Warning.. firmware update caused my non-canon flash not to fire at all! Version 1.0.0.1 works well with my Achiever 260AF flash, but after updating to version 1.0.0.2 the flash does not trigger at all...

JeR,

My Achiever 260AF still works just fine after the upgrade. My flash is actually a pentax model and I have to tape over all but the center contact. It has worked fine with all three firmware versions.

This is the final blow from Canon... I have been suspecting that non-Canon flash problems have been there intentionally, and this just confirms it. Looks like the G1 will be the last Canon camera I ever own.

JeR, does the camera let you revert back to 1.0.0.1? At least this time you have the old software and attempt a revert. Anyhow, thank you very much for the warning, though I'm sorry to hear it happened to you.

This is what I've been afraid of the whole time. Since you use a non-Canon flash, you probably have followed discussions on non-Canon flash problems. Thank's to Canon's attitude, that's how they decided to "fix" the problems we've been screaming about for so long. No wonder they don't list all the changes they've made. It makes me puke.

Hope you are able to undo the damage.

No, you can't revert to a previous version, I'm afraid.

Hey Michael,

I still can't find any functions that let me revert back to the version my camera first came with... Gosh I guess I'll have to save up for the more costly orginal EX flashes... if it has been done intentionally then looks like Canon is following after Sony... Yikes!

cheers

Guys I think you are jumping to a false conclusion. My Achiever 260AF still works. Perhaps JeR is doing something wrong?

Or can you bring it to a camera store, borrow a single pin Sunpak or Vivitar and see if it fires? If a $70 Sunpak 383 works and you don't care for E-TTL then there is no reason to spend the bucks on a 550EX.

Maybe Canon has not disabled those dumb single pin flashes but just those dedicated Canon-compatible ones. I would try to install 1.0.0.1 firmware and see if the camera will accept it.

Michael
Guys,
My Achiever 260AF is for Canon EOS... there are those made for
Minolta, Pentax but all named 260AF.

Perry,

My G1 with 1.0.0.1 works well in Tv and Av modes, but is practically useless in M mode due to the notorious "Wide Angle Mistiming" problem as Kelvin calls it. How does your G1 with 1.0.0.2 behave now? Did M mode get fixed or did Tv and Av get screwed as well?

Michael

Michael,

Why don't you just get rid of your G1 and buy something else if it gives you so much grief. I have a Canon 300EZ which I can't use (same problem as you) but I am not complaining. I am using a non-Canon, Image 100 hand held flash gun with auto exposure set on the flash, and set the G1 to manual mode and I am getting great results. True, it does not always expose properly, but at least I don't have to buy film...

p.s. Can someone tell me how to insert pictures into messages?

Thanks

Money and Ebay hassel are the hold back, and yes I bough a bunch of accessories for it before "discovering" this insiduous problem. I too have been able to get great pictures outdoor consistently (using Av) and indoors enough of the times (using trial & error), but it's important for me to learning photography the proper way. Grief phase is over, I just don't want to reward Canon for screwing up.

Michael,

I have not fully tested the exposure at all values. I put the camera in M mode set shutter to 125 and F-stop to 4 as the flash suggests and got a pretty good exposure. It overexposed slightly because I probably over estimated the subject distance. Shutting the aperature did lower the exposure. However, I was able to see exposure differences with different f-stop values before the upgrade so I am not sure I see the timing problem to begin with.

Mine exposes OK at f4.0 too. At at f3.5 or f5.6 full wide-angle it's about 2 stops brighter than f4.0. Yours probably will not behave exactly the same way though.

It probably does. I rarely use the flash so when I do its not a problem to find the right combination in M mode by trial and error. At least I can see the results immediately and compensate.

I followed the earlier threads about the G1 and manual flashes. I did not test my set up then because I really don't consider the Achiever as a "high end" unit. I am just happy that the G1 can trigger it and it is an improvement over the internal flash.

My photography lives around the flash, that's why it is so important to me. I would use the external flash even outdoor in bright daylight just to properly expose people's faces and the landscape the same time. My flash is off only when photoing objects and pure land scape.
