Does anyone know of a way to convert the G1's avi file to an mpeg file? I've tried about 6 applications that I found off the net and all of them have trouble reading the file. Help!

Hi Dennis,

I guess I am not the only one finding it a damn nuisance that Canon couldn't just implement an mpeg-codec in the G1. My previous camera (a Sony Mavica FD88) produced mpeg's right out of the camera.

It sounds like you haven't installed an mjpeg codec yet. Go to http://www.morgan-multimedia.com and download a trial-version.

First try if your windows mediaplayer will playit, the following steps will not work until the codec is installed correctly.

I use tmpgenc for conversion to mpeg, you can download this here: http://www.tmpgenc.com . I use the following settings:
  • Video:
  • Rate control mode: 2pass variable bitrate (VBR) -> settings: agv=800, max=2000, min=200
  • Audio:
  • Sampling freq: 32000 Hz
  • Channel mode: mono
  • Bitrate: 32 kbit/sec
Start the the conversion, and in 2 minutes (on my P2/300) you have an mpeg movie. I'm working on a tutorial, when it's online, I'll post it here. It will also feature how to rotate, crop, etc.

The average video bitrate of 800 kbit/sec is the value that I find keeps the quality of the movie pretty much intact. You shouldn't go much lower, except when you deliberately want to reduce file size for the purpose of e-mailing it to some one.

Well, good luck, and if it doesn't work, please post it here, I'll try to fix it.

I know this may sound stupid, but why convert the G1's avi file to an mpeg file? I've only had the G1 for a couple of weeks and have been on a learning curve on this forum and I would like a fast track on video mode. I have made some videos and they work in Quicktime !

Could you please explain me how to use virtualdub to make mpegs? I have succesfully made DivX's with it, but for mpegs I have to use tmpgenc.

No, it does not sound stupid. If the original movies work for you, so much the better! I just don't like having to install yet another player/viewer. Besides, I shoot a lot of movies at the local model airplane field, and I mail most of these movies to other people. I don't want to force them to install software just to watch my movies.

Mind you, my previous cam (Sony FD88) was introduced in february 1999, (that's more than two years ago!) and it produced mpegs straight out of the camera. I think it's just stupid of Canon not to have implemented mpeg (or another compression algorithm already present on windows machines). But that's just my opinion, of course.

One last advantage: on my P1/133MHz notebook computer, the original movies play rather jerky, but once I've converted them to mpeg they play absolutely smooth. It looks like the mpeg algorithm uses less processing power while playing. On my main machine (P2/300MHz) there's no difference.

Thanks...anyway I've got the software you suggested and it works !

So I can have either avi or mpeg. which will be usefull becuase some editers require mpeg. I've tried the same video in both format and I think you may be right about jerkness, but I have a AMD500Mhz so difficult to see or could be my imagination.

Jerome,

I went to the morgan multimedia.com site and it appears that I am a day late for the demo. It expired 7/1. I don't mind buying the full version if I know it will work.

Can you be more specific on how it interfaces with tmpgenc? I downloaded that program and it won't read the file either. I'm sure it needs the codec or something.

So frustrating!

It seems I'm having a problem with TMPGEnc it encodes the video but It gives me an error on the audio. How can I rotate a movie?

Thanks to all! I downloaded the trial version of VideoWave and was able to convert a file to mpg. However, is there a way to further reduce the size? The mpg was the same size as the AVI. 3 to 5 mb is still too large to send as an e-mail attachment.

Where can I download VideoWave? I have been looking for ways to convert the AVI to MPG because Microsoft Powerpoint doesn't seem to recognise the AVI produced by the G1.

Hi

DivX is mpeg! It's the latest and most advanced mpeg standard (MPEG-4)
Unless you want to make at video-cd, DivX is a much better compression standard.

Yes just use divX codec and virtualdub !!
DivX (mpeg4) is mush more advanced than the old mpeg standard.

I know about DivX and it's better quality/smaller filesizes when compared with mpeg1, but again, most people I know do not have the DivX codec installed, so they have to install software to play my movies.

mpeg1 plays on all windows machines, so its the format of choice for sharing movies.

Just my opinion :-), I have nothing against the mjpeg format as such. When I capture video with my tv-tuner-card I use it all the time (and I convert it to DivX, haha)
