I have a friends wedding coming up and need to know if the f2.8 would be a necessity or would the f4 be enough? I've been meaning to get one of these two fine lenses any how but I'm not sure if I can swing the extra cash for the f2.8 by the wedding.

Are you the photographer for your friend's wedding, or
you just want to take some good pictures of the wedding
(but someone else will be paid to photograph the event) ?

If the first, consider if you want to remain their friend after the
wedding. If so, spend as much as you can afford ;)

The f/2.8 is about 3.2 lbs. and almost 8" long w/o the hood. It would be a bit unwieldy indoors in a crowd. In fact, I don't think I'd want that focal range for wedding shots. If you shoot in the 70mm range, you'll have a flash anyway, I assume. I consider the f/2.8 an outdoor lens. The f/4 would be my choice of the two for that particular task if you wouldn't give me another option.
