As many of you know, Adobe has had about an 18-month upgrade cycle for Photoshop since at least 5.5. It has a tendency to announce upgrades at PhotoshopWorld (eary fall) or PhotoshopWorld West (late winter). With the latter coming next week, I checked news story a few minutes ago and found the following from Dow Jones:

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said he remains"positive on shares of Adobe, given the company will experience the most significant upgrade cycle in its history ever over the next two to three quarters." Adobe's Acrobat 7.0 and its upcoming Creative Suite 2.0 products will account for more than 80% of its sales in 2005, according to Munster's estimates.
I have no idea what new tricks will be up the Photoshop sleeve, but thought that these facts might fuel some interesting speculation. We can all waste our valuable time sharing our collective ignorance. :-)

Anybody have an educated guess as to when it will be available for purchase from online retailers?

Will the Creative Suite 2.0 be available at the same time?

Here is something I found on CS 2.0?

http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0501adobe.html
At first blush, it doesn't look like it will do much for me, but I may not understand the implications of being able to edit filters and make global edits to layers.

Unless there;s something new here, the big question in my mind woud be whether there are changes to ACR that will make future updates in PSCS 2.0 incompatible with PSCS 1.0 -- if you follow that convoluted logic (or lack of same.)

Hi Jim-

Below is a link a found back in Jan. describing what some of the
features may be. It's all I have and may not be accurate, however I
thought you may find it interesting if you haven't already seen it:

There were lots of great improvements for photographers when the current PSCS came out. I'm not so sure those improvements listed in PS 9 are that helpful to me either. But the concern would be the ability to (relatively) cheaply upgrade to PS 10 if it does contain some useful photography improvements. Yeah, screwy logic, but logic just the same!

The answer might help address Pete's question below, which is not screwy logic, BTW. It's an important point.

I just received some upgrade literature on CS Premium from Adobe - basically upgrade to Acrobat v7 but all other components remain unchanged - and I check on that specifically.

Issue - if Adobe is still selling the CS package - except for the Acrobat upgrade all else same - without any change in it's pricing - it's difficult to see another upgrade version being launched in the forseeable future without affronting the 2005 buyers......?

My 2 cents.....

Jim,

I just got my CS and the literature says that it upgrades from v. 5.5 and up, but when I talked with Adobe, the rep. said that they would authorize an update from any previous version. So, there it is right from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

From the Adobe web site:
Adobe Photoshop CS Upgrade
To install upgrade successfully, you will need a licensed version
of Photoshop 7.0 or earlier on the same platform as this purchase.

Important words are "or earlier."

Know one will know until it comes out, but one of the 'features' that was supposed to be in CS was that one could use filters in adjustment layers, something that was ditched at the last minute from my readings. So I'm guessing that it may happen in CS 2. As far as the multiple layers edits, perhaps one won't have to create a new layer to do that ;-) I'm hoping they would improve the internal noise reduction, and although I have it figured out after a few years, a "color management wizard" would reduce some of the bandwidth here. lol. A bump up in speed would be nice too, but we may have to wait for CS3/ps10 for that.

When books (with future publication dates) that include "Photoshop X" in their titles start showing up at Amazon, that's a clue a new version is coming.

Last time I looked (a couple weeks ago) there a few titles of this nature.

Less than a week to go if CS2 is announced at Photoshop World as many predict.

Hi Jim,

I just upgraded maybe a little over a year and now another one??? Means more money and I just spent more than enough on a new digital camera. I hope a new one brings more features than CS did and I hope they wait longer to put out a new version for financial sakes.

I found that the contact sheet and shadow/highlight were two of the best new features that Adobe added. I'm not sure what I would want in the next version.

Anyway, it would be nice to see what will be new.

Thanks for letting us know of the possibility.

Melissa I want a voice recognition capability so tell Photoshop what to do no matter how complicated then just sit back and watch it do the number crunching and the image comes out perfect. ;-) Well I can dream can't I. Seriously the one thing that really caught my attention the first time I saw it mentioned is HDR support. I don't know though if it will be a feature of Photoshop or what. But support makes you wonder, since there are already plugins available that work with Photoshop. This technology is developing all the time and with some amazing results.
