Hello all

My camera will not turn off. I had just uploaded pics to my computer as usual, unplugged the usb cable, now my camera will not turn off when I switch to off. I flip the switch back and forth and it just stays on. I removed the battery, replaced it, tured on, and it will still not turn off. I took the battery out for several hours and recharged, and still no luck.
Anyone have similiar problem?
Thanks
Todd

try reset button on the bottom of D70 and maybe remove also card.

If you mean it always displays the pictures remaining on your card that is normal the camera doesn't completely turn off but it uses very little power when not on.

The camera will still take pictures when the switch is "off".
The full LCD panel is displayed, not just the remaining pictrures.

Sounds like its not working properly then and will need to be serviced.

Sadly, mine had the opposite problem. It wouldn't turn on, it went on for service today :(

I'm hoping you situation has been resolved. I hate being without it.

Hello all
My camera will not turn off.
FNG here. I was browsing Nikons web site, and I found this. Perhaps you need a firmware update.

Gramps

Issues addressed with B firmware version 1.02

The camera now supports CompactFlash™ memory cards with a capacity greater than 4GB.

When images were captured in Continuous mode at an Image size setting of M and an Image quality setting of FINE, the memory card access lamp sometimes glowed continuously and the camera could not be turned off with the power switch. This problem has been corrected.

Todd,

Did you fix it? Did you have to service it? What's your status with this now?

I have the SAME problem happened just 30 minutes ago. I shall admit it does not make me happy at all. This looks like a ridiculous thing, the camera works well and takes great pictures... whether the power switch is on or off.

Camera worked well for 8-9 days. It did happen a few times before that it would not turn off, but flipping the switch back to on and then to off helped. Now it's stuck for good.

I'm really not happy at all.

nik1024, did you see the previous post about the firmware update and lage capacity CF cards? What firmware are you using and what capacity card?

Yes I saw that. I didn't upgrade so I use 1.02, CF card is 1Gb 80x Lexar, but it's out of the camera so it probably doesn't matter :). Camera is on as soon as the battery is in, no matter what else do I do. Tried the little reset button, putting the battery in when the switch is on, off, with the lens, without lens -- nothing helps. Definitely a send to Nikon service I guess, considering I'm quite busy as-is this makes me really unhappy.

Try This....

Plug camera back into computer,

When plugged in move mouse pointer to bottom right of screen, and click on the safely remove hardware icon. (your camera still thinks its plugged in)
once done unplug usb cable. Camera should turn off now.

Tnanks, I tried it but it didn't help. This happened not when I plugged the camera into PC anyway, I was simply shooting and then it would not turn off. I tried your advise anyway but the problem persists. I strongly suspect it's a mechanical issue inside the on/off switch. It's been 1 day since and still same, no magic I was hoping for it would "heal" after some time :(

Why dont you try that firmware update? The thing rests after an update- so if its a SW issue, it should resolve.

I was thinking about it but few people reported some problems after upgrade and I didn't want to upgrade. I'm the kind of a guy who never fixes things which ain't broke :).

I guess under the circumstances I'll try it later today. I don't have much hopes though and got used to the idea I'm heading towards sending it to Nikon service. I will really miss it more than anything I ever missed :)

I know this is an old thread, but I'm sorry to say I've suddenly had the same problem. I'm sure it is a mechanical problem with the power switch. Obviously other people are having these problems too. Disappointing to say the least.

If you "never fix things that aren't broke", do you fix things that are broke?

Firmware upgrades are the way software programmers and engineers fix things that are broke! Just because your camera works to the best of your knowledge does not mean that that there are no problems to be fixed. They could be subtle, or triggered by combinations of settings you haven't yet used.

Congratulations!
This is the funniest post (and laff) I've ever read in all
of the DP forums in years. :-) :-) :-)!!
