I plan on purchasing my 20D this week and would like to come home with a lens! I, like many here, have read too much. I want to take some pictures of people, places, buildings, city streets, landscape and everything else. I'll deal with a long focal length later. This is an idea, what do you think?

I see that Photodo gave the Canon EF 28-135/3,5-5,6 IS USM a grade of 3.5. I wonder if this would make a great combination with the upcoming Tokina 12-24 f/4 to use on a 20D. My thought is that these two lenses would have better optical quality and greater range than the Canon 17-85. Also, I thought that the Canon EF 28-135/3,5-5,6 IS USM could be on the 20D most of the time with the 12-24 ready to go when shooting wide. I'll have to wait till the Tokina is available, but that is OK. One toy at a time!

Sorry about the empty post. I could not figure out how to edit the post. But here is my reply:

I am on the same boat. I got 20D with 28-135IS. The 28-135 works very well as a walkaround lens. I ordered the 50 1.8. But am sitll wondering which wide angle to get. Would 18-50 EX be a good choic? Or, just get a 17-40L, which I know is a great lens.

Hey Skywalker,

Don't forget the 1.6 digital factor with the 20D. The 18-50 is in effect only a 28-80, which is not really wide. Ditto for the 17-40.

If you want true wide with the 20D you should be looking at the Canon 10-22mm or the upcoming Tokina 12-24mm.

Cheers

Photonutt,

You are right. 17-40 * 1.6 is not a ultra-wide lens. But it should suitable for most landscape pictures. The 28 * 1.6 is too long for landscape.

Rickhot,

I think it is a good lens for many types of pictures. I call it a kids lens since it takes great kids picture. It would be the perfect lens for Disney where you have no chance to switch lens.

Actually, I did some park shots and landscape shots last weekend. You are welcome to see them in my Album. I applied moderate USM on all the shots. If you wish to see the 100% picture, you need to click the download button and get it to your hard disk.

My 28-135 stays on my 20D the most. I really like the lens. I just purchased the new Canon 10-22...don't have enough experience with it yet to report any bad....

28-135 has been primary lens on my (film) A2E before getting 20D - I recently tested it against sigma 18-125 and returned the sigma.

Despite some mixed reviews on this site, I find that DXO Pro software and module for 28-135 gives better results than 28-135 alone. I also tested the module for Sigma 18-125 - my comments above were based on testing both lenses with DXO, although my sense is that without DXO, differences between the lenese were even greater...

ALthough I often think that there's better walk-around lens than the 28-135 (for the 20D, probably the newer IS, 17-85USM), or perhaps "L" lens, but I can't afford "L" glass at the moment...

For wide-angle, I'm "living with" my previous TOkina ATX-Pro 20-25 f2.8 - still not wide enough with 20D, but I can't afford another lens right now...
Skywalker,
