Hi this is my first serious attempt to try a pano, I used PS elements2 to do this, its a very small version, if you look at the kerb at the roadside that comes along fro the left it is wonky where each join must be. autostitch outputs a nice smooth kerb, unfortunately it is not so sharp and I can only generate very small files with it using my amd xp-m 2400 laptop and 256mb ram. I have downloaded panorama factory freeware version which looks good and has a focal lengh parameter that may fix the wonky kerbs. I have also downloaded pano tools. havent tried em yet as they look a bit more daunting than elements and photostitch but it should be fun.
The view is from my doorstep, there had been a light scattering of snow.

That looks pretty cool with the light scattering of snow over the street with the Silver 206 on the left. I see what you mean about the joins on the kerb, sometimes you get this with lines on pano's but I'm sure PS can sort it out in one way or another.

I usually try a pano where ever I can then let autostich do the work in a few minutes, I'll have to get use to the method of tiling frames together though.

You should try a few panos in the snow scenes around local parks, you should be able to get some good compositions.

Hi Jim

Nice evning pano you got there, Jim. BTW how come some lights are blue? are that some kind off florucent bulbs? When I testing panoramas I used The Panorama Factory witch have a real easy guide to make panos and ther are "presettings" for many diffrent cameras inkl. S7000 witch probobly would work fine with your 602Z.

Thanks Chris, goodone on spotting the 206 I didnt know thats what it was pity I just couldnt have squeezed in a bit more. yeah the snow came down a bit thicker in the morning and I had already mentally packed my camera bag, then it all thawed, there has been a bit while I was watchin television but it only settled on the car roofs. thanks for the encouragement....paul

Cool flat, yeah, the original had a strong orange cast as In my excitement I forgot my usual custom White balance with a pringles lid hehe, the lights on the building are a different type though, I did get rid of the orangeness of the street lights though then pushed the blues a bit, thought it might make it a bit colder. was just messin about really with my first pano. cool on the pano factory s7000 setting , that should work a treat on the 602, Im quite pleased as I just downloaded the freeware one off the website.
thanks for your comments anyway...catch you later...paul

ps does the flat five relate to an engine? see you have the 304 and d70 as well as the 7000 , my friend took some great pics with her 304 I also have D70, just bought a sigma 18-50 dc off ebay (I could only afford 28-80 kit at time) cheers.....

Thanx Buckshot, ive never really tried either as I could imagine it would be a long drawn out process. It may still be to get rid of all the imperfect bits but I enjoyed the quick results I tried so far, the tricky bit is to get rid of all the wonky stuff, I imagine that is where all the time will be spent. its worth a go though, only if to impress friends and family, wish Id had my camera at one of my previous addreses , the views were awesome.
thanks for the input buckshot...cheers....paul

I have tried several times to do pano's ....with not much luck. I
like the way this one came out. Nice hood too!

Hi Dp, ok yeah , its the line of the kerb near the sidewalk that was wonky..well if you are interested I have tied the version of Panorama factory out , that I downloaded, at first I thought it sucked ,as it was way worse than the elements version with ghosts of parts of the picture, I then remebered the focal lengh setting, I knew I took all the shots at the widest on my 602 which is about 35mm, so I typed this in and went through the process again. the results were near perfect no wonky lines.

so that part of the experiment worked ok, if I can repeat it most times it will be great. Now I gotta get out and try again, this time making sure my focusing is spot on and my white balance is good.

the panorama factory version I have is a freeware download , tap it into google and give it a try ..thats what I did.
thanks for your comments DP....cheers...paul
Hi Paul,

Neat shot, I have not gotten to the pano's yet. I guess the wonky
stuff is the area in the road which appears to be speed bumps. I
like the blue lights an effect that may be used sometime.

Hi Paul, nice bit of work here. Counting the lines on the kerb, I'm guessing this is 5 pictures stitched together?

I use PT gui which is a front end for Panorama Tools, it's a bit pricey (about £40 depending on the exchange rate) but it's an excellent program and is really easy to use and there's a free autostitch plugin that does a lot of the hard work for you. So far I've only used it on the nightclub panoramas that I was asked to take, but I'm hoping to set up some landscape panoramas come the summer.

One thing I found was that the 256mb of RAM that I had on my computer was not enough for doing panoramas. Last year I had to resize pictures first before I tried to stitch them in a trial version of Elements 2, so I used a big chunk of my fee for the nightclub pictures to upgrade to 1gb of RAM.

Nice work Jim. Panos can be a lot of fun, and you never know what ya got until you put them together.

Thanks Jim, yeah your club pano's were pretty far out, the colors were real lovely and it gave you a real good view of the place, its so cool you were able to plough some dough back into your equipment, as if you are like me it can be a bit of a drag having to buy ram when theres lots of others stuff you need, you really need it though, ps elements does ok for speed on my laptop but other programs doing intensive tasks can challenge it, I have cured the broken lines problem using a program called panorama factory, you can input the foca llengh of the lens and it seems to fix the problem. I run it with no other programs on though as its a bit intensive. I love to read of fuji people getting published ,like yourself as the cameras are quite excellent , I am just off to check mrmantispost about his published hummer pics (birds I guess not the 4 wheel drive vehicles, that would make a great joke, post hummer pics and have a humvee pic there hehe) catch ya later mate....cheers....paul

I love the photo and the effect.

I found the reading quite inspiring, really got me interested in trying out my hand on trying to take and put together some pano shots of my own. What software would you guys recommend, I have checked out Panorama Factory, are there any other good ones [freeware if possible]. Other question when taking the pics that I will try and stitch I guess its advisable to use a Tripod?

Thanks.

Hi Robie

If you've got a tripod use it (I need one too) as it will give a more balanced rotation of the scene. I've only tried Autostitch.net and it does quite a good job, if you've got the time try as much free software as you can get your hands on, unless your going to splash out on PS but more time consuming in the processing from what I'm aware of.

One problem with some panos that I've found is if the clouds in the sky are moving the software can have trouble recognising image matches.

Also try and get 30-50% overlap in each frame as the software finds the images easier to work with.

Post some images when you've given it a go, I'd like to see your pano shots. Happy pano shooting.

Regards

Hey Paul, haven't done pano before cause i'm just into digital but if my first serious attempt would came out like this i would be very satisfied !
Very nice indeed .Can't wait to see the next one .

Hello Jim.
Here is what Flat Out comes from.

As I’m a Rally-Driver since 25 years back (I have tried but I can’t quit) and interested in almost everything regarding Rally I follow all that shows on TV from World Rally Championship and it was there I first heard the expression “Flat Out” I don’t know if you herd about the legendary Finnish Rally-driver Tommi Mäkkinen how wan four World Rally Championships of witch three in a row (hat trick) in the mid -90s. It was Tommi how established the expression “Flat Out” in that way when the reporters interview him after a stage and asked him if he hade droved fast enough to keep the lead, he just said in his little bad English languish “ I have droved absolutely Flat Out” meaning that he hade droved at absolutely max speed and with no margins at all. After Tommi many other drivers in almost every motor sport discipline has used “Flat Out” when whey mean that whey hade droved at where absolutely maximum. I hope this make some kind of sense. BTW If I would have one idol in Rally Sport, it would be Tommi.

Yes, now I’m in the lens baying community to. The story goes like this. I think I hade to comfort my self after the depressing weeks without electrical power and with no access to Internet with something, so I got the “crazy” idea to by me one more camera. I bought it this last Saturday (19/2) since it dropped 1500 sek, (app, 100 £ or 200 $ Friday 18/2). I wasn’t home before late afternoon and after 1,5 hour battery-charging I just have tested it with some sunset pictures, and man, isn’t that some serious piece of hardware. The old S304 is used by my youngest daughter, 12 year old Nelli now and I will also keep the S7000 because both of them cameras have its advantages and that’s for sure. I‘ve seen many of your photos and they where looking great, and I hope to someday manage to tame the bests and get some nice photos out of my cameras my self.--
