loose focus ring on 70-300 do

I just got a canon 70-300 do lens from BH and found the focus ring is quite loose (it can be moved up and down a little bit), while it is tight on my 17-40 L lens. Is this normal?

Hula, by moved up and down, do you mean that when the ring reaches "infinity" you can still turn the ring a bit...(same thing for the lower end) ?

If so, then don't worry that's normal. my 17-40 and 70-200IS are like this and it's totally ok !

I meant the ring can be moved along the axis of the lens about 1-2mm, giving you a feeling that it is loose.

Mine seems the same, maybe a mm of play. I don't think it's unusual, and doesn't seem "loose" in a horribly negative way. Lens seems to work ok. Serial no. on mine is 9310003xx. I'm not worried about it.
