During December PBASE took a flying leap off of a cliff and hasn't been brought back to life. I am looking for a new provider for my pics. I have heard smug is good but does anyone have any suggestions?

-Danny

PS If you don't know what I am talking about check out the forums (Q&A) at PBASE for an explination. I am very sad to see what happened to them and how everyone is leaving so fast. It was a great site until last month :(

I did note that this is on the home page:

"28-Dec-2004 - we are having a huge flood of visitors to PBase looking at photos of the recent tsunami which is pushing the servers to their limit. we are sorry for the inconvenience.
we expect to greatly improve our traffic capacity during January."

Is there more to it than that?

My goodness. I just read some of it. Unfortunately, that forum and whatever 'movement' might exist is being run with a mob mentality. Never a good thing. I like Smugmug, but I'd give Slug some time to work this out. He's usually on top of things. Sometimes bad periods of service happen.

Hi Ulysses -- how are you?

No offense but he doesn't really appear to be on top of it at present. I understand problems can occur from time to time, but at least having the courtesy to respond to the many queries that I understand have been sent to him (my own included) would be nice. Even a public notice addressing the specific problems would be appreciated (more than just the overload one from the end of December).

It was one thing when this was a free site (which I never understood), but now that he's collecting money for the service he has a responsibility to provide what he's promised.

I don't like Smugmug and don't really want to have to go through the hassle of moving everything, but this thumbnail problem in particular is becoming quite annoying.

I have been looking into this and I have found Fotki to be good. I do not have an account with them but am considering opening one soon.

i chose smugmug and havn't looked back. it's speedy and has a great interface, imo.

pbase didn't really appeal to me, i thought it was slow when i evaluated it. fotki, in my experiences, was one of the slowest of all that i looked at.

just my pennies...

I don’t use Pbase anymore – but do go out there occasionally just to browse other people’s work and you are right – it is having some serious issues. I also understand that when presented with a situation like this – you want SOME communication with the proprietor of the site. You want some assurances that steps are being taken to correct the problems. This is one of the reasons that I am recommending the site that I am.

PhotoShare has been a great site for me, with none of the issues that I experienced on Pbase at any point. Graeme Faulkner is the owner and designer of PhotoShare (and a user of these forums) and one of the strengths of the site is the fact that he is extremely prompt in answering e-mails that are sent. My e-mails are usually answered within a matter of hours – not days.

PhotoShare is also a “no ads” site with absolutely no ads or pop-ups guaranteed. You can password protect galleries, direct link to individual photos or entire galleries, customize the look of your gallery – even remove the PhotoShare header from you homepage. (Something that you cannot do on Pbase to my knowledge and other sites charge you to do.) I would at least recommend giving PhotoShare a look – you can get a fully functional 30 day trial account and then decide for yourself. I think that it is the best deal out there. $12 dollars a year for a 100MB account – and that also buys you 5GB of monthly bandwidth for direct linking – that is a ton of bandwidth for that price. Let me know if you have any questions.

I personally plan to hang in there a while. Admittedly I have nothing commercial at stake, so it's easy. Also, I haven't experienced the problems as very severe - nothing an occasional click of the Refresh button doesn't fix. I haven't seen a feature set I like better.

I suspect that these problems could happen to any small to medium sized site. Consider the problem - normally you have stable load from a fairly closed community posting pictures of interest mainly to a limited circle of friends, photo enthusiasts, etc. You build servers for that. Then suddenly someone posts tsunami pictures, and everyone on the planet comes to see. Unless you have fantastic scalability - crash.

If nothing else, the problem is self-correcting: the load tails off as people leave. I don't see the forums as evidence that people are leaving in droves; looks more like a limited number of loud complainers.

That is why they invented the dozens of PHP photo gallery that you can simply install on your website and in a few minutes you will be up and running.

In my opinion 4images is the best one. Unfortunately I think that for commercial purpose (is this the case for you?) cost about 100$ but it is all well spent money, I guarantee it!

it's been rather sluggish since end of november and has become increasingly unreliable - tsunami or not. it's a pity too, i liked the format and ease of use.

fwiw, considering smugmug as well

Hi Ulysses -- how are you?
Hi there, Helen! I'm doing just great. Its wonderful to see you again. :-)

No, no offense taken at all. I'm sure that as a user of pbase, you'd know more about it than I would anyway. I just hate seeing Slug get beat up. He really is a nice guy and ordinarily is attentive to the needs of those who use his service. This makes me wonder if perhaps something has happened to him personally (I read some of the forum over there, but didn't really have time to stay for very long) or with some situation in his life or business.

But I know this is all about business, and you're completely right. When you have paying clients, there is a greater responsibility to fulfill the agreement of service. I hope this resolves sometime soon. It's awful not being able to reliably share your images.

One reason about a year ago that I stopped recommending ImageStation is because they disallowed hot-linking? So you couldn't share your images in a forum like this one for dozens or hundreds of people to enjoy.

Do they still have that restriction? Or have they finally lifted it?

I would sure hate to see everyone jump ship like I see them saying in all these threads in the last couple of days. pBase is a great setup and I'm pretty certain that they are just going through some growing pains. All hosting services go through it. Yeah, it's painful at the time. Yeah, some services don't come out of it. But yeah, some come out of it and end up being better than ever.

Yeah, communication could be better, but I totally understand. I would bet a large sum of money that nobody here (except maybe Phil) could possibily imagine the kind of crud they get in email. I can imagine that after awhile, it would get old-- that it's just plain easier to keep working on the troubles rather than spending tons of time trying to think up pretty words to placate people.

I don't even have a pBase account, but I use the STF Challenge's galleries all the time. It's the best thing out there if you don't want to design your own site.

If you do want to go off on your own, do your own domain/website, you might check out PowWeb.com. I used them for a year, several years ago. I loved their package deal, but they were going through much of the junk pbase is going through right now. I left 'em, but they've hung in there and look better than ever.

Here's the deal for their $7.77 per month package (paid for a year at a time, if I recall):
