I totally disagree. Looking at all the shots I have taken with my
717 vs all the ones I have seen of the 828, the 828's shots are
noisy, grainy, out of focus, poor DOF, and purple fringed in
comparison to the 717 which suffers from none of those. It is quite
simple as the 828's tiny sensor with so many pixels is going to
suffer. That is why I cancelled my order for it and kept the 717. I
never have to edit my 717 shots, they come out crisp and free of
consderable noise and PF. Here is an example of a recent photo. I
made one B&W, that is it. Just my opinion though, I feel the
opposite. I respect yours as well. =)

You are entited to your opinion but having used 505/707/717/828's.. the 717 is an excellent camera but it doesn't compare to the 828 in 90% of the comparable features and the pics are overall noticeably improved over the 717, especially when shooting at ISO 64/100 at 8MP and the four color filter is vastly superior in producing accurate color. There is some noise above ISO 200, but just stay away from the higher ISO's or use Noise Ninja or some other editing software to fix that. Not a biggy unless all your shooting is going to be available light at sunrise/sunset.
I also shoot Canon 1D's and their 10D20Ds professionally and the Sony outshoots them in accurate flesh tones, hands down without any editing. Infact, when I shoot a session, I'll shoot a few with the 828 as backup because I love the color palette so much without having to do a bunch of editing in Photoshop CS to duplicate in the Canons what I love about the 828 straight off the card. And the Sony 828 is sharper than the Canons straight off the card. This is great if you need shots of high quality and aren't going to need/can do a bunch of editing with them.
I have clients that want the shots immediately after the shoot for uploading to a publisher for a deadline and I've used the Sony and it does great, again, if used within it's abilities. I can't do that with the F717. There is some fall off of the image quality at 5MP vs. 8MP.
I've never had a customer come back and say the pic was poor quality. It depends on what use the pic is going to be for, of course, but for about 75% of my work, I could get away with the Sony quality. The problem is, when I'm charging them my fees, it's hard to justify shooting with a camera the client could buy at Comp USA.
So then, I bring out the big guns..the Canons. But the Sony 828 is way out there. Yes, Purple Fringe can be a problem at times. But there are several solutions to that problem out there if you encounter it in the 5% of the pics where it will crop up.
Actually, all digital cameras have it to some extent. Even the 717 if you insist on shooting subjects with large amounts of specular highlights. I rarely find it a problem as I use polarizers in those situations and that will go a long ways to reducing PF and increases contrast and saturation. it's a minor thing, really. Too much is made of it..IMO. but some people obsess about it and it gets to be a bit funny.
So if I had a 717 and was going to buy an 828, I'd jump at it if the prices were good to buy and sell. IMO, the 828 is just a step below a Canon 10D using L lenses. It's not a step back of the F717. Sure, Sony will come up with a better camera in the future. But the 828 is the better camera of the 2 and you'll love it. trust me.
