Hi guys & ladies,

I am new to this forum and have just bought a D70. I had an F65 before this and purchased an SB80-DX as a 'lifetime' investment. How wrong I was !!

Anyway, I am going to New York for a week in March and was hoping to pick up an SB800 and an 85mm f1.8 lens also while I was over.

Where is the cheapest shop to purchase these items from in New York? I will have to buy them directly from the store as I cannot get them delivered to Ireland as I will have to pay an extra 21% duty on them. I would be very grateful for any help.

Thanks in advance,

Michael.

Hi Michael

B&H Photo Video, or Adorama are your best bet. check their websites for directions and pricing:

http://www.adorama.com
http://www.bhphotovideo.com

I would also check the opening times, as they have some strange opening times, also B&H are the largest but it is mayhem in that place, so be warned.

Cheers

Jason

Be careful with some of those hole-in-the wall places will rip you off. go with a reputable company.

I'm also going to New York im march and want to buy a lot of lenses etc. Is it the same price in the shop then what I find on their internet site?
Are there some kind of local tax or extra for buying directly in the shop?
Is the NIKON rebate only for US citizens?

...B&H, Adorama and 17th St. Photo in Manhattan, and, if you can get to Greenbrook, NJ, Beach Camera. Beach is, in fact, almost always cheaper than the other three for cameras and lenses (they do their best to ensure this), but usually stocks much fewer accessories, and these are not as aggressively priced.

Incidentally, I know many people do not like to pay for expensive items with cash, but I can tell you from personal experience that no matter how good the prices are at the places I mentioned, they can get better if you are willing to pay in cash.

I live in NJ and I'm local to all of these shops, and can vouch for each of them.

Also, if you ever make it down to Levittown PA, Allen's Camera is a great pro shop there- excellent service, great prices. And they are open on Saturday when the other four shops I mentioned are all closed.

Have fun in NY!

Kind Regards,
Brian

All are good AND honest in my opinion. Two on Long Island to STAY AWAY from:
Berger Bros. in Amityville and Syosset. They often sell at list price or ABOVE.

Cameta Camera in Amityville. Their return policy ummm... leaves a bit to be desired!

I buy all my equipment at B&H photo. Adorama and willoughbys are also ok to buy from. stay away from the stores that sell you luggage, rugs and souvenirs.

B&H photo also has the best candy for it's cutomers while you wait. LOL

I've been in and bought at B&H, Adorama, 17th St. and J&R. They're all going to be close in price but check ahead if possible to see if they have what you want in stock. As already noted, you'll have to pay sales tax of 8%. It's less than 21% but there's also the trade-off hassle of no practical way of doing a return and the question about getting Nikon warranty service in Europe on equipment you bought in the US.

If nothing else, be sure to bring your camera so that you can test the equipment before leaving. That will minimize the risk you're taking. For that reason, you might want to consider 17th St. over the other three just because it's retail store tends to be quieter and less hectic. It's kind of hard to find (on the third or fourth floor, not at street level) but the guys there are friendly and low-key. They do much more of their business by mail-order than by retail. B&H is the mecca of camera equipment, but it's often packed with customers.

Pay heed to the advice about checking store hours, especially for B&H and Adorama. They're run by Hasidic Jews who close early on Fridays and Jewish holidays, etc. Good luck.

just a note here.... they are closed on saturday as well.....

seriously though, go to b&h if only to experience the way that they handle their stock.... everything that is purchased in the store is transported via an intricate network of conveyor belts and elevators... the customer never holds the product (except for demos) until After they pay for it...
if you want a less hectic experience, then yes, 17th st will do the trick....

and you'll find they have free pretzels and soda too!
:-)

For a less crowded shopping experience at B&H, go on a weekday in the morning soon after they open. Its usually not crowded then at all.

Are there some kind of local tax or extra for buying directly in
the shop?
NYC sales tax is currently 8.625%. This is not VAT and non-US resident cannot recoup it. If you have a shipping address outside NY State, you may be able to avoid it. Otherwise, only those with specific exemptions can get around paying it.
Is the NIKON rebate only for US citizens?
It is, as are almost all so-called "manufacturer's" rebates. The rebate is offered by Nikon USA, not the parent company, so they're motivated to keep it in the USA. Nikon USA contracts with a third-party rebate fulfillment house which handles the paperwork and cuts and mails the checks. Because of US law, sending large amounts of US money out of the country can be a hassle, so the fulfillment houses don't want to handle non-US business either.

None, of this is the retailer's rules, BTW.

Thanks Henry!

The reason the rebates only apply to US residents (not citizens) is because the market is different here. In less price sensitive markets there is simply little need for rebates, so Nikon sees no need in giving away an extra $100.

If you're going to Adorama - ask for Ephraim - he's the one who sold me my D70 and is a good guy. But be prepared to stick around for a while - he likes to chat!

The reason is that it's Nikon USA's money and they don't see the ROI in sending it overseas. Nikon USA participates in about as many rebate programs as any of their competitors. The notion the US market is less price sensitive is simly wrong as is the idea that "Nikon sees no need in giving away an extra $100."
