Need advice on 10D

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the offer. I already put a bid in on an e-bay for a 6 months old 10D that is in mint condition (with 6 months of US warranty remaining). The auction expires on Sunday afternoon so until then I have to wait. I bet a max of 760 USD which is the most I would pay and would be similar to what you paid. I think it is a bargain considering that 12 months ago I was looking at the same camera and thinking whether to buy it for 2300CAD.

By the way, when you say you paid 1000 dollars, is this including tax?

Thanks,

Alex
Also, there are lots of used 10Ds available, and some in the
Toronto area, over at http://www.fredmiranda.com . Go to the forums area,
and hit the "buy and sell" threads.

There are quite a few Toronto people over there too.

Vistek also runs into the occasional used 10D.

The only downside of importing from overseas, or outside of Canada,
is that you'll be on the hook for 15% GST/PST, and shipping.
As far as focus speed goes, I find that that my main problem is
usually the lens (Sigma 70-300 APO II) which takes amazing photos
but made me miss some of the “one in a lifetime” photo
opportunities. 300D AF works wonderfully with 28-135 IS and I
never had any issues. I presume that 10D AF would be at least as
good. My main reason for wanting to get rid of the 300D is the
fact that when taking airplane photos, AI Servo never kicked in – I
always have to depress the shutter to refocus which is annoying.

Following link is to my photos on the airliners.net – all taken
with 300D and Sigma 70-300 APO II in case you care to see them:

If anyone has 10D and 580EX flash, could you please let me know if
the flash performance is reasonably good. How much better would be
ETTL-II?
Hi All,

I am in a big dilemma as to what to do with respect to cameras.
I currently have 300D and I have decided to sell it and upgrade to
either 10D (nearly new @ 800USD) or 350D. I already have a buyer
for my 300D lined up.

I use the camera mainly for taking airliners and air show photos
(hence the need to upgrade as I need the ability to use servo mode
and exposure comp together).

Anyhow, here is my issue:
I really like the feel of 10D. As I may end up doing some wedding
candid and portrait photography, showing up with a small Rebel does
not look as professional. In favour of 10D from my point of view
are:
  • Shorter blackout when taking photos – does anyone know of this
would make a difference when tracking airplanes?
  • The look and feel of the camera.
  • At 800 USD, it is a bargain.
  • Wheel in the back is handy for manual control.
In favour of 350D:
  • Better resolution – not as important as the difference is fairly
small.
  • Lower noise – is it really that much of a difference or are
people just being picky?
  • ETTL-II – this is a big one as I got 580EX.
  • Speed – again, something I can live without and 10D is not
exactly slow.

As I have changed my mind numerous times already, any
comments/thoughts/suggestions that could help me with my decision
would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Alex

Alex,

I don't disagree -- it's a heck of a deal. If you consider that the 350D is at $1,150 for the body only, if you can pick it up for US$760 which is about $1,000, you're getting the build quality.

I think the biggest thing that the 10D has going for it is that it was an expensive camera. That money is spent, without question, on things that you don't necessarily see. Or, phrased another way, the 350D is built to a price.

Since you're a plane fanatic, really, do you think that Boeing could/would put the same technology into a plane that had to be built and sold at half the price?

Another analogy is the car marketplace. While cars may share many components, a Lexus is still better built that a Toyota, an Acura better than a Honda, because the difference in price isn't simply in the margin and marketing.

Thanks all for your comments. Here is the final decision: 20D.

After loosing a bid on an e-bay for 10D, and playing with 20D at the local store, I realized that 20D is what I really want and that if I got the 10D, I'd be spending 500US extra on a wide lens (I use d-r kit one at the moment for 1% of my photos) and I would be spending another 1000 dollars to upgrade again in a year. There is a saying "I'm not wealthy enough to buy cheap things". As for the new d-rebel, I figure that I would not be happy with the camera feel regardless of the functionality - the same reason why I went with the Acura TSX over the Accord.

Once again, thanks for all your advice.

Best,
Alex
