I have a 20D. I got a 4gb CF card (Sandisk Ultra II) and it only showed a bit more space than my 2gb card. So I formatted the card with the camera and it still only showed 2gb. Any ideas on this?

It needs to be formatted as FAT32 to show more than 2GB. I thought the 20D would recognize that, but maybe it doesn't. Try formatting it in your PC using the FAT32 option and see what happens.

I did think of that but I have no way to do it right now. I download the card using the camera, not an separate reader, and it can't write the card. I did look on this forum and saw others using 4gb and not complaining, so it seems 4gb must work. But is very suprising that I can't use the camera to format it. Has anyone else seen this problem? I am still at 1.05 if that makes a difference. It is still 1.05 because it i a pain to upgrade it when you can write the card:)

The camera can read FAT32 but its format utility only supports FAT16 (Listed as FAT). You have to format the card w/a computer in either a card reader or a PCMCIA adapter in a laptop to get FAT32. Then don't ever format in the camnera or you'll be back to 2Gb again...

How about you mail it to me, and I'll format it for you.

and I'll be sure to mail it right back to you sometime....

hehe...

Seriously, card readers are cheap if you don't have one. A friends card reader would be even cheaper...

I also thought some of the 4GB cards have an 'A' / 'B' / 'BOTH' switches? Allows you to switch between (2) FAT16 2GB partitions for better words, or (1) 4GB partition.

You are a genius, ronterry!!!! I did not even read the instructions with the card, there is a switch, just as you thought. Better still it was incorrectly in the 2gb position. I moved it to 4gb and the camera correctly formatted the card for 4gb!!! It works!!!! Thanks for the help.

I was planning to get a reader but never got to it yet, I will.

I got the card at zipzoomfly, but it was $329, $199 sounds like the 2gb. Mine was Ultra II also, not Ultra III.

Both the 2 and 4GB extreme III cards are priced at the same thing, with the 2GB Ultra II priced $20 cheaper.
