Best Large Harddrive Portable Backup Unit

Which is the most reliable portable hardrive backup unit?
I've read about the Western Digital Media Center, the Seagate and Iomega
models...any suggestions?

There is NO best. All the brands you list are good HD's. What will you put them in to capture you images from your media?

i don't understand your question: i'm interested in having an external hardrive backup of my photo collection (rather than burning multiple dvds)

Just don't totally rely on hard drive as your ONLY archival media. They do fail . Backup your worthy ones in CD or DVD media.

Of the three you mentioned, I would recommend Seagate. I won't trust Iomega.

The big names are all just fine. I wouldn't use removable media. Stick with a good quality drive maker like Seagate or Western Digital. Pick a drive you are interested in the price point you want. Do a google on that particular drive and see if there are any known problems. For basic backup you don't need a super fast drive so you can get away without 8 meg caches and such. Buy a good drive and a reasonble enclosure. No big thing. It is, after all, backup. If a backup fails it's not a tragedy.

What device will you use the HD in? You do need something between the media and the HD.

Iomega doesn't manufacturer their hard drives, I believe they use OEM Western Digitals (been a while since I opened one up) inside their enclosures.

Reliability is pretty equal throughout, with the exception of certain models such as IBM 75GXPs, just remember that you should always have a backup.
