Does anyone know of a good forum to discuss portrait photography (color and bw) if the under 5 set? Posing, Backdrops, props, lighting etc. Thanks!

dont know of a forum specific to age groups but the lighting technique forum here is helpful, and heavily weighted towards portraiture in general.

I am not a pro. But I do take care of toddlers and like to take photos so they get to be my practice.

It is very hard to keep they're attention so you have to move fast. I have found though that live to get their picture taken when they get to see themselves on the camera or on the computer. Then I get more attention. It is harder to get them to pose because they do not look natural. If you can get a conversation going on with them and as they are talking take photos of them or say something to get to look at you and then click!

I also have had them look at something on the wall like butterflies or something they find interesting. I personally like the photos of kids where they are not perfectly posed, the other way I think shows they're innocence more. Here is one of the little girl looking at butterflies on my wall. She was "very" hard because she would not sit still. I also had her in one of those snack chairs with snacks so she would stay there.

Thanks! That's a very nice picture. Looking at the wall is a good tip. I've got a lot of tricks in my bag, one thing is a hand puppet that squeaks right above the camera lens.

I'm looking for a couple things:

1) Ideas/Inspiration for mommy and me/daddy and daughter portraits (poses/props etc)

2) Lighting a set that's maybe 5x8 feet or so that I can let the toddler jump up and down, dance, whatever and I can take shots but he stays well lit wherever he is on the floor. I'm thinking use a very big soft box behind and above the camera. Or put it to the right and then use a reflector on the other side? One of the issues is, I don't want to change the lighting if one of the grownups comes into the shot and dances with the toddler.

Thanks! I'll peruse that for awhile.
Something I do once in a while, when I tear myself out of this forum:) is do a google search on child's photography, if I see some pose I like, I save it in a file. Most of my work is also child photography so I found this thread interesting. And very good site that feivel just posted, have to check that one out too.

The image is missing feivel but I definitely remember it, it was totally adorable. Guess if I went through all the posts it might still be on one of them:) Darn dial-up drives me crazy.

Feivel,

Your original image went missing while the thread was still active. I had included it on my version I posted, but you never answered further and yours disappeared so I though you didn't want it shown any more for some reason, and I removed mine too. It was cute.

Very nice photo Carrie. And good little bag of tricks you have. You'd never know the reall setting looking at it. The kids' parents must love having these! Great combo, part babysitter, part phtographer. :)

I painted my studio a different color, then took 199 pics of my little grandaughter and found to my disgust that I had nothing but shadows. So I changed the background in one and just posting the other cause it's cute! Any suggestions on these would be muchly appreciated:) besides the awful colors!

I'd do a Google search and browse the zillions of photography sites that cater to little kids. They alwys have tons of awesome shots and ideas for setups.

Here is one of my favorite sites to view....lots of setups, lots of mommy and kids shot, lots of fun shots...

Like Feivel and Ingrid, I just shoot away with my grandson, THEN turn it into something fun............
