Well, what can I say?

I got my new 20D yesterday. Unfortunately, was really busy at work so could only take a few happy snaps of work mates, under less than ideal conditions.

Remembering that I am coming from a Nikon 5700 (what I think of as an advanced 'Point and Shoot', but a non-SLR never the less, these are my initial reactions:

I love the weight, it feels good and chunky.

I love the finish, I'd heard that it was a bit plasticy, but it has cool textured rubber around the grip and feels great. I don't know if I will need the battery grip.

The concerns with the CF card slot being opened by accident when still writing are, IMO, a bit silly. I mean, you have to unclip the door before opening it! From the descriptions, I thought it was just a flap that could open at any time.

It's FAST! I have a 1GB Sandisk Ultra II and this thing just flies. I only had large JPG initially (and until I worked out how to take it out of the Program modes) but have now turned on RAW and L JPG and can't detect any difference. The buffer probably helps.

Low light photography: I am almost speechless. I can FINALLY take photo's in conditions that I coulkn't even dream of with the 5700. I mean, I just pick it up, click the shutter button, it's awake in a nano-second and I point it, get focus confirmation and fire. With or without flash!!! Geez. I am going to enjoy this!

I mean, I took this photo without a flash, for [insert deity name here]'s sake:

(It was converted from RAW, denoised and sharpened in PS)

RAW: Well, without getting into the arguments, I have been playing with the raw converters today (for a couple of hours anyway) and I think I am going to be a Capture One LE convert. The flexibility and the ease of use are just amazing. I prefer it to Camera Raw in PS CS, but will have to wigh up the cost.

Here's another, obligatory, cat photo. This was taken with onboard flash, in an almost dark room. I just love the burst of pre-flash so the camera can achieve focus:

So, guess what I'll be doing this weekend? Yup, going photo mad! You guys and girls are going to hate me....

Oh, down side? The 20D is a complex piece of machinery. It's going to take a while for me to get used to all of the modes and the options. It was (and is still) rather daunting. But, that's what we enjoy, right? :-)

Without labouring on the point too much, I am like a pig in sh*t.

I got mine about three weeks ago and feel the same way as you do. I have used Sony and I have the f828 which is a pretty good camera. When I saw the 20D I was reluctant to jump to DSLR because I dragged around a lot of hardware for 51 years and was tired of the work necessary to do so.

The 20D is forcing me to think like a photographer again ! I love it!

Such a shame to get such a fine camera in mid winter in Oklahoma. However this period gives me a good opportunity to tackle the camera/lens learning curve and be ready for the skies of spring.

Happy for you,
Darryl Cox

Congrats Simon. We all remember when we got our cameras and the
excitement that went along with it. Have fun this weekend!
Todd, I feel like a new kid at a new school. Was out 'playing' in the city, a fire engine came towards me, I thought "Aha, a good test for the AIServo mode". Do you think I could work out how to change it? Nope :-(

Worked it out in the end though :-) I think. Now I just need to take a looksee at the results.

I enjoy its speed and the usability of higher ISOs.
Juli, this is going to sound like a broken record, but I just can't get over the fact that I can take usable photo's inside, without a flash. I am going to have so much fun with this!

It's 30 degrees Celcius here at the moment (but a bit muggy, so it's uncomfortable) and the sun's shining :-) So, will be having a Nana nap this arvo (late night last night) and then heading up to a vantage point over the city to take some late afternoon shots.

I'll think of you :-)

I've only had mine a couple of weeks -- and I agree with your assessment of the cam :)

As for the low-light thing -- simply amazing. I bought the Canon 85mm 1.8 lens (OMG, now THAT is heavy) and here's a shot I took with it in Queens last weekends...

This is out the window of a car at NIGHT (husband was driving, I'm not THAT skilled LOL). This is the kind of shot I would have only imagined was possible with a tripod or way too much noise/grain.

LOVE this Camera!

I'll look forward to seeing a lot of photos from you soon :)

I took a photo of the pie warmer in a pie shop, it was under heating lights and was rather dark. I asked permission first and just snapped it with no flash. It's turned out great. I took a burst of 5 or so of a girl cutting up rock candy, just of her hands, they turned out great. This was RAW and JPG large. I just can't get over this.

Great pic of Queens with a heavy lens ;-)

Yup.

Am processing in Capture One now, will upload to Pbase shortly. Will be uncropped, rotated etc, just WB and Exposure adjusted.

I don't have a 20D yet, but it was such a pleasure to read your post! It's very refreshing to hear someone sharing their joy and excitement with their new camera instead of someone complaining.

Not that the complainers don't have real issues, just that it's nice to remember that more often than not everything is just perfect. It helps me remember what a joy photography is!

BTW, darling kitty :-).

Welcome to the club!

I got my 20D a month ago. Yes, its such a joy to use.

Glad to see another person from Perth with a 20D and contributing to dpreview. I enjoyed the 300D but the sheer speed of the 20D is just in another class.

Have fun and shoot those 4toes :)

Nothing is foolproof 'cos fools are such geniuses.

I knew what you were going to say. That was my reaction too after
moving up from the 300D.
Haha, multiply it by 100x and you know how I feel now. It's like I'm free. However, tonight I have been dragged back to earth a little. You still can't shoot the impossible (dark shadows and bright sky, without blowing one out or making the other too dark), however, you can fix them far more easily.
The speed of operation and low noise high ISO operation are treasures!
May you capture many wonderful moments with this outstanding tool.
Thanks Isobel.

I must admit that I consciously went in to it to be up beat. I was getting a little depressed reading about all the problems that others had been having. Now I'll find that I have 2' back focus or something!
BTW, darling kitty :-).
Thanks. He knows it ;-)
