Sizing an image for printing in Photoshop CS

I have a question about sizing an image to standard print sizes. In Photoshop CS if I go into Image Size and size the image for an 8x10, the height and width stay in proportion so I end up with 8x12. So now I need to crop part of the picture to get the image down to 8x10. Is there way a way to visually see an 8x10 box on screen so I know how much I need to crop?

The way I am currently doing it is to crop some of the picture, then go back into image size and see what the new dimensions are, say 8x10.2. Then I crop a little more to try and get it to 8x10. This is a painful and inexact process so it would be nice if there was a way to see an 8x10 rectangle on screen that I could use to crop my picture exactly. Is there any way to do this??

You should be able to select the Crop Tool, and then up top in the settings select 8in for width, and 10 in for height. Then when you use the tool you will see the proportions and what you will be cropping.

Yes, you can select the crop tool and input the correct proportions in the with and height fields. If you have resized one of the sides to the correct dimencion, you will get the correct size and proportion.

But you should look at the resize function under the help menu. I use that to resize for printing.

Also, clear out the Resolution field. Do any resampling from the Image-> Image Size panel if you aren't happy with the dpi of your image.

Use the crop tool. At the top type in "8 in" for width and "10 in" for height (or vice versa) and then type in the resolution. For resolution I use 240 - some folks say to use 300. Both work fine for me.

Then click the little down arrow beside the crop symbol at the top and save it as a preset. Then any time you want to use the crop tool you just select the preset for the size you want.
