There is when you want to clean the sensor.

And the one on the 2 second timer.

Self-Timer Notes (p. 57 English manual), last paragraph.
2 second delay ups the mirror.

The way it works, all metering (like pre-flesh etc) is done when you press the release. Then mirror goes up, then there is a delay of 2 seconds...

Look at "self timer notes" ... sounds like it's automatic with 2-second self timer. (On the film 7, I believe it's customizable - on or off). You set the camera to 2-second self timer, press the shutter release, and the mirror flips up. This reduces mirror-induced shake that can affect high magnification shots (long teles or macros) at certain moderately slow shutter speeds.

This 2-second timer with MLU is one of the
highlight features of the 7D. Clearly the
engineers are photographers themselves.

Agree, it is the 2-sec self timer. This is probably the best feature a camera can have especially when shooting with long lenses at relatively low shutter speeds. I really saw the difference in images with the Max 9xi (doesn't have mlu) and the Max 9 (does have mlu). On static objects, I use this feature instead of a cable release. Also, best used with the camera on a tripod. I would not have bought the D7 if it did not have this feature.

Does the camera have the possibility of a Bulb setting or is 30s the max exposure?

Yes. It has bulb. To activate it, you just set the shutter speed for the next longer setting than 30s.

A couple other points. One, there's no reason ever to user MLU when shooting hand-held, besides the fact that you're trying to aim blind. Two, it's good to use the cable release even when using MLU, as you can still cause the camera and lens to shake for quite awhile if you're using a big lens. The combination of cable release, MLU, and a large tripod and study head (oh, yeah, almost forgot AS) will, in combination, give the sharpest results.

I assume mirror lockup works if you use a cable release?

Absolutely ! That's my preferred mode, though if I'm lazy or can't find my short cable release and don't want to bother with the long one, I just forego the release ... haven't seen any negative impact due to vibrations lasting over 2 seconds !

Personally, I still wish for true MLU that's easy to access (unlike Canon's which most users gripe about being difficult to access through menus). A roll of 36 slides of songbirds I just took (400/4.5 + 1.4X at ISO 50 in a snowstorm gave me 1/20s shutter speeds, so MLU was in order) shows why ... it's really hit or miss whether a bird that's looking up at one instant is turning its head, preening, pecking at a seed 2 seconds later. So you shoot lots of extra shots. Which, of course, will be much less aggravating when I'm not spending $10 a roll on film & processing :)

Why use MLU, when AS is here ?

is the pictures where using MLU more RAZOR sharp then with AS alone ?

AS and finger-shooting on a tripod would, by my head be enough...
I don't know that AS works in the same critical range of small vibrations that the mirror causes ... I've yet to see a critically sharp shot taken with AS ... lots of "acceptably sharp" shots, but not at the same level that you expect when you lock down a camera on a heavy tripod. Yet mirror shake can soften an image even when taken on a locked-down tripod.

Also, I wouldn't expect AS to be able to suddenly compensate for vibration that wasn't present before pressing the shutter release that is introduced by the mirror just before capturing the image ...

(I wasn't under the impression AS was designed to work with a camera on a tripod ...)

It would be awfully nice to be wrong in this regard !

Look at your drive mode control dial, it is the 2 second self timer. When you depress the shutter button to take a picture, the mirror is raised and locked 2 seconds prior to the lens opening.
Hope this helps.
