I am sure this has been covered before on here, but please bear with me.

I took some B&W pictures today in RAW mode. They look fine on the camera LCD screen. In EOSViewer they are fine. In DPP they are in colour and in PSCS they are in colour. What is going on?

Clearly the B&W and RGB data must be there somewhere in the file so how can I get them to appear in all programs as B&W?

David - The RAW file contains all the sensor info, including color. The B&W mode is for the JPEG file format. Either shoot in JPEG mode or RAW+JPEG to get a B&W picture. In Photoshop there are a few easy ways to make a color picture B&W, desaturate, convert to grayscale, etc.

Good Luck.

I am sorry I should guess it to be the 20D by the fact you said in cam viewer is B&W but what sort of bothers me is that I thought the B&W mode on the 20D was a true B&W mode not just a how should I call it "filterd" B&W mode. Hell if I wanted to do black and white using filters I would use PS to do the conversion not a fixed camera algarithm.

I think you have to use EOS viewer to create the JPEG/TIFF from RAW to get the B&W camera settings done right. DPP apparently knows nothing about B&W, but EOS-V has B&W controls.

Yes I think that is what is puzzling me. Clearly it just uses a greyscale converter. What is also clear is that it must be somewhere in the RAW file or EOSviewer would not show it as B&W. I used some B&W filter effects too and there is no evidence of these in the colour versions.

I think it is probably preferable to shoot in Colour and convert to greyscale in B&W.

Yes there are several ways to do it in PSCS. The simplest is to go into channel mode and scroll through the channels - you will probably find one of the colour channels is a perfect B&W image.
