OK, there is a lot of blame to go around here....the posts kept coming.....the 70-200vr poll (no negative comments except: "it's a little heavy")...the Yves squirrels....it was killing me....

So, I went down Friday night and picked it up....I've only taken a couple of dozen pics this week, but I'm blown away ! I'm taking indoor candids at 200mm at 1/10 of a second, 1/8 of a second with no blur ! It's insane ! Wide open at 2.8, tack sharp.....my desktop computer died this weekend, but when I get it back up and running I'll post some shots....

I know it's NOT the equipment that makes the photographer....but, I used to believe that a lot more BEFORE this weekend ! LOL ! 70-200vr users rejoice ! What a thing of beauty !

Sorry, just had to share....WOW !

Jd3, I joined yesterday too. What an incredible lens! It probably won't come off my D70 very much.

Come on Todd....you should hang your head in shame ! LOL ! I told my wife that I was also interested in the 17-55 (after your review)...and she almost hit me !!

Seriously, I can't tell you how over the moon I am with this thing...I do a lot of indoor available light stuff, and the vr is like a dream ! Yeah, it's a financial hit, but I'm quite sure I'll forget the price in no time, and the photos I'll make with this will be well worth it !

Looking forward to more great pix and reviews from you ! And I'll posting some of these soon (if I can ever get XP to restore on my machine !).
thanks,

Jd3
Sorry about your wallet.

Haha, I hope I haven't caused any marital bumps for anyone out there with that review!

But the 17-55 and 70-200VR are a great combo. A lot of folks have picked up those two lenses as the core of their kit. It covers everything but macro for me and my shooting.

VR is pretty sensational -- I abuse it all the time. I've already made countless images in the past two months that I wouldn't have made otherwise thanks to that technology.

thanks,
Goodluck with the computer. I just scared myself into buying a 300gb Maxtor external drive for one-touch backups after thinking about loosing the 100gb of images I have lying around. The images are copying as I type, so now I'll be able to sleep easier now.

As for reviews, I'm in the process of updating the 70-200VR review I wrote. The words are written, I just have to get around to picking out the new images... Which will probably take another month at the rate I'm going.

Again, congrats. The 70-200 is the only thing keeping me from using epoxy to cement the 17-55 to the lens mount.

Todd

Simply put, it is the best zoom I have ever used. The price paid will fade more and more with each image viewed and/or printed. The VR will make you do stupid stuff like taking full zoom images at 1/15th just because you can. :)

Congrats on your purchase -- you're gonna love it.

Just start talking about the 17-55dx non-stop, over every waking moment. Bring it up in conversations. During dinner, at lunch, over coffee. Talk about it to yourself when you know she can hear you. If she is like my wife, after a few days of it she will probably get so tired of hearing about it she will tell you to just get it...... "thinking to herself that she hopes it shuts you up about it" :)

My harddrive died last Thursday, and I just replaced it with a Maxtor 250gig internal drive. I've ordered an iomega 250 gig external back up drive. Only difference between it and the one you ordered Todd, was you don't have to push a button, it automatically backs up the data. I should get it this week direct from iomega, so I'll let you know how it works.

Luckily for me, I had enough warning that my drive was dying to back all my images up to dvd's. Took forever, but taught me a lesson to get a backup device. :)

You are so right....I talked this up all the time, I agonized....I think she finally agreed to 'shut me up': Ok, today I start on the 17-55 ! LOL !

Phil,

You are SO RIGHT ! the first thing I did when I unwrapped it was to take a photo of my clock on the wall at full zoom with the VR on at 1/8 of a second hand held.....tack sharp ! ....I was able to review a couple and I'm just blown away by the sharpness and contrast, even wide open....and the bokeh !.....don't get me started here Phil !! LOL ! I'll post some photos soon,

I've got a 4 year old and a 2 year old....we went to a 'kid party' over the weekend, and I was snapping off great closeups from 15-20 feet away in crappy light with the VR on....I am gonna love this lens for my 'kid' work !

thanks for stopping by,

allows you to stay out of their face.
I second all the quality statements.

jd3, no that wasn't me. I haven't posted on nikonians yet. How do I post pics? I took some basketball shots Saturday night that were my best ever. I'm really excited about this lens.

Well Mike,

there's a third guy who ALSO bought a VR on Friday night then ! LOL ! in order to post pictures, you need to get them hosted somewhere....I use Pbase (like a lot of others here), and SMUGMUG is another popular hosting site....they are both good and not expensive -- or if you have broadband, your isp probably has space to host pictures...

So, I'm looking forward to seeing some great VR pics posted soon ! Just like you, I'm incredibly psyched ! What a lens !!

My harddrive died last Thursday, and I just replaced it with a
Maxtor 250gig internal drive. I've ordered an iomega 250 gig
external back up drive. Only difference between it and the one you
ordered Todd, was you don't have to push a button, it automatically
backs up the data. I should get it this week direct from iomega,
so I'll let you know how it works.
Great, please do.

I think I'll have to setup a script to use the one-touch backup button, but I may just write a script for automated backups as well.

I have the 80gb drive that shipped with my g4, as well as a 250gb maxtor as the secondary drive, which works very well -- that is to say, without incident. :)
Luckily for me, I had enough warning that my drive was dying to
back all my images up to dvd's. Took forever, but taught me a
lesson to get a backup device. :)
Good thing! Was it making clicking noises? Yikes.

No clicking noises, I just started having crashes and very slow performance. Then I started having boot problems. Win2k machine. The replacement drive is one of the newer Serial ATA drives, and it runs circles around the old one. I didn't realize how bad my old one had gotten, but it must have been dying for a while. :)

Because of Todd's great review of the 17-55, I ordered it last week, Think it will come in quite handy here in Greece. I was all set to order the 80-400VR, figuring I would have a nice tele range to cover everything from landscape to wildlife and then come to this thread to see everyone drooling all over themselves about the 70-200. Damn!! Must... not... look... Must... not... be... tempted..

Jacques,

Congrats on the new lens! Do post some images of Greece, I would love to see them. Are you on the coast?

I am preparing to post a revision of the review I did on the 70-200VR a month and a half ago (please, don't bother looking for it). When the revised version hits the forums, please ignore it. I don't think it would do you any good.

The expanded review will include all new images as well as a much expanded writeup on each of the various sections, and new sections as well.

Todd

I leave you with this image and a crop, because I am a cruel, cruel man:
