Is the SmartMedia card the same, no matter the brand? I am getting ready to buy the C2100 and am shopping for things I need for it. http://www.Aaxes.com has a FABULOUS sale on right now on SmartMedia cards, with the best prices I've seen yet. I looked on a compatibility page and didn't see "C2100" listed. Why not? Thanks ahead of time for taking the time to answer me!

The C-2100 is discontinued, so that might account for it being dropped, but otherwise it's probably just that they have only so much room for the list of cameras.

The C-2100 works with any Smart Media card that meets industry standards. On lesser known brands you might want to verify that they can be exchanged if they are DOA. The top brands such as Sandisk have excellent quality control.

I suspect that you noticed that Olympus has tied the panorama feature of the camera to having a genuine Olympus Smart Media chip inserted. Many people reserve the inadequate 8MB chip that came with the camera for that function.

Fritz, have you heard of the Aaxes brand? I don't mind spending the extra money if there is a difference. I just thought a SmartMedia card was a SmartMedia card, period. Thanks for the tip on exchanging the DOA cards. Hadn't thought of that!

Fritz,

Where are you getting the information that the 2100 is discontinued, do you have anything official? I've seen this several times on this forum, but never with any source, and the only source I seem to be able to find it "The guy at computerworld said that they weren't stocking it any more because it's discontinued." While it doesn't matter that much to me, it doesn't make much sense, and I'm just curious if it's another one of those myths.

On the topic of the post, I've used cards from newegg and aaxes without problems, and even added the panorama header, which works fine.

Well, you're right: the doctor hasn't signed the death certificate, and I'm only a layman, but this stiff sure looks stone cold dead to me! Consider:
  • Dealers don't have any in stock and have none coming in.
  • Online stores can't supply them.
  • A bunch were auctioned off by Egghead.com
  • Olympus is selling a new camera with the same lens.
In my opinion, the formal announcement is simply a formality anymore. They are just making it possible for the pipeline to empty out before they announce it.

Get the cheapest -- you can get good deals on 128MB and the new 256MB cards (wish there was w "microdrive"equivalent"especially with 4 and higher Mega pixel cameras in TIF / RAW mode appearing now.

The panaroma feature is a bit of a gimmick as you can do this with decent software anyway. Just keep the camera reasonably level, take your shots and let the software do "seamless stiching". Saves wasting mony on OLY cards.

BTW ensure your camera can handle larger Smart media sizes. If not you might be able to get a firmware update.

I'll second that. In Germany, a few online camerashops have now the sign "no longer available" next to the 2100's pic.

I wasn't aware they had another 10x stabilized lens model...that would sure be good reason to figure it was being discontinued. I know of the C700, but it's not the same lens, what are the specs for the new one?

The other reasons could be explained...I bought one online recently, and they are selling like hotcakes, so that coulld be one reason...and Egghead gets things in the auction that aren't discontinued quite often, by various means...out of business sales, etc., and their auctions frequently net them more than the retailers are getting.

The question was more to satisfy my curiosity than anything else, as I have mine and love it, but I just wondered if this was theory or official, sounds like it's still at the theory level, though if there's a replacement it's very likely to be the case.

If you shop around, you can find Olympus brand smartmedia for competitive prices. For example, I found the 128 Mb Olympus smartmedia for only $140 at CDW ( http://www.cdw.com ). However, you can find the Olympus 64 Mb smartmedia cheaper in other places. Like I said, you've gotta shop around using a service like PriceGrabber ( http://www.pricegraber.com ).

Hello Gary,

How did you get the panorama feature working? Do you have to have a reader with the smprep to make it work? I've got a reader built into my Epson 875DC, but don't know what controller they use. Anyone know of a work around? I do have a 8,16, & 128 meg oly card, but plan on getting a few from Newegg and would like them to have the feature also.

Sorry for the slow reply, I lost track of this thread. I used my Zio reader and the smprep.exe program that comes with it, along with the procedure at http://www.geocities.com/roberthaus/pan/

I don't know that you could do it with the reader in the 875, unless you can find a version of smprep.exe that works with it. A Zio can be found for around $25 or less, so it's possible to save enough over the cost of an Oly card to pay for it in one use.

Even though I have other programs for panoramas, the Camedia one with the Oly pan feature is by far the easiest, and usually does a great job, so I hated to part with it, but did not want to pay $80 for an Olympus card instead of the current $34 at newegg.com. I've done a number of these cards for myself and a relative, and all have worked fine.
