I've had my 20D for a couple of weeks now and I'm hoping someone might be able to help with a couple of queries.

The first related to flash exposure compensation (page 96 in the manual).

The instructions say that you press the metering/flash button, set the power switch to the top position and use the large wheel to set the EC.

On my 20D, the compensation seems to "work" (i.e. the viewfinder and LCD both indicate FEC is working) while the power switch is still in the "on" position.

I've no reason to think this is a problem, just curious about the behaviour.

The second query relates to depth of field on my 17-85 IS. Do tables exist with approximate depth of field figures for this lens at different focal lengths and distances to main focused subject? I've taken some close shots (1-2m to subject) and some at approx 10m to subject at F7.1 and was expecting more of the frame outside the prime focus point (which is perfectly sharp) to be in focus.

Thanks for any help (and sorry if these are daft questions - I'm still getting used to the camera!).

For number one, I'm not sure. Does the mid position of the On Off switch on your camera disable the thumb wheel for other activities?

Thanks for the dof link. Exactly what I needed.

About the FEC, the thumb wheel seems to be working as the manual predicts in all other cases....

between on and off is supposed to disable your rear thumb wheel to prevent accidental rotation. Is your thumb wheel working in all three positions?

I think your experience with the power switch and FEC is perfectly normal.

The switch only needs to be set to enable the thumb wheel to initially set the FEL. Once it's set, you can turn the switch to disable the thumb wheel. You're not turning FEL off, just your ability to use the thumb wheel.

Not sure exactly what mean. The wheel only changes settings when a button has been pressed to set whatever mode change is required. Rotating the wheel without first pressing a button doesn't change anything, when in the 'on' (middle) position.

predicts in all other cases....

All I'm trying to say, is that there are three positions to your On/Off switch. (a) off, (b) on, but rear thumb wheel disabled and (c) on with rear thumb wheel enabled.

The instructions are telling you that for the thumb wheel to be used, the On Off switch has to be in the vertical position ((c) above) so you have to switch it to position (c) if you are doing compenation. Once the compensation is done, it can be in position (b) and (c) (but obviously not (a).

Hmm. I think my problem was not being clear in my original post (sorry).

The FEC amount can be changed while the power switch is still in the 'on' position (if the meter/flash button is pressed first).

To see what I mean, set the 20D power switch to the 'on' position, press the metering/power button, rotate the thumb wheel and (hopefully) see the exposure compensation amount change as the wheel is rotated. Set it to (say) +2. If you take shot, the FEC will be applied.

According to the manual, because the power switch hasn't been set to the upper position (rather than the 'on' position) the FEC 'shouldn't' work.

I've just tried a test. I followed the manual's instruction for setting FEC except that I didn't at any time set the power switch to the top position. Instead, I left it at the 'on' position. FEC worked perfectly (one shot exposed normally, then I tried another +2 stops over exposure).

As I said, I'm not sure this is a fault. If you follow the manual to the letter, it works as designed. However, using the method above also works!
The switch only needs to be set to enable the thumb wheel to
initially set the FEL. Once it's set, you can turn the switch to

Understood.

That works, but it also works as per my post of a couple of minutes ago (using your (b) position still changes the FEC, provided the thumb wheel movement was immediately preceded by the meter/flash button being pressed).

From experimentation, there's no need to use position (c) to set FEC, at least on my 20D!
The instructions are telling you that for the thumb wheel to be
used, the On Off switch has to be in the vertical position ((c)
above) so you have to switch it to position (c) if you are doing
compenation. Once the compensation is done, it can be in position
(b) and (c) (but obviously not (a).

FEC can be changed in either of the on modes and only by pressing the FEC button first. EC can only be changed when the switch is in the top on position.

Thanks for confirming - seems it's the manual not explaining things quite throughly enough!

adjustment. You can't accidentally adjust FEC because you have to
