nature. Any suggestions? Enjoy your new baby.
Jerry

good for you ! You have great taste in glass !! LOL!

I also have the Sigma 70-300 APO II, which is both surprisingly good (in good light), and has a LOT of reach at the long end...at first I thought I'd sell it (due to the overlap with the VR), but I think I'll keep it....it's apples and oranges....the sigma is small, light and easy to carry around....and on a sunny day at the beach it has REACH ! But for indoor or low light stuff at telephoto, VR can't be beat !

I'm also reading some good things about TC's for the VR...but, everyone says there is a sharpness penalty (not good).....I'd love to see if anybody has done some low light work, and if there is a penalty using a TC with VR....hmm...may have to post a thread on that...interesting question !

Anyway, enjoy your VR ! And post some pictures....what a heck of a great club it is !

Cheers,
Jd3

Yeh, seems like I've heard too many comments about TC's and softness at the long end, which is why we would buy them in the first place. I've heard a couple of good posts and seen some samples that didn't look bad, but you have to wonder, can that many people be wrong? I absolutely love my 70-200VR and won't part with it but I do want a minimum of twice the range and maybe a little more. I can't afford anything in Nikkor that will do that right now so I thought about the 2X and possibly the 3X until I started reading. Now I don't think a TC will solve my problem and the Bigma is about the only thing that will reach out there that I can afford. Maybe the 80-400 OS, but I just haven't been able to find out that much about that one. Anyway, have a great upcoming weekend with your new 70-200VR and will expect to see some photos soon. Also hope you get your computer problems solved. I had to buy a new one not long ago too. Have a good one.

My boys are 4 and 2 also. They're currently in the "Nooooo! No more photos!" stage.

Love the D2H, 70-200 combo!!

I've been borrowing my Dad's 70-200 for a while, and love this lens so much that I had to get one for myself (besides, he was grumbling...). Ordered it yesterday for delivery on Friday, and went for the TC-E1.7 on top of it. Saw some pictures on this and the D70 forum that convinced me to add the TC, but I'll let you know what I think in a few weeks.

Now, thanks to David, I have to start saving for the 17-55...

Hey Diane, congrats on the lens, it's a great tool, as you well know.

17-55 + 70-200 = nice kit :)

Todd:

Woah -- my apologies for quasi-cyber-stalkage: I know your model. Did you go to school with us? I was class of '03. Say hi to Zoe for me. I expect to run into people I know all the time, living in Brooklyn, but not online and not at dpreview. Cheers.

Jacques,

Congrats on the new lens! Do post some images of Greece, I would
love to see them. Are you on the coast?

I am preparing to post a revision of the review I did on the
70-200VR a month and a half ago (please, don't bother looking for
it). When the revised version hits the forums, please ignore it. I
don't think it would do you any good.

The expanded review will include all new images as well as a much
expanded writeup on each of the various sections, and new sections
as well.

Todd

Todd;

You are indeed an EVIL man!! I will NOT read your new review of the 70-200VR when you post it... yeah right ;-) My friend, those two pics you posted are spectacular! I just don't know what to say. The 70-200VR is now officially on my list. DAMN!!!

I live in Athens right now (Filothei area), not on the coast. But the coast is REALLY close. Depending on traffic, it takes between 20 minutes and 40 minutes to get to the water (Glyfada area). Nothing is really that far away though. As soon as I get the 17-55DX (sometime this week I expect) I will shoot and post some images.

Best;

That is a little creepy.

No, I didn't go to school with you, but I've known Zoe since junior high school. She was my first model and I photograph her whenever she's in town. It's always a lot of fun.

Sorry to show you what VR can do, Jacques. I apologize for any effect it might have on your finances in the future. But VR really is magic.

Perhaps the 70-200 is like absolute power: as they say, it corrupts absolutely...

That image is not my favorite from the set, but I thought I'd post a new image of the model, and it shows the sharpness well.

Between the 17-55 and the 70-200, there shouldn't be much more on your list. It's a great two-lens kit.

Here, I just posted another shot with the 70-200: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=12471984

I've never been to Greece, but it sounds fantastic. I look forward to the images you'll make, truly. I look forward to returning to Europe as well.

Cool. I hear through the grapevine that she even lives in my neighborhood. I played with her in the wind ensemble and our circles of friends brushed each other once in a while. She's good friends with an ex of mine, with whom I am still close. Crazy.

Enough cyber-stalkage, though. This has burst my nice little bubble of anonymity! :) One of my colleagues posts on here, too, but he's a Canon guy, the punk!

Nice shots, btw, and I only wish I could get my hands on the 17-55 or the 70-200 VR.

Best regards,

While I've had the 70-200VR for about 11 months I share your enthusiasm. Congratulations to you and all that own this lens. Here's one of my pictures (a Calilily) that I think helps demonstrate the DOF/Bokeh capabilities.

D70, 200mm, 1/2000, f/2.8, ISO 200, cropped, (9:55am) I was about 5 feet from the Calilily)

Cheers,
Don

OK, there is a lot of blame to go around here....the posts kept
coming.....the 70-200vr poll (no negative comments except: "it's a
little heavy")...the Yves squirrels....it was killing me....

So, I went down Friday night and picked it up....I've only taken a
couple of dozen pics this week, but I'm blown away ! I'm taking
indoor candids at 200mm at 1/10 of a second, 1/8 of a second with
no blur ! It's insane ! Wide open at 2.8, tack sharp.....my
desktop computer died this weekend, but when I get it back up and
running I'll post some shots....

I know it's NOT the equipment that makes the photographer....but,
I used to believe that a lot more BEFORE this weekend ! LOL !
70-200vr users rejoice ! What a thing of beauty !

Sorry, just had to share....WOW !

I think you are both a gifted photographer, as well as somebody who understands why people crave the 'hard' info along with 'creative' stuff to get them inspired....I like your style. Your photos speak for themselves ! I'm hoping to post some of my own that begin to approach your creativity and great personal style....

jd3, I am of course enjoying my VR. However, I use it with a D70 and wish the camera could match the VR's speed. I'm thinking about getting a second body. Can't afford the D1H or D2H. But I have seen the first version D1 for around 500-600 used. Does anybody that combo would work? Would appreciate any input.
