I have ordered an Expan system, and would like to know how the seamless paper rolls fit into this. Does the Expan background Paper drive system fit snugly into the rolls of paper?

Thanks

I'm interested in how well it works.

Yup, you just stick the expan stuff into the ends of the cored paper rolls, and tighten them down. Works great. I personally have trouble with the chain hopping off the gears every now and then, but it definitely beats the homebrew system I was using before.

Do you have a problem with the roll sagging? I used to use a 10 foot stick of 1/2 inch electrical conduit to support my seamless paper roll, but the core would bend and I had trouble rolling it back up. I now use 1-1/4 inch conduit, which is a lot stiffer, and it works fine.

As I understand it, the Expan system just supports the core on the ends.

i've seen this posted online before. i've never seen one sag on the expan setup and i've asked several people with the same system: no one has ever mentioned a sag. i've also seen them hung in stores for months, if not years, no sag to be seen.

are you leaving it rolled down for extended periods of time? is the room particularly humid?

the core is fine if properly set up.

I used conduit previous to the Expan system, and it sagged. Since I moved to the Expan system, I haven't had any issues with the roll sagging.

Paul,

Thank you very much. I've only just noticed that there are two possible chain systems(plastic, and metal) and I've ordered the plastic one. Is there a real advantage to ordering the metal one, or will the plastic suffice. This will be a home studio.

I have the plastic chain, and I have some problems with it. However, I bought my system used, so I don't know if it's just my particular setup, or what.

It does seem like the metal chain would hold together better. On the other hand, it's no big deal -- if you have problems, you just put up the ladder and fix it. . . try the plastic -- if it works, great, if not, you can easily replace it with the metal ones.

Robert,

It sagged when it was rolled up, which it was 99% of the time. It is in the basement, and I don't use it very often; it could easily sit rolled up for several weeks.

It's not a sag that you would notice just looking at it. It would become obvious when you went to unroll the paper, and the paper would have kind of a "wave" in it. I cured the sag by giving it a turn whenever I walked by it. I would rotate it until the "high" side was up. The permanent sag went away.

The half-inch conduit bows a lot when supporting the roll so that it is actually just supporting it from the ends. The conduit I have now it 1.5" OD, and it does a great job.

I will probably get the Expan system myself because it will make it so easy to roll the paper back up and to switch colors. Right now I only have the one color.
