Didn't take my tripod as I thought it would be a waste of time in the crowds. 4 sec exposure was achieved with camera sitting on wall with 'can-of-beer-method' of supporting lens :-)

Beer was put to much better use shortly after this!

Agree with previous poster: Best fireworks shot I've ever seen bar none.

It is rare indeed that you can fill the entire frame with streaks of light in a single fireworks display.

What was I thinking when I spent well over $1000 on my Gitzo plus A/S B1 when all I really needed was a can of Watney's Red Barrel.

Biggest worry was dropping the beer in the Thames river as I got jostled by the crowd - or the camera too I suppose! ;-)

It was a great firework display. £1million apparently.

John

have to agree, this is one of the best fireworks shots I've seen. Amazing you managed 4 sec without a tripod, too!

Far too noisy John - I see lots of brightly coloured streaks - typical of the D2H :-)

Stunning shot !

I've never used the 'can-of-beer-method' ... but it seems to be a great support - also for a camera ;-)

Hopefully the London Eye was closed that evening?

Kind regards,

... you have done a fabulous job here. I watched the display on TV as the wife and I saw the New Year in with a bottle of champagne. We thought it was one of the most impressive displays we'd ever seen, and your photo does it true justice. Well done. I'm quite sure that this image has commercial potential ... pewrhaps the organisers of the London Olympic bid would be interested in it.

Key thing with fireworks is to remember they are very bright, but move, so you expose the fireworks based on ISO and aperture, and the background based on shutter time.

In this case, f19 4sec ISO 200, 17mm (25m), focus at infinity. NR on.

John
Thanks
