Get in line (to the clinic that is) but you will not get your camera by Monday if you live in USA. Nikon is shitting on us. Everybody in the world already have their D1x but we will have to wait 2 more weeks or longer to get ours. And we are like suckers will wait. I think I am going to join you
in the line.

Gentilemen,

I have been following the D1x cases play by play. I want one so bad I can taste it. I have been shooting film for a number of years professionally. I am ready to shoot digitally. I wish things where as in storybooks, you get the camera of your dreams on the day it was promised, but unforturanally (sp) this is the real world. I can only hope that the camera is in before my peak season is over in order to benifet from the experience.

best regards....
mike.... b...... come on d1x ....

Epperson Photo emailed me that their Nikon source in California is estimating that shipments will begin the middle of next week. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this is correct.

I'm sorry guys,

but after being led a merry dance for the last few weeks of false and broken promises, presumably all part of the hype desired to get everyone salivating for a camera before it arrives in numbers, I have reached my conclusion.

Believe it when you see it :(

Unfortunately, not so Eugene - after months of being told end of April it was put back and back and back. I was finally told it would be DEFINITELY sometime during the last week, hopefully towards the middle of the week, but certainly no later than Saturday.

Yesterday I was told that Nikon UK were not sending out the cameras that they have until they had all been given the firmware upgrade - about another two weeks. The reason why they were waiting was to be fair to all dealers - sod the dealers, what about the folk who are paying for the cameras. I've been on a waiting list since the beginning of March.

The fairest thing that Nikon could have done is release the cameras in batches once the firmware had been upgraded so that their dealers received say two cameras at a time. Thus folk on their lists would receive them and at least put the cameras to work.

I'm convinced the firmware upgrade is not the reason for the delay - Nikon must have known about this a while ago to have a fix available...

Nikon have the stock in the UK, they are just not releasing it. Politics.

I think this raises an important question over the D1x firmware upgradeability - we SHOULD be able to download firmware upgrades over the net and do the upgrades ourselves.

Jeurgen Specht couldn't get an upgrade at the service centre in Japan because it was deemed unnecessary!

This whole fiasco is doing Nikon the company no good IMHO. This is not the honorable or professional way to go about treating your customers.

Most if not all of the "broken promises" have been from the dealers.
I have been talking to Nikon direct for some time now. They have
been telling me sometime in June for a while now. I am not about to
try to stick up for Nikon but....
They are the only pro camera company that has come through with
a "pro digital camera", the D1, the way we whated it.
Sure it had its problems but for a first crack at it I think they did well.
Now their second attempt is a whole lot better, they now have two
pro models out. These very complex cameras must be a huge headache
to mass produce and get them out on time. I for one will be happy
to get my D1X sometime in June as they told me. Imagine if there
was no D1 or D1X. With all of my Nikon equipment I would be forced
to use an S1 or very expensive Kodak. Thanks Nikon for coming through
with not one but two great pro digital products. Years ago I went with
Nikon because they are pro level and their produces reflected that.
I can say they are still on top for true pro equipment and I'm glad they
are, because my D1X will be the best pro digital produce out there for
a year or so, for me 3-4 years and it fits all of my equipment....wow.....
So Nikon, thankyou and keep up the good work, you sure make my
job easier with reliable pro level equipment. If keeping that equipment
at the top of pro level means delays in shipping, so be it.
What ever it takes.....just keep them coming.

A lot of the promises of delivery actually came from Nikon UK customer support Jus, not the dealers. In fact it was sombody higher up in the Nikon UK heirarchy who told me that they would release the 2nd batch to the dealers last week.

However, to be fair to Nikon UK, this last promise of delivery came before they were aware of the microdrive problem.

One of the things that bugs me the most about this fiasco is that Nikon was saying that the X and H models would be firmware upgradable from the net, guess they made that one up too! Maybe this is their way of trying to help Canon get into the digital pro market, drag their feet till Canon gets theirs ready to release!

The last promise you speak of is about the same date I was finally given
about two weeks ago. Before that they were not giving dates. They
do have the shipped units in most countries waiting for the final OK from
Japan. They would have had them in our hands as promised but a last
minute microdrive problem shows up. Most "non pro" companies would
have shipped and then said "it's not our problem, call IBM".
But Nikon took it upon themselves to fix the problem because they are
known as a professionals camera company. They would never ship a
product of that standard with a known problem. Hey guys and girls, thats
what we pay for. I'm glad they are ( at least trying ) to get it right the
first time. I think if I had of received the unit WITH the problem I would
have been more upset then having a slight delay. We need to stop
blaming and bashing Nikon, after all they are the only company coming
through with a pro digital unit ( or two ) at a reasonable cost.
Now if they delay the shipping to dealers with no reason, then start
bashing. But if one of you out there was the worlds leading photographer
and all of your clients world wide needed the same 36"x48" print that
consisted of a very difficult process, AT THE SAME TIME. You would delay if
necessary to make sure your clients get the perfect print. I really don't
think you would purposely mess with your clients shipping date unless
there was very good reason.
My first important shoot dates start in July for the D1X, and I have a feeling
that I will be shooting them with the D1X. I lined them up starting in
July because I was told a long time ago that June sometime is when I
would probably get the D1X. Last minute delays are very common so I'm
glad I planned on them happening.

Hello Jus

I am in agreement with you regarding Nikon, better to receive a camera that if fully finished. However I was told by my dealer who reports just what Nikon tells him that the camara's would be available by the end of May.

Perhaps he was over enthusastic about the news of the impending arrival but that's what he claims was told him. It should however be built in to all delivery dates a time buffer for problems cropping up as they mostly always do with complicated computer equipment.

If the micro drive compatability problem had not arisen just like it did, I do think we would have received our D1xs a month ago just like the Europeans did. And my dealer's promised delivery date would have been on target.

However I harbour no grudge at all and will be very ha ha happy when my camera arrives this very coming week June 18to 22 as now promised by the Nikon rep.

By the way my dealer was told to put in a big order(20) for the Nikon 995 and they would trickle in gradually over the summer and fall. Well last Thursday a big box arrived at his shop directly from Nikon and what do you know, all of the 995 cameras were in that big box. Was he ever surprised!

Just got an email from my photo dealer in Oklahoma who said that the president of their company was at the US Open on Thursday as an invited guest of the head of sales for Nikon. He asked about the D1X and was told that they (the dealer) would receive their first shipment this coming week (week of the 18th). He also said not to expect more than 2-3 cameras in each shipment. I don't know exactly what this means in terms of "batches" of cameras being shipped at once, or the frequency of the shipments, but that is the message I received.

Waiting!

Hi Jus,

noone here is bashing Nikon on the quality of the D1 or D1x. What I am disatisfied with is the quality and consistency of communication with their dealers and their end customers.

One dealer told me that this confusion is common prior to the release of a new digicam and partly intentional to generate hype and interest.

If this is true then it certainly works considering the amount of D1x traffic on these forums...

Cheers

Interesting. That's where mine is coming from too.

I hope that 2-3 camera estimate was incredibly conservative.

Hello Ron and all.
Its a good news bad news thing.

Good news they are shipping already, the dealer I am using has already received their first unit last Thrusday.
The bad news unless you are NPS you will be waiting a while.

I strongly believe that the units will continue to trickle. Nikon is having to open every box, update the firmware then repack and reship. All being done in the Torrance center as it is in CA where the first batch container was shipped. Nikon never really shipped D1's in mass anyway. Remember they did this same thing with the D1 trickled them out to PJ's.

Nikon wants the D1x to be ther professional choice this time and so far they are making the professionals happy and letting the rest wait.

The rest BYW are the ones who really debugged the D1 for them and Capture for that matter. I hope the Pro's have the time to do this for them. Considering most of the true pro's are still shooting film it will be interesting learning curve.

Hello all

I made a bet with my dealer, if it doesn't arrive this week as he has promised I get it for free. If it does arrive like promised I'll give him some prints of his choice worth equivelent value.

Let's just see what happens, it should be fun.
