I ordered a Canon G1 today and then went to look at the Sony DSC-S75. Damn. I'm not sure if I made the right choice. I'm making a transition to digital from film and don't know what I'm doing. I'm an amateur who enjoys top quality photos. Both cameras seem really good. I like the design and feel of the Sony quite a bit more than the Canon. Whereas the canon feels like a rough tank, the sony feels like a sophisticated tool. Besides the feeling, I like the smaller size of the sony too and the grip. BUT I also like the swivel lcd on the canon and know that would be very useful. What are the advantages/disadvantages with these two cameras? Has anybody used both?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

i also thought g1 was the best....
swivel lcd
iso50
c flash 1 and 2
batt type
f range 2-2.5
scene modes
low light focus assist
ani-reflective coating on lcd
stitch assist
but tried 2 at different shops - terrible focus problems....

set up cameras, prefocussed on shutter button - 70% focussed poorly (too far and too close !!!!). Also noisy pics without flash - totally put me off the g1.

Currently now looking at s75 and fuji 6900

thanks
carl.

Some guy posted G1 pictures of his trip to india:

http://www.bartvo.com/India/index.htm

While the subject matter is interesting, the actual camera output sucks, don't you think? None of the pictures look exposed properly. Everything looks kind of blurry (focus problems?). Even though the pictures are sized really small, bad chromatic aberration is visible on sevaral. Pastel colors look funny.

I don't know what people see in the G1, but I for one don't like it. Stick with Sony S75 if that's your other top choice. Check out Nikon 880, also a good camera.

Pete,

I really doesn't matter. I wrestled (maybe still am) with the same choice and also the 990. I bought the s75. The bottom line is that all three take nice pictures, but all three have pros and cons. I really think you need to just get one and work with it to figure out digital photography (along with a printer and an editing program). Then when it doesn't meet your needs anymore, upgrade.

Again, all three produce nice cleanish pictures. All might need some editing to produce the image you imagined. Anyone who is telling you that any of the above is the rate limiting factor (as opposed to the photographer) is blowing smoke up your arse.

If you need reassurance that the G1 is capable, look at Pekka Saarinen's gallery. They are edited and don't look like that right out of the camera, but the camera didn't keep those images from being made. He had a vision and knew how to get it with the equipment at his disposal.

Good luck.

I owned both the G1 and the S75. I kept the S75 and returned the G1. It's as simple as that. If you have LOTS of time to fiddle with the G1 and process in Photoshop it can take some very nice pictures. If you want a camera that will take good shots quickly and accurately the S75 is better. The G1 does have the neat swivel screen and I miss that a bit. It also has 50 ISO. However it is awkward to hold (especailly with the swivel screen, the built in flash is simply unusable (awful skin tones),focus is tricky and color never quite seemed right to me. I like the Sony's color much better, the flash is way better, it's quicker, easier to use but still has a lot of manual options. I just intuitively like it a lot better.

Pete:

If it's any consolation for you, I have both the Sony S75 and a G1. The last couple of days I took my G1 to our soccer tryouts to take some pictures of the kids. It was bright sunshine most of the time and the LCD on the G1 worked great. I was able to use it with no problems in very bright conditions.

The S75 has a good LCD, but not nearly as good as the G1. By the way, the pictures turned out pretty good to.

Don't be too disappointed with your selection. I think the G1 takes very good pics.

Please do not be disapointed untill you get it and try it. I am waiting on the Minolta but if i bought a camera today it would be the G1. I like the S75 but the over saturated reds finally turned me off in a big way. The S85 looks like they have toned the reds down and this alone to me, would be worth the extra $100. Enjoy your G1 and i bet you will enjoy. Check out these gallaries and look how great these pics look with the G1.

Be sure to post us lots of great pics and let us know how you are enjoying the camera, when you get it in.

No, don't look at Pekka's gallery, look at pictures that regular photographers take with the G1 right out of the camera. Like the link I posted in my previous post. Those pictures look terrible. Bad exposure, funny looking colors, massively huge CA purple fringes, blurry. There's nothing positive to say about them at all. I would definitely buy an S75 over the G1. And I'm not saying this to defend my camera choice. I decided not to buy an S75 myself, but it's a way better camera than the G1.

Question for ya: Have you ever go on a vacation with a digicam??

You don't have the luxury of trial and error to take good shots. With any digicam, you'd only have time to fiddle with a few settings and take the shot to save memory and battery, not to mention everybody is hushing you along, late for bus pickups, sweaty, tired and what not. It almost becomes strictly a point-n-shoot camera. There lies the G1's weakness, but saying its output sucks is missing the ball. In this gallery, I'd say the photographer is rushed.

Other than Pekka's, I find this good looking G1 gallery:
http://jacklevy.net/gallery/main/125-2535_IMG.html

If you like point-n-shoot, the S75 is better, but also take into account that one is older than the other. Until you take the S75 on the road and be in those situations then you'll know its real strengths and weaknesses.

I think you missed my point. It wasn't that all G1 photos will look like Pekka's. I was saying that the G1 has the POTENTIAL to produce photos the quality of Pekka's. He just knows what hoops to jump through to get that final result. Any camera is only as strong as the brain holding it. Some take more coaxing than others and some suck so bad that they'll always suck. The G1 deffinately is not in the latter category.

Thanks everybody. I decided to keep the G1 when it arrives tomorrow. However, I'm a little concerned about the fact that it needs canon software to connect to a computer. When I used the DSC-S75 on my mac powerbook G4, it was immediately recognised and mounted on my desktop like an external hard drive. I could then just drag the photos over to the desktop which was really nice. the Canon doesn't allow that and I hate being a mac owner waiting for a company to update its drivers....it's so slow. Further, if they don't provide good software, you have compatibility issues etc. I'm also a little concerned about canon providing native macos x drivers -will they and, if so, when?

So I'm back to square one a little and need to sleep on it. Unfortunately, the company I bought from charges a 10% restocking fee if the box has been opened so I'd like to make up my mind without using the camera, based on everybody's experience here.

Thanks

Darius

I hope you can return the G1, because you should have went with the Sony. When you are buying a digital camera, one thing that's very important is the battery life, because these things run on electricity. With the G1, you will have to spend alot of money in the long run buying alkaline batteries. Sure the rechargable NiMH batteries will work as well, but still the battery life is no where close to the Infolithium battery that the sony gives you. It will last up to 3 hrs. Also there are features like burst 2 shots with the S75. If you have the money, why not get the S85, 4 Mega pixs!!! Hope this helps!

I see people posting pictures with Sony or Nikon cameras and they say "this is my first digitcal camera, look at my picture" and the pictures look pretty good.

Then I look at that G1 album and all the pictures look like crap. My only conclusion can be that the G1 sucks unless you want to spend zillions of hours in front of Photoshop touching up your photos. Kudos to Pekka for figuring out how to make his high quality images form the G1 (although you only see them after they have been resized to 1024 x 768 which erases many flaws). But from what I've seen of regular photos taken by regular people, the G1 isn't a camera I'd buy.

Here's another guy's G1 album I found on Zing. (Better look quick, Zing is shutting down at the beginning of July.)

http://www.zing.com/album/pictures.html?id=4293232335

The very first picture in this album shows the absolute WORST purple fringing I've ever seen in a digital camera photo. The whole landscape has turned a bizzaro shade of purple.

Yes, I've complained about the purple fringes on some Sony S75 photos, but the S75 has never produced the nightmare of CA as shown in this G1 picture.

This is the link to the picture I'm talking about:

What???? The G1 uses a BP511 LITHIUM-ION battery. It's one of the best performing batteries in the market.

Please know what you are talking about before you go posting bogus information.

I also posted another gallery in another message showing more really BAD G1 pictures. With the capability of taking such bad pictures, why by the thing?

Here´s my website full of G1 pictures - not really all of them being horrible :-)).

I love the G1 results, and purple fringing is not an issue really!
