My D70 initial Report

C'mon... I had my S5000 for 4 months and my S5500 for about the
same time... I was due for it :)
4 months ?!?!?!
That's hardly any time at all!
I got my S5100 right after you got yours!
I'm going to resist the temptation, and keep working
with my 5100 for at least another 6 months, maybe a year.
I took lots of photos over xmas... hardly any of the indoor ones
turned out... they were too blurry, so that helped my decision ;)
Aaaaaah, okay, the truth comes out!
You wanted better indoor/low-light performance.
Okay, I can understand that.
The S5100 is not the best low-light shooter, but it still WORKS,
if you know how to work with it.
Did you spend enough time with your 5500 to really get to know it?
Yep, I shot around 1800 photos with it (Or more, I don't really remember what I was up to) and I knew how to use it, but it just wouldn't do anything. Indoor xmas shots at ISO 200 (as 400 is a bit too noisy for my liking) just came out blurry because I had to settle for a slower shutter speed.

Are these shots to your liking? The full size images are crystal clear, I love them!

(my first couple of shots with the camera too!)

C'mon mate, it was a deal too good to pass up :)
I want to see some indoor/low-light shots from your D70!
I also want to see some bird shots!
Get busy, mate!
The good thing about this cam is you can select AF-C (continuous auto focus which when you press the shutter half down and your subject moves, it will adjust the focus - and quickly!)

I will get some bird shots for ya mate :) Give me some time to figure this camera out though lol

( LOYAL Finepix S5100 user! )
Go see if you can try a D70 for your hummingbird shots... lets see
how long you stay loyal to fuji :)

Cheers mate.
I have no doubt, if I tried some hummingbird shots with a D70
and a good lens, I would probably never want to use my 5100 again!

( Which is WHY I am going to WAIT awhile, before getting a DSLR! )

I want to get my money's worth out of my 5100!
I'm going to sell my S5500 and try to make some money back on it... then I have to buy my lovely wife a compact little camera for her to stick in her handbag.
Hehehehe!

Cheers mate.

You know, with a subject like that you really should do her justice. It looks to me like you have your camera set to the defaults with no custom curve loaded. You should get much better out of camera results than that. Anyway, SOMEBODY has to present your subject in the best light possible, so it may as well be me ;-)

Hey smakky,

I found the Photogenetic Point & Shoot V4 very nice as an all purpose tonality curve ( http://fotogenetic.dearingfilm.com/ ). It makes the picture brighter without blowing anything. There are also good contrasty curves, much like an S curve, but depending on the shot you can end with very deep highlights and shadows, impossible to fix with PP if you wish to change the look of the picture at a later time and if you didn't shot in RAW mode.

It’s a completely different world, the
camera is heavy, bulky, with a larger lens one’s hand can get
really tired after some dozens shots.
Once you get used to it, it isn't as bad as it looks. The 70-200 VR weighs 1.5kg and because it has a nice balancepoint it is actually quite easy to use and not as tiresome as you'd expect. If you use large heavy lenses, it migth be advisable to look for ones that have or can trake a tripod collar so that you can mount it on a monopod.
For us, used with the 6X/10X
zoom Fuji cameras lens, the kit lens can also be very disappointing
talking about reach. The kit lens is an 18~70mm lens that can be
translated to 27~105mm in 35mm numbers, not really fantastic, an
extra glass is a must. There is a Sigma 28~200mm and a 28~300mm
glass that I want to give a look one of these days.
Also look at a fast prime. I've got a 50mm f1.4 and when you combine that with ISO 1600 you'd be amazed in what light you can shoot well. The 1.8 is much cheaper btw.
I found to be much
more difficult to shoot a picture with the wrong exposure with the
D70 comparing with the S7000. Initially the pictures seem to be
underexposed but I believe that the camera does its best to not
blow the highlights.
I have always have the exposure compensation on to overexpose by 1/3th of a stop. It certainly likes to underexpose. The amount of clean data I can get from dark shadows with Nikon Capture's Digital DEE is amazing btw.
I didn’t test the software that comes with the camera, everybody
says it is useless.
It is.

Hey M7, I knew I would find you mate :) I'm still trying to get
used to the camera. I don't have any other lenses yet but I'm
thinking in getting the sigma 70 300 APO that seems to be a nice
glass at an affordable price. Do you know how does this lens
compare with the one you have? What is the difference in price? I
still have to spend some money with a flash, I was thinking on the
SB600, and some filters.
The sb600 is a great flash, and I personally took the 100 bucks I saved over the 800 and bought a 50mm 1.8 lense.

As far as the sigma 70-300 apo vs the nikon, the thing that swayed me was the sigmas macro capability. I got mine for only a few bucks more that the nikon g lense and the sigma has apo or coated glass where the nikon g does not. Glad to see you made the jump.

Oh and m7, I saw some of that bs that was going on over on the d70 forum awhile ago....total bs. Way to stick up for the good ol usa. Besides, theres a little redneck in all of us.

Lots of people have been raving about the new point and shoot curve but I've had Agfa Optima in my camera since day one and never changed. I also use auto WB compensated by +2. Most people use -2 but I prefer a cooler look to my pictures, and nobody ever tells me they're too blue. On a nice day (see my Latino Festival I and II galleries) the only pp I do is resize and sharpen.

Yeah, could you believe that nonsense? And a self-proclaimed U.S. vet, which I don't believe for a second, defending the French guy, who was TOTALLY out of line, and giving ME a hard time? Hey Mystic glad to see you around somepeople have missed you in the D70 forum.....

First off, congrats, G! I knew you'd make the wise choice :-) I'm
currently not posting over in the D70 forum. Seems some of them
think I'm a racist redneck bigot because I wouldn't let a French
guy with a Muslim nick badmouth Americans. Screw 'em! :-) Anyway, I
see a LOT of my old friends are looking towards getting a DSLR. If
it's any help you can go through my galleries (link below in my
sig).
The Miscellaneous gallery contains both D70 and old S7000 shots.
Also, the most recent shots were done this weekend and I wasn't
feeling too inspired so overall you can ignore it. I used the kit
lens on all galleries except "Latino Festival II" and "3 Beautiful
Ladies - Latino Festival II" and the latest gallery "Jazz Brunch",
which again, I was lacking some inspiration, where I used the
cheapo but effective Nikon 70-300mm G series zoom. Most of those
shots are handheld, wide open at full zoom!.
So have a look and hopefully they'll give you an idea of what a
total moron can do with a D70. Oh, btw, the girls in the "3
beautiful ladies.." gallery contacted me and want to buy the
pictures. I'm a pro now! ;-)
Looking EXTREMELY forward to seeing what you do with the D70, G.
Cheers!

I've had the Sigma lens for a few months on my N80 and it has been great a little soft on the wide end but it did take nice pictures. Delta Int had the best price at the time. A friend got one else where onkine paid more and it isn't the lastest version. Haven't tried it on the D70 yet still getting used only 2 weeks old finially finished Thom Hogans book. I ended up with the sb800 flash over the 600 only because of future growth and the rebate made it within range. Looking forward to your pictures and some decent weather here it go out and shoot.

Enjoy and good luck

PS - great comparison information between the s7000 and d70 you are very thorough.

Aww man, why did you have to go and post that? I want one now! :) I was away over new year with some friends, one of whom had the rebel... it was the first time i had used a DSLR and boy was i hooked. The viewfinder and the image quality was enough to make me start seriously looking for a new camera, and i think (well hope) i'll be joining you sometime with the D70.

Thanks for your input and your comparison shots in your other thread. You've been taking awesome shots with the s7000 so it'll be great seeing what you can do with your new toy.

Cheers,

John
This is long text but can be interesting for those who are thinking
in upgrade their Fuji to a DSLR.

When I was looking for a DLSR camera there were only three possible
options, the D70, the Rebel and the 20D. First I started to look
for full sized samples here and there, as picture quality, for me,
was and still is the real important feature on a camera. Looking at
Steve’s web site samples of the Rebel and the D70 I was convinced
that a Canon would be my next camera. I hated the image quality of
the D70 comparing it with the Rebel samples. So much noise and the
full sized crops were so harsh, the Rebel samples were showing a so
smoother image, almost no noise at all. So I narrowed my choices to
the Rebel and the 20D. The 20D appeared to be the perfect choice,
full featured camera, 8MP CMOS sensor, fast startup and focusing
system, but at the end, very expensive. I knew that I would need an
extra lens, not a high end Canon glass, but maybe a nice Sigma
70-300. Oh, an external flash also. Doing the math… out of my
budget. It would be the camera or a happy marriage. My last choice,
the Digital Rebel. So I started looking for nice samples of the
300D. There are tons of fantastic samples of that camera all around
the Internet. Great pictures, buttery smooth images, and a camera
that proved to be a great player, almost two years on the market
and several happy owners. Oh, the Russian hack that adds some
needed functionalities and the fantastic ISO 3200, the dream cam.

So I went to the shop to give it a nice look before buying it. I
have to say that I got a little disappointed. Almost 2 seconds for
the camera to startup, but a fast focus, at least compared with the
S7000. A bit of hunting on moving subjects, but still a very fast
and responsive focus system. But the absence of spot metering was
making me think twice before buying the camera. The 20D suffers
from this same problem. I can’t understand why Canon didn’t add
spot metering to these cameras. And there was another little
problem, the camera built quality. Our Fujis has a really better
built quality, then a saw the D70 on the shelf. WOW, what a darn
solid camera, plastic, but heavy, bulky, a very solid camera. It
didn’t seem to be plastic really, maybe some other better material.
The Rebel is like a toy side by side with the D70. So I decided to
give another chance to the D70. Back home I started to look again
for some samples of the D70. Please, don’t take me wrong, the Rebel
doesn’t look and feel like a cheap camera, no way, it’s a nice
camera but compared with the D70, it has a clear cheaper built
quality.

Looking again for the D70 samples I found some unprocessed images
showing that I was wrong about the D70 image quality. All that
horrible images that I saw at Steve’s web site didn’t has anything
to do with the new samples that I was looking at. The Rebel images
were still smother then the D70 samples, but the colors were so
nice, the pictures ware so sharp and detailed, even more detailed
then the Rebel samples, it seems that the D70 sometimes can show
more noise because it produces slight shaper images than the Rebel.
The camera has so more features, a faster flash sync, a superb
light metering system, instant startup, lighting fast focus, the
kit lens seems to be also better then the lens that comes with the
Rebel, a nice internal flash, a wonderful this and that, many bells
and whistles, so I decided to stop that torture and buy the camera.
There are also tons of happy D70 owners, I couldn’t go wrong. I
knew that if I bought the Rebel sooner or later I would regret, I
would miss a faster flash sync and also lots of the features
present on the D70. Ken Rockwell that may not be the #1
photographer on earth, but a pro and a top of the list name likes
the camera, so I really couldn’t go wrong. At the same time I sold
three pictures, I never thought that I would sell pictures some
day. That money helped me with the decision of getting the more
expensive D70 in place of the Rebel. Now I still need to buy a
70-300 Sigma glass, 58mm IR, UV, ND, and polarizer filters, a nice
flash gun, my Nikon SB22 needs to be retired, and a bag for the
camera. For now my S7000 has been dislodged. Lots of money yet to
be spent.
I hope I didn’t bore you too much. My first impressions of the
camera are on the next post, reply of this one.
