Hey All,
My Bigma arrived 60 mins ago! It's a nice sunny day here in the bootheel of Missouri, so I figured a run to the park was in order. I beg you forgiveness but being as my Reb is still at Canon for repair, I grabbed a Mark II 1d from work to test the lens.
I decided I would only shoot handheld and only at 500mm just to see if I could really disappoint myself. Just for the record, I am not one of those guys that the 1 to 1 ratio works for. I never feel I'm stable enough.
First impressions of the Bigma. It's a good looking lens. I'm a little worried about the "felt" like covering on the lens hood. I'm not the gentle kind with my equipment, and this looks like it could scratch and peel fast. The zoom was a little stiff like has been described, but not uncomfortable. The weight was not as bad as I thought. Not much more if any than a canon 70-200 2.8 L IS.
The reach is incredible! I kept thinking I was at the end and it had more left. It is not hard to find objects in the viewfinder even when extended fully. Shake is noticeable when out at 500 though.
Focus was very fast and by my first few shot accurate. (on this camera anyway) I will wait on the true focus test until my DReb is back next week I hope.
I can tell that this lens is going to be everything I wanted! The test pics below are 2 of about 15 I took. I wanted to show handheld at 2 different shutter speeds. One is at 640th the other is at 250. I know 250th handheld is way out there but again, I am just playin so far.
Just for the record. This lens is not automatic. I can tell there is a learning curve to it. I have a deeper respect for all of you Bigma shooter with the in flight images. That being said, I can't wait to make ALL the mistakes and learn! Just a few snapshots from a 10 minute run to the park for lunch.
Developed in C1, slight usm and quick post.
First shot.....200iso 640th of a sec 5.6 apt. Hand held
100 percent crop
Second shot......200iso 250th of a sec 8.0 apt. hand held (A little shake in the eye is noticable)
100 percent crop
