D2x: no mirror lockup, slower flash sync...any guesses why?

I have been looking at the D2X, more today as Nikon has actually announced a ship date. If I understand correctly, it will only sync the flash to 1/250, compared to the D70's 1/500, and still no mirror lockup ?!?!

Seriously, if the D2X could meet or beat the D70's flash sync, and had mirror lockup, I think I'd be sold, but without these features, I'm not so sure about spending $5000.

Any ideas about why Nikon would leave out these features, which (correct me if I'm wrong) are about the most common requests for a new body outside of larger dynamic range?

Anybody using a D70 as their primary body thinking of buying a D2X? Why or why not?

I'm not sure, but I think sync has to do with a type of sensor.

You apparently forgot one of your questions:
Any ideas about why Nikon would leave out these features, which
(correct me if I'm wrong) are about the most common requests for a
new body outside of larger dynamic range?
If he is right and that the sync mode has to do with the type of sensor, then that would be why this camera can't do 1/500th.

Maybe this camera is directed at a market that doesn't need this.

Example? This camera has no built-in flash. Why? I guess they just expect you to buy a real one.

It seems like they optimized the D2X for speed - hence you wouldn't use mirror lockup if you're shooting at 8 fps.

don't know about the flax sync speed. maybe like the other person said, going to a CMOS sensor means they can't do 1/500 any more like the CCD on the D70.

also, i'm sure Nikon does market research as to what features people want in their cameras. a few loud complainers on an internet forum does not mean that the entire world wants Mirror lockup.

just my thoughts.

The D2x is aimed at pro sports shooters. They have no need for mirror lockup. They have no need for 1/500 flash sync (nor does anyone else, in 99.999999% of all situations). If you feel that you need these features, then the D2X is not the camera for you, nor is it indended to be.

Are you sure it doesn't have mirror lockup? I keep hearing that it's in the exact same body as the d2h, and my d2h has mirror lockup.

The D2X can have an ISO of 100. A full stop lower than the D70 @ ISO 200. So, while the D70 flash sync = 1/500 sec @ ISO 200, the D2X has a flash sync of 1/250 sec @ ISO 100 (under the same exposure conditions). Therefore, there is NO difference.

Both flash sync are high enough to stop motion, so it really doesn't matter much at all.

I guess you are wrong. Sync speed has nothing to do with the ISO. It's flash guide number has something to do with the ISO.

I guess D1X has 1/500 sync speed and ISO 125.. You will get 1/500 speed at all ISO... When ISO goes up you will get more distance because the sensitivity goes up..

Nope.

Let's assume were are out taking shots and have the D70 set at ISO 200, and the D2X at ISO 100. You are using flash, and the meter is reading 1/500 sec on the D70, while the D2X will read 1/250 sec (because of the lower ISO). It is the same!!

It does have mirror lockup...(wondering why you think otherwise...did you read any offical information that says otherwise?)

As for sync speed, I think frame speed was its goal. (not that the quoted sync speed for this unit is unusable....) I will be useing this camera for wildlife and landscape photography.....speed for wildlife, and 12MP detail for landscapes....what an awesome tool....and it still has the 1.5x mag factor with lenses....which suits me fine for wildlife reach.

I think the real reason people want 1/500 sync flash is to catch faster action shots or do things handheld with 70-300 lenses on dSLR's. just my two cents.

If that's true why any camera can do that at higher ISO?

I've started using those old manual flashes where i had to find the distance of the object from the camera and divide that number by aperture to match the guide number.

Do you know that if the only light source is the flash, then you can shoot any shutter speed below the max sync speed and get the same exposure?
Say my flash guide number is 15M and the my subject is 3 meters away,

the aperture should be set at f/5 and you can shoot any shutter speed below 250 and you will get exactly same exposure. You will get it if you know how to use 100% manual flash.

Why Canon stopped 1/500 after 1D? Is it a bad thing? It doesn't stop you shooting at 1/250.

CCD is the only sensor that supports electronic shutter I guess. that's why it was there in those cameras.... Not sure it can be achieved on CMOS..
Let's assume were are out taking shots and have the D70 set at ISO
200, and the D2X at ISO 100. You are using flash, and the meter is

I have been looking at the D2X, more today as Nikon has actually
announced a ship date. If I understand correctly, it will only sync
the flash to 1/250, compared to the D70's 1/500, and still no
mirror lockup
?!?!

Seriously, if the D2X could meet or beat the D70's flash sync, and
had mirror lockup, I think I'd be sold, but without these features,
I'm not so sure about spending $5000.

Any ideas about why Nikon would leave out these features, which
(correct me if I'm wrong) are about the most common requests for a
new body outside of larger dynamic range?

Anybody using a D70 as their primary body thinking of buying a D2X?
Why or why not?
