I am keeping this lens for sure. Under certain very demanding AF situations the lens front focuses at 24mm and f2.8. It is still extremely sharp, but just a little in front of where I focus.

The focus here is on the black cable tie, and as you can see the fence is actually in focus about 2-3 inches in front. The shot was taken from about a metre away from the point of focus. So I suppose this is a reasonable amount of front focus. However when I turn to photographing real situations (ie people), the lens is spot on.

The focus point (center point) is on the eye. I think this is fantastic (not the photo, but the lense perfomance). Heres another

Focus is on the left eye (although both are very sharp).

And here the focus is on the fingers (midway between webbing and tip, I think). However the shot below shows how the large diameter of the front element of the lense, blocks the onboard flash (I can live with it).

And one more demanding AF test shot

Here the approx focus point is shown. Good performance I think.
All in all I love the lense, and would recomend it to anyone.

I have posted small images (I think), if anyone would like some larger size shots I would be happy to email them to you

looks very good wide open. i think for a standard zoom the bokeh is very good. it's such a nice thing to have a f2.8 24-70 for under $400, isnt it?keep the images coming...

My lens is in Japan right now for this same exact reason (picture one) but mine also had blurry one side. Should be back here in 2 weeks.

Canon is the best when it is working. Sigma is the same way now.

First picture indicates just that but the last one of the brick wall does not.
Mine was consistantly front focusing.
Did you use autofocus?

Nice shot Tao,

Hey even if the lens was a lemon (and it most certainly isn't, I love it overall, the AF is a little inconsistant in some in some very extreme, demanding situations) Anthony came through beautifully, just as you said he would.

To thoroughly scrutinise a lens to the degree that we all seem to do would take days to weeks, and Anthony's quick test of the lense I'm sure is to rule out obvious errors or quality control issues. No overall I'm rapt with Anthonys service and the lense.
And no other retailers offer this anyway, I have already recommended Anthony.

Afterall I plan on photographing people, landscapes, scenes etc not fences and various other obscure things.
Oh and all the photos above where taken with AF.

I do have one question, I haven't tried it but does the lense have the dual focus capabilities of the previous version, and is this the same as the full time manual focusing capabilities of Sigmas other HSM lenses.
Adrian

You have to flick the switch for manual then pull the focusing ring down to use manual, anyone know why they've made it that way ?

I don't think you can tell that the lens is front focusing by this shot. Having the AF actually focus on the black cable tie isn't realistic when you've got all that contrast surrounding it in the fence, brick, and poles. The AF could have picked anything around that little tie strap.

By looking at your other shots...focus seems bang on.

Ah, would love to pay Byron another visit. ;-)

Love the post processing you've done on the shot.

Do you have any links to original full size images?

I've got a EOS 300 (film) and just got the 24-70. Seems excellent so far.

However i do get what seems like front focus at 24mm. I did a focus test @24mm F:2.8. However the lighting was horrible, and it's hard to get accurate positioning of the focus point because it covers such a large area @ 24mm. Some of my other 24mm shots are blurry, but that may be camera shake.

24mm: -

70mm: -

I think the focus looks bang on.

If some of your other shots look blurry and there does not seem to be any sharpness at any depths...it's probably camera shake and not front or backfocusing.

I received my Sigma 24-70 2.8 EX DG for Christmas. I couldn't be happier with this lens. I took the following shots with my 300D/Sigma 24-70 on a 4 hour hike in South Mountain Park (Phoenix, Arizona) Saturday afternoon. It was a gorgeous day for a hike, about 70 degrees and blue skies.

24mm, f/16, 1/160, ISO 200

24mm, f/11, 1/400, ISO 200

52mm, f/16, 1/125, ISO 100

70mm, f/11, 1/200, ISO 100

36mm, f/5, 1/250, ISO 100

Ancient HoHoKam Indian petroglyphs, 45mm, f/8, 1/640, ISO 200

Yea it certainly is a tough shot, and definately not a "real life" shot (unless you are a product photographer doing a shoot on black cable ties), but it did consistantly focus in front of the black tie.

However like I say in real life shots (people, landscape etc), the lense is spot on for focus, color, contrast everything.
I love it

what filter set up are you using with your 24-70EX? do you use the cokin system or lee? the 2nd shot looks like a polarizer was used, but maybe the sky was just like that too...

in Encino CA.

They did send my lenses (24-70 and 120-300) to Japan for servicing because I complained loud enough to Sigma headquaters in Japan. I don't think Sigma can do much here but replace broken parts. My 120-300 was perfect on 1ds but somehow front focus on 1Ds MK2 at 120, 200, and 300mm. I think they are puzzled so they sent it to Japan. I don't really care if they send my lenses to the Mars as long as they come back fixed.
My lens is in Japan right now for this same exact reason (picture

weeks.
Are you saying that US Sigma lenses are sent to Japan for servicing?

there every cactus gives you a finger.

Nice pictures though, I wish my Sigma would give you the same pictures when it comes back from repairs.

I don't yet own any filters for my 24-70EX. The sky really did look that blue on Saturday looking overhead.

Great shots John. I have been thinking about getting the 24-70 as a walk around lens. Do you find that you are happy with the wide end (ie is it wide enough for you)?

PS, I used to ride the National trail all the time. I can't wait to take my new 300D out there!

Best, Bruce
