Hi all,

I've created a Photoshop 6 action that works great for sharpening your D30 pictures without introducing halos, artifacts and noise.

It is a combination of various proven techniques like: Ultra-sharpen5 PRO plugin and channel mixer contrast enhancer.

I optimized this action for the D30. It works well with LOW sharpening or NORMAL sharpening from the D30 parameters.

Basically it works the same as Ultra-Sharpen5 PRO, but it has the following significant improvements:

1) It's a “tweakable” action (not a plugin) which means you can set whichever setting you find appropriate for your images depending on its size and/or subject.
2) It works in 16-bit or 8-bit Tiff files.
3) The edge contrast is enhanced using a Channel mixer setting.

4) It's customized for the D30 and it works well even with the default settings. Great for batching pictures.

Since this actions works similarly to Ultra-SharpenPRO 5 (with a few enhancements and optimum setting for the D30), the instructions on how to use it are almost identical. Here is the manual online:
http://www.sonic.net/webpub/ultra-sharpen/downloads/manual.pdf

Enjoy!
Any feedback welcome.

That's very odd Robert.
It works perfectly on my machine.
Make sure you have:
Photoshop 6.01. I haven't tested on a Mac, so I guess it will only work on PCs..
Let me know if you still get the problem. It should work better than USP.

Hi FRED,

I'm having the exact same problem Robert described, i.e. view boxes are empty and no pixels are selected. I have PS 6.0.1 and am running Win98 if that makes any difference. UltraSharpen Pro 3.0 works fine. Thanks in advance for all your work.

Kurl,
Now that you wrote that, I'm sure something is missing.

The odd thing is that on my Photoshop 6.01 it works perfectly. I tried uninstalling Photoshop and installing again and it works everytime.

First the screen shows the edge selection with “Levels” for editing, and then it opens a “Blur” window and then another levels (just like USP). Everything is suppost to work on an image duplicate. At the end, the selected pixels are to be loaded on the 16-bit image and sharpened.
Which step are you missing?
I want to correct the action but I can't see where it could be a problem.
Anybody had success with it?
PS: I'm using windows 2000

FRED,

I tried stepping through the action by double-clicking on each line in the action window. It appears to me that after the duplicate layer is made from the background layer, the next step in Channel Mixer results in a totally black image. From there on out, nothing works right. Hope this helps. I'm not sure just what you are trying to achieve in Channels. Good luck.

FRED,

Sorry but there is no change in the new version. It appears that in the channel mixer, no selections are being made and therefore the image remains totally black. Wish I was informed enough to help. Maybe someone with more knowledge of PS actions can offer some advice.

Thanks for this nice action!

Holding aside the problems had by others in your first version and any negative comments by others who may be or may not be who they said they were ...

I would like to try your goodie but ...

where precisely does it go in PS6.01 -

Ultrasharpen Pro goes in the automate directory and file extensions are LI8.

Your file has an ATN file extension. The only place that I can find such like on my setup is in Vivid Test Strip\Action

So...

While it may work like Ultrasharpen Pro, it is somewhat different in installation. Please enlighten me and others who are less expert on Photoshop.

Morto,
Photoshop actions have an extension "atn".
How to install it?

Open Photoshop, click on the little "triangle" right next to the "actions tab" and click on "load action...". Then browse to where you saved my action and click "load".

Automatically my action will be placed on the "actions" tab with the following "set" name:
"EdgeSharpen 16-bit".

Now to start it, import an image into Photoshop, click on the action "EdgeSharpen16bit", which is right below "EdgeSharpen 16-bit", and press Play (the little triangle at the bottom of the actions window).
From there it's pretty similar to USP5.

PS: Note that the MAIN difference between USP and this action is that my action WORKS with 16bit tiffs. Also its defaults can be customized to your taste. For example: double click on Gaussian Blur and set new defaults. Next time the action runs, it will have your customized defaults. It's great for batches.

I hope this helps.
Enjoy!

You're welcome. I'm glad that the action works for Mac systems as well.

I mostly use a G4 at work and now I can be sure that Egdesharpen is compatible with both platforms.

My workflow has been using the Egdesharpen action to all images and then use Photoshop USM before printing or posting on the web with different settings depending on the size and subject.

I leave the RAW sharpness parameter to LOW. I've being getting excellent results.

Best,
FRED
