OT Baby portrait photography

Kids are fun aren't they. I really love the innocence they have. Your picture is absolutely beautiful! Those eyes and outfit are pricelss. Do you have a studio set up?

You should be proud! Your work is great and a beautiful daughter too. I really love the second one.

I now have a decent camera and next is to get lighting/studio stuff or at least know what I am doing.

Yes kids are the thrill of my life and I do have a little make-shift studio in my basement so I have a lot of fun with the grandkids, they're the absolute light of our lives!

Thanks Carrie,
Ingrid

Thanks. It was actually done using available light and black and white film about 3 years ago. Oh and, a whole lot of photoshop lol. I actually need to redo them both now since I'm a whole lot better in photoshop.

I'm trying to figure studio/flash lighting out myself. Here's a collage I'm just finishing up. I'm not sure if I want to put shadows on the ground or not? In any case, it's a lot of work. Even more so since I didn't get the lighting right.

So do you think it will sell? What do you think I should charge for it? It's meant to be a 5" x 30" print.

Now that is unbelievable! Very creative!! I don't know why it would not sell. Where do you sell it? As far as pricing goes I am terrible at that stuff.

I have some people that want me to do some stuff with they're photos and I never know what to charge that makes it worth it for me and reasonable for them.
Hopefully someone can help you on that, and can give a basic start for me too.

Wow! Great shots! I wish I had a studio. :(
change your :( to :-)

my studio is my sons bedroom

all you need really is one good studio strobe, umbrella, stand, and reflector (so far were talking about $300)
i use cheap fabric ($2-3$ yard) for backgrounds

then you need a background stand ($100), or build or figure some way to hang the fabric if youve got someone handy you know. there are lots of plans on the net for building one with pvc piping

so were talking $300-400

and if you have an external flash for your camera that's fairly powerful were talking maybe $100-200
you can do a LOT with a simple set up like this (one light, one reflector)
that's how i started and got some very professional looking portraits
now ive added more lights and light modifiers etc
but the shots i linked to of the babies were done with such a simple set up

Any ideas for a daddy and daughter (1-4 years old) portrait?
Props? Background? Poses?
Does anyone know of a good forum to discuss portrait photography
(color and bw) if the under 5 set? Posing, Backdrops, props,
lighting etc. Thanks!

Thanks! I think I'm going to add a few more bubbles. Basically, I like to offer more than just 8x10 prints. I don't think I can survive on that. So I like to offer fine art collages. etc as premium services. I've developed some standard styles like this one, which don't really save me a lot of time by having made one already. But it does allow me to get the workflow down and that helps. So they can be a little cheaper than doing a custom collage.

Thanks! I actually have a hodge podge(sp?) of stuff. But I have to move furniture around in the living room to setup. I need to do some basic portraiture with the lights instead of just natural light. Natural light is great just not always available. I think I've spent too much time messing around with getting a large high key setup to work (and not too successfully, that I could've spent more time doing some really nice classic portraits.

My next investment is a large softbox.

Would that happen to be you in pic #16???? :)

The pictures are just priceless and interesting to see that you don't need a lot of props to get fabulous and natural photos. Now I'm going to write down the things you said are needed for a studio, far as lighting goes anyway and get my butt in gear! I want photos just like yours:).

I wondered the same thing, about pic #16.

What is it with us old coots and retouching anyway? I would have thought this forum would be crawling with youngsters (teen & 20's), but there are quite a few of us 50's and up-sters.

I guess in our mellowing years we've learned the importance of capturing moments for posterity, and to appreciate beauty.

Congrats on the fine looking family, by the way!

Wow, you look really familiar...

Cute little baby! Except for the diapers and the crying and the constant feeding, they're great!
