hello,

I'll get a S3. I don't which flash I should buy for it. Nikon SB-800 might be a choice but a Metz 54 MZ-4i it's cheaper. do you have any experience with Metz 54 MZ and S3? is the SB-800 the money worth? or better another flash?

thanks.

Willy

I have used the SB80DX with it and the results were better than I had using it with the S2. While at PMA New Orleans, I got to ask a quick question of a photographer FUJI had demonstrating the S3. He said the 80DX would work fine but told me that if I could afford it, buy the SB800. Hands down it is better than the 80DX in every way.

there are diferences between own nikon speedlights

sb 800 works in diferent way than sb80dx in S2 and S3

I dont believe that metz can build a similar flash to a sb800 ( just about patents ).

I have the sb-800 and I love it. I don't have anything to compare it to, like the 80dx or metz. But I am completely satisfied w/ the sb-800. I would never buy another flash for my s3. I believe it is a much better flash from what I've read and the photos I've seen.

I am planning to buy 2 more soon.

Sorry if I am not alot of help, I am just a satisfied sb-800 owner.

Willy,

I purchased the SB800 from B&H to use on my S3 and love it. Just point and shoot.

I don't believe you will be sorry if you get the SB800. It's just a great flash for the S3

If i did'nt have the 80DX i'd buy the 800 , but although the 80DX was a pain on the S2 , stick it on the S3 and it works fine , i don't use flash a great deal , always try for available light , but stick the 80DX on auto and it gives great results .

Hi Brian,

I am using the old SB-26 on my S2 and I am going to buy the SB-80DX or SB800 as my second flash.

Could I know why you will say that the 80DX was a pain on the S2 ? Thanks.

The outstanding reason why you should have the SB800 for the Fuji series of cameras, S2-S3, is that there are a large range of situations in which you want to take pictures but there is not enough available light for the camera to properly focus. You will hear the terrible grinding noise and see blurred images zoom in and out as the camera searches for enough contrast so that it can focus. The SB-800 puts out a nice pattern of IR light that rerely disturbs a customer but which allows the camera to focus, quickly and exactly and you will get properly exposed pictures that are also in focus. If your Flash system does not have the IR assist for focus, you will be throwing away about 50% of the kinds of shots you can get if you have the IR focus assist.

The weak link in the S2/S3/ D100/D70/Kodak 14 and most assuredly the Nikon F80 camera system is that the focus mechanism requires a relatively high threshold of light to focus the camera. That threshold is often exacerbated when the subject you are shooting is either black, as in a black tuxedo, or is just very dark. When the location you want to be in focus is very dark, the level of illumination that is required by the Nikon F80 series of adaptation cameras is pretty high and that IR focus assist is wonderful. You can even turn off the flash and use that IR to help focus the camera and that works very well. However, if you use it just for focus assist, you have to make sure your camera is stable before doing it because that level of illumination will generate pretty long exposure times.
