Just received my first digicam ... the S75. Love it so far, but am having the following problem.

Using a new Dell PC with WIN98 SE and have loaded the USB drivers apparently okay. In NORMAL USB mode, I can transfer my pictures to the PC just fine, but when I go to disconnect from the PC, my desktop gets all messed up and I eventually have to re-boot the PC to recover cleanly. I've tried different ways ... turning off the camera, pulling the USB plug, etc. The user manual isn't clear about how to properly disconnect, but it does make a note on p.37 for Windows Me and 2000 users: "... stop the drive by clicking on the Unplug/Eject icon in the task tray ..." there is no such thing on my taskbar or in the systray! For a WIN98 SE user, what is the proper way to disconnect from the newly recognized drive (in my case, removable disk "K")?

Anyone out there run into this? Please help if you can ...Thanks, Theodore

not sure in 98, but I have similar problem in Win XP. After u connected the USB cable, to PC you should see a small icon appear in the status bar, when you finish transfer your pics, go to that icon and righ-click, and stop the Sony USB device there. After u do that, a message comes out tell you "it is save to remove the device". This is what I am doing in XP, I thought that is some bug in XP, I dont really care because it is a beta. Hope this help you.

Theodore,

You make the decision to buy a great camera......the S75......now follow up and buy a great computer.....a Mac G4. Smooth as silk and you do not need to load USB drivers. A review of the S75 manual will reveal what I am talking about...compare the instructions for the two operating systems.....speaks for itself. good luck.

Thanks, Don, for taking the time to try and help. I read the Sony D/L install instructions that refers to the "Fatal Exception OE" error I get, and it doesn't mention the S75, but S70/S50/S30. The install ends with the USB Mass Storage driver version now being 5.2.0512.1 ... which is the version I already have loaded, so I don't think it will help (didn't try it, though). guess I will have to contact Sony.

All the best, Theodore

Whoops! hit the wrong key before replying ...

Thank you for describing what you think I should be seeing and then doing. Since I'm not getting that icon, something may have gone wrong with my USB driver install. I'll try re-installing, but first try contacting Sony T/S.

Yes it is a great camera. Not in a position to buy a Mac G4, however.

o I'm far from being a Windows expert, but the first time I
disconnected from my Windows 2000 system by just turning the S75 off
I got a dialog box with a nasty message about shutting down the
device correctly.

o Next time, following info from the dialog box, I went into Hardware
-> Start/Stop devices (something like that, I can't remember) and
got a dialog box that allowed shutting down correctly before
poweroff. It also had a check box to install an icon in the system
tray -- I turned it on, and the next time I had an icon I was able
to use.

o Hope this helps. And if anyone has any tips for interfacing an
S75/USB with Linux, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Still haven't solved it, but looks like a problem either with my USB install or a WIN98SE driver issue. Will post my solution when I get it. Sorry I can't be of any help re: Linux/USB ... Theodore

mmm,maybe a silly remark,(but it isn't ment that way).
Did you install the driver with the USB cable attached?
I did that and had some problems.

After a reinstall without any cable attached all problems were solved (WIN -ME)...

Theo: I think donop might be right. As far as the icon, I do not have it, and it might have to do with using a floppy adapter. If all else fails, Do the following:

1. Go to control panel and remove the usb driver under remove hardware. 2. Restart the PC then reinstall the driver by running the usb install file in the usb driver directory on the CD (Do not use that silly interface that comes up when you insert the CD, and do not plug in the usb cable until the Driver install is complete).

3. Restart the PC with the Cable plugged in. When the PC is up, turn on the camera. Turn off the camera before before unplugging the cable. This is what I have done, and I have not had any trouble. I am using W98SE.

Hope this works.

Richard ...

Tried sending message below to you via email, but got kicked back to me unknown user ([email protected]) ...

Hi Richard ...

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I followed Sony's instructions carefully when I installed the driver, but it's psbl I goofed. I'd like to remove the Sony USB driver, but when I tried this morning, WIN98SE blew me away with another Fatal Exception error "OE" ... ! I called Sony T/S and spoke to two different guys, neither of which seemed to know much about this problem, IMHO.

The consensus among users I've read about, however, seems to be that with WIN98SE, I will not see that unplug/eject icon. You are the first WIN98SE user I've heard of that is not having the problem I am (you are able to turn off camera and unplug without the error screen), so that is encouraging ... A couple of questions, if you don't mind:

You said about the "icon" ... not having it ... might have to do with using a floppy adapter". what do you mean by that ... floppy adapter?

When you say, " ... go to control panel and remove the usb driver under remove hardware ...", are you meaning remove the sony mass storage driver under device manager? In control panel, there is only a "add new hardware" icon, of course, so you must mean thru device manager. That is where I am now having a problem as I stated in begining of this email. Sony tech was very vague and suggested things like:

1. Are you networked? (yes, to my wife's PC via NIC's) If so, remove networking!

2. Using any other USB devices? (yes, an Epson scanner) If so, remove it .. may be causing interference.
3. "Try" booting in safe mode and remove the Sony USB driver that way.

Haven't tried any of these yet, but will over the weekend.

There HAS to be a way to remove the driver!

Any further thoughts?

Regards ... Theodore

You said about the "icon" ... not having it ... might have to do

There is aflopppy drive adapter for memory sticks (and other memory cards). I do not see the logic of mentioning "eject" in the manual, so I am speculating that the manul is referring to the adapter. I could be wrong.

Sorry. Yes remove it in device manager. It is under "Other devices", "USB Device".

Yes. If you have anyother USB device that was plugged into that port, remove it and its driver. That should not cause a problem, but do it for now. If the prot was never in use before, do not remove any other usb drivers.
3. "Try" booting in safe mode and remove the Sony USB driver that way.
Actually, my wife was working on another networked PC when I installed the driver. I did not know she was or else I would not have done it then.
Haven't tried any of these yet, but will over the weekend.
