I shoot theatre productions, and found several large, fine jpg files to be corrupted with horizonal lines in the dark, noisy areas. I was shooting with the 50 mm 1.4 lens, 1600 ISO, 1/60. The files were stored on an IBM 340MB microdrive. I've eliminated the chance that the files were corrupted in tranfer to the computer (I loaded them two different ways, through two different computers.)

Other factors: there was a lot of radio transmission in the theatre from FM microphones. I had the camera set to shoot continuous, although the files corrupted don't seem to be in any particular sequence. The mode was P. Tripod mount.

Any ideas?

I had similar problems before - try to use a CF card and see what happens.

Same thing has happened to me, horizontal lines in dark areas....infrequently, and random near the top in "landscape" position......BUT one thing has been constant, and that is shooting in "continuous" mode. I use different CF cards, and two different lenses, but I have NEVER seen these lines when shooting in single shot mode!

I have seen the same thing and can reproduce it. In my case it only appears when I'm using the 50/1.4 and a custom WB. No other lens exhibits the problem. ISO has always been 800 when I've seen it, and it's always been under fluorescent or mercury vapor type arena lighting.

I have had this problem.. Actually very badly and have been able to isolate some causes.

1. Using my el-cheapo 28-80 USM lens and shooting in continuous mode the problem was very bad. I never use this lens any more.

2. I have seen something similar, but much much fainter using my 75-300 IS USM lens. This has been only once and so faint I did not worry about it. Again it was in continuous mode.

3. Querying this and other forums, the responses have indicated that continuous mode is a factor, and the noise is very lens-dependent. I have seen very bad examples from the 28-80 lens. You should avoid using the lens which causes you problems if possible. You may wish to consider sending both back to canon for analysis if this is not an option.

Canon Inc. (Japan) told me that they were unaware of these kind of problems, but that i could send in my kit for testing. I located the source of the problem myself, and as I never intended to use that lens with the D30, I simply stopped using it and didn't bother sending my kit to canon. I did however inform them of my findings.
