Olympus C-5060 alternatives

Yup & I guess I'm going to be pretty much out front & on my own
with it.
So few people seem to have any interest in it at all!!
Nothing is perfect I know, but this looks like a pretty good choice
for someone like me.
How do you feel about the fact that, in order to use a filter, you have to buy an adaptor, or are you used to that because of the 740 - assuming of course , the 740 is the same as the 750 in this regard?

--

Hmm
I always used to use a Skylight 1a as a basic protection and uv with my SLR's

Strangely I haven't used anything as yet on my 740 - I don't want any bulk on the front - the whole idea now is to keep it reasonably small !!! (nuff said!!)

So - no! it didn't occur to me - I thought I might be able to put a filter on the front directly - if not - then tough I'm not going down the attachment road with it.
Thanks for drawing my attention to it.

That's one reason why I think, if I were in your shoes, I'd go for the 8080.

By the time you got an adapter tube for the 7070, and I wouldn't dream of taking it out without something tp protect the lens, the space saving
would not be so considerable.

I understand what you are saying - and for a long time I have sort of used the 8080 as a reference to judge others by. However it is too big! If I have to put a adaptor on a 7070 then that becomes too big - then I scrap the whole idea and look for something smaller - I started out looking for something smaller but edged up to the 5060/7070

I have never had a tube on my C- 740 - though I can see that the lens could be a bit vulnerable! I stuck it out with the Oly as I like the range of user adjustment - I was thinking about a Canon S70 before hand, or even the Fuji E550 - smaller you see. But then my eyes wandered...
Geoff

The Fuji is like Mohammad Ali in his prime - so fast and light on it's feet that it never gets hit by anything. Varoom and it's out and varoom it's back behind the magic sliding doors. Shoot all you want all day long and throw 2 more AA batteries in it and shoot all night long. Since you already have
the xD cards and probably have rechargable AA batteries if the C-7070
starts to go over you budget you have a nice way out. That 12.3 MP
feature works nicely.

However it will be more exciting for us if you spend the big money and

go for the Oly to be honest about it. 419 pounds is real close to $800 bucks. Those LB.'s are worth more than they used to be!

I know the Fuji is fast - and quite good esp. considering the price - and quite small - that was all my reasons for being tempted. But - on the down side - I understand the screen is not so good in the dark, and maybe the focus isn't either?? The Oly isn't slow though.
boy this thread is going on forever!!

I just looked at comparison pics (that house shot!) and used the C-7000 for the Oly as it is as near as I could get other than the 5060, compared the fuji and the KM A200 and the Oly -which won by a fairly close margin.
Hey Ho
Geoff

I almost bought the 5060 but changed my mind and ended up buying the Nikon 8400. Nikon is having a rebate and you can buy the 8400 for about the same price as the 5060. The 24mm wide angle lens is great and the picture quality is excellent with almost zero purple fringing.

I have a C-740 - which is fine, great zoom, crisp pics. However, I
have been looking for a wider angle lens and a bit more resolution.
I have looked at most other cameras and everything seems to have
some kind of 'fatal flaw' -The nearest alternative was the Canon G6
~ but it only reaches 35mm (equive) and I need a wider angle - then
the little S-70 looked quite good - but suffers more than others
from the purple fringing... The Oly C-8080 is a bit too large and
outside my budget ~ as is the Canon Pro1.. The Olympus C-5060
looked a pretty good compromise - maybe a slightly longer zoom and
more resolution would be nice - but it seemed OK - until I read
lots of reports of it breaking down! On top of that I can't find
any shops where I can actually look at and handle one. (Is there a
major problem with this model?)
I would appreciate any helpfull comments - maybe there is something
else out there with 5 or more MP, 28mm or wider, with the
tweakability that many of the Olympus range seem to have.

Just FYI, the C-5060 and 7070 do have 40.5 mm filter threads; not that common, but I've found a full gamut of this size filters available at the local photo shop. I have a UV for protection while hiking/biking/skiing, and a polarizer - both screw directly onto the lens; they even fit under the stock lens cap.

Also FYI, (and IMHO) it's pointless to consider any other filters, except maybe a filter for UV photography. Filter Factory, PS, PSP, or for that matter Irfanview or GIMP will give you better results - put an 80A on a digital camera and the white balance just compensates.....

Re CP 8400
It's lovely! - I agree, and I'm pleased you got that deal.
We don't seem to have any such deal here in the UK and it's darned expensive!

Also - much as I love it with the 24mm (which is what I always had as a wide fixed lens with my SLR) the 85 tele is just not tele enough for me to use on its own without having to always have my Ultra Zoom with me as well. 100mm is my absolute minimum so the 7070 at 110 just about makes it - I would prefer more but even 200 isn't massively more, but dropping back any more - for me - would really be an irritation Shame! a 240 - 240 UZ would be wonderfull, a 28 - 280 would be pretty amazing thereafter I wouldn't entertain as I already have a 38 - 380

I looked at the KM A200 and checked out what I thought of all these different focal lengths - I fancied that one for a while but I think I have now eliminated it. The few pics I have seen of the 7070 and the many of the 5060 make me feel that it would be fine. The 8400 is one of my most admired of the Nikons along with the 8800 - most of the others seem a bit softer and the images seem a little reddy.

Thanks for pointing that out. In the specs here for Lens thread, it just says, "Yes, optional adapter".

3.2Mpx is 3.2Mpx. 5Mpx is 5Mpx and 5 is bigger than 3.2 by 56.25%.
Yes, if we're speaking in the abstract, but we're talking aboutresolution. A 56.25% increase in the number of pixels DOES NOT translate into a 56.25% increase in resolution. You would need twice as many pixels to increase resolution by 50%. Hence an 8Mp 2/3 type CCD (like that found in the 8080) only offers 50% more resolution than a 4Mp 2/3 type (like that found in the E-10).
