Just found some great free software from google. It's called picasa 2 and it is just out today or last few days. It is not quite elements 3 but in many ways does a lot more.

It will catalogue all the photos in your hard drive and it looking stunning. Much better than elements 3 in this respect. It also has some nifty fixes for your photos.

Your can download it from picasa.com

I agree. I also discovered it today. It's simple and very effective. The basic tools you really need. Lots of good ideas in it like the integrated backup management of your pictures...
I think I'll use it a lot.
Just wondering if it manages Raw files?
:)

cool software, I just downloaded it.

thanks for the headsup!

Thanks. I wasted 30 bucks on PSAlbum2.0, on sale no less. This program looks easier to use with more features.

Warning: Anyone know what and why there is a 4.0KB file in EVERY folder on my computer named Picasa.ini after I have installed it? They do not delete after an uninstall. I am confident that they are not malicious or anything, but still...4.0 in every folder can add up.

Wow, what a huge difference from version 1. This newest version has everything but the kitchen sink. It really does put Adobe photoshop album to shame. It is not quite up to ACDSEE 7 for organizing, but it's comes very close and is free. It also has a few tricks that ACDSEE doesn't, especially the special effects.

Anyway to tell this stupid program to only catalog the folders I want cataloged?

The choice of my documents OR the entire computer and everything attached (I just LOVE the way it is going through my backups. No, wait, the opposite of that. I hate that.)

This looks very interesting but I really only want it to catalog one set of folders.

Hey, great. It has found my email attachment folder. I should have a nice catalog of every cat foto my mom has mailed me.

If you hold down the alt and ctrl keys while your cursor is over a thumbnail, it will view it full screen. Let go of the keys, and it's back to normal thumbnails. No need to highlight the photo, just move your cursor over it. Also, the thumbnails are arranged by folders. If you click on the folder in the title above the thumbnails, it will open an explorer window for that folder. Pretty handy.

You must of missed the option to tell it what to import when you first installed it. You can tell it not to search your entire drive.

After that, just go it the import option, and select only the folders you want. You can also remove any you don't want.

Man, I really stink at taking pictures, lol

I took the bold step of converting my RAW files to DNG because A) It's a standardized, open format and B) The DNG files are smaller than my CRW files.

I can't believe after all the user input, Picasa 2 doesnt' support DNG. Maybe the next version will...

No. Neither option appealed to me and I figured I could kill the scan and then point it at the folders I want. I do not appear to be able to kill the scan.

It is an open format but it isn't a standard. Adobe simply told the world it exists. Canon isn't planning on supporting it.

I believe picasa 2 doesn't support 16 bit .psd files.

Ah. Tell it to remove all the folders from its scans.
