I want to get a good digital camera because we are expecting a new kid in the family. I was thinking Sony P150. What do u guys recommend? I'm relatively new to digital world. I had a Canon S100 2.1 Mp and it worked fine for me but now I want more.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Size, photo quality matters for me.

May be Canon S70. It is small in size, a little easy to carry.

Michael:

For comparable grade camera, the image quality of Canon cameras is reputed to be slightly better than Sony's. However the autofocus speed, the low light autofocus capability and the shutter lag of Sony digicams are vastly superior to Canon's. Therefore, as your kid grows more active you will probably be better off with a Sony. After all, getting the photo you want, even if the image is slightly less quality, is better than getting no acceptable image at all. If most of your prints are 4 x 6's you probably won't even see the difference.

the sony p150 is NOT in the league of the g6. put another way, "the G6 is a prince, out of the p150's star". (AII SII, Hamlet!).

your choice is between the g6 and the sony v3 (and now the olympus 7070). the g6 beats the v3 in all aspects, save in focusing speed and accuracy and LCD contrast. differences in usb speed and weight won't make or break a man, or woman for that matter.

I think that the P150 (as well as its recently announced successor P200) would likely be a good choice if you don't mind the proprietary MemoryStick. If you want 7 MP, but still a compact body comparable to your S100, it is in fact the only choice currently, because the S70 is a whole lot bigger, not to mention the G6.

If you have a little more time you might want to wait for the expected successor of the S500 or whatever camera Canon will release to finally compete with the P150/P200. I just can't imagine Canon leaving that market unattended any longer.

Hopefully the hypothetical S700 or SD700, other than featuring the Digic II processor and 7 MP sensor, will also add a real variable aperture with multiple settings and advanced manual controls (would be a first, or rather an "at last" for the Ixus/Elph series) and address the purple fringing problem. A smaller sister with these same improvements but a lower resolution like 5 MP would also be appreciated as not everyone needs 7 MP.

I like the look of the S70, but its quite a bit bigger than the P150 (soon P200) - I got a P150 for my partner and having used it a bit, although the image resolution is fantastic (S70 similar - pros and cons with each) in some other respects the P150 is a bit disappointing. Its very much point'n'shoot whereas the S70 offers a bit more control if you want it. Also I don't find it particularly responsive, despite the reviews rating it better than the Canon in this regard.

But the S70 was too big and heavy (!) for what my partner needs, the only alternative really, with lots of pixels (another requirement), was the Fuji E550.

G6 and V3 are obviously in a different league, but also in a different niche - not camparable with the S70 or P150/200 at all.

Michael:

What are your specific needs? Better stated, what is more important to you, performance or photo quality.

From personal experience, I will never buy another digital camera without a hotshoe. I currently own a G6 with a 420(EX) (external flash). Bouncing the flash with an external with children serves two purposes: 1) Photo quality is substantially better., ie. more natural lighting, less harsh, no red eye, great colors; 2) You are not shooting the flash directly in the child's face which is very annoying to a child.

With that said, if you want a hotshoe, your choices should be G6 or V3. I have no experience with the V3, but I love my G6 and wouldn't replace it with any other camera at this time. If you don't want a hotshoe, then you are wide open to many, many cams, both Sony and Canon. Sony's focus speed, especially in low light is superfast. I have used the W1 and was astounded at the speed. However, I did not think the photos could touch my old Canon S30. Go to the store and see which feels best. Good luck with the camera, but more importantly, good luck with the baby.

Let me state that I own a Pana FX-7. In case you don't know, some reveiwers and users think its the most detailed optics pocket camera.

I don't think the P150 will disappoint you. And its one of the best pocket camera available on the market. Knowing you're happy with your S100, the P150 can have no obvious things that don't exceed the existing quality or speed.

Since you are askinga Sony in the Canon forum, you will not be truly expecting simple praises of the P150. And in fact all machines in these miniaturised categlory are far from excellent. They are good, having various strengthes and weeknesses. But the present models from the major brands like Canon or Sony can't possibly let you down.

Here people tend to suggest you the bigger Canons. They are heavier and bulkier. But none, stress NONE, are good P&S cameras. The slow focus and night-blinded auto focus are just teasing at today's standard, or the Sony standard. I am not saying they can't take good pictures though. They produce excellent pictures. But what good is it to have all those missed oppurtuneties with a P&S?

Canon has a popular model that is even smaller than yoru S100 and P150. That's the SD300. Check this out. Its a very well accepted camera. And its the very few Canon that is recommended for P&S with children pics since its focus is much much better than all Canon digicam line up. Its 2" LCD is also a good thing to look at when framing.

But I will suggest you to also check the S10 and S20. They are better in terms of image sharpness and even more poirtable than the SD300!

Sony is about to release a 2" LCD version of P150. Its called P200. You may wish to wait for this new comer if you have your mind fixed at the P150.

I do not recommend you to check the FX-7, which I own. Its a great slim camera, with IS feature. But that is not the best tool to freeze actions of hyper active kids. IS will make your exposure time longer than high ISO under dim light. That means motion blurr is more vulnberable.

Pentax has a slim 5x camera and Ricoh has 4/5 MP slim cameras that provide 28mm eqv wide angles. I do not recommend them unless you have specific requirements on zoom range and wide angles. I don't talk about them because I do not have a solution or detail enough testing with them as to how to make them perform the best P&S job. You make want to try your luck with their talk forums here.

Lastly, Casio Z50/55 are also great choices. I have some nice impressions with them. But I have personal reservations of teh Casio made reliability and afetr sales service over here at the pacific rim. Though I do not recmmmend them, my reasons shouldn't be your concern.

I would strongly advice you not to go too big with the P&S camera. Portability is very important for such snap cams. May be when your kids grow up, you should upgrade to better camers and bigger lense. At their infant and kid stage, you have a lot more other things to take care of when going out. Just keep the camera small and handy, and 99% available to capture all the nice moments.

I've used P150 too. Its response time is a lot faster than Canon's, I don't know why you didn't notice it. And P150 actually offers slightly more manual control than its competitors, in this case, SD200/300 in my opinion. I don't think P150's competes directly against S70...although a lot of people like to group cameras in terms of their megapixel size.

I would suggest take a look at the Canon S410 and Canon SD300. Both are 4mpix digital cameras . The Canon S410 uses the CF memory cards and the SD300 uses the SD memory cards.

come on guys........you act like owning a sony is a bad thing.

Here are some samples. I'm a total amateur.........

http://www.ianz28.smugmug.com/

I'm very happy with the results from the P150. I've had it a month and most the pictures turn out great!

I had some 8x10's printed and I was floored with the detail and quality. Color reproduction is excellent. The pictures from the P150 blow away my old canon.

There is no perfect point and shoot and it's all about trade offs.

P150 - You lose a little flash (after-market one is available) and get a little camera shake with night shots in auto mode (switch to M mode and set the shutter to 1/50 second - it's not that hard).
  • OR -
Get a much lower MP count and greater CA/PF from the lens. Lose most manual control and the speed is nothing compaired to the sony's.....but, then you can save a few bucks on memory costs and own a canon.
