It's not wide enough for all situations so you'll eventually want to get a wide lens too like the 17-40L or Sigma 15mm fisheye. But the 28-135IS is very practical, very sharp and has effective IS.

I really like the Tamron 28-75 f 2.8 XR Di lense. Ask around on the lese forum. You should get lots of info on it. I baught it because of the information I found there.

The Sigma 18-125mm and 18-50 f/2.8 are both in your price range. Personally I find the 18-50 to be a great value. I used to have the 17-40 L and sold it when I got the 18-50.

Even if I also have 17-40, 10-22, ..., 28-135 IS is soooooo useful....
From the lense talk forum i found out that the Tamron 28-75 is a fantastic lens (much better that some L canon) and it comes in a very good price too.Thats my next lens from Canoga.

Canon corrected mistakes they made with the 28-135 IS in making the 17-85. Note that the 17-85 IS has high resolution, but has low accutance - meaning despite appearing slightly more blurred than an L lens, the resolution is actually there. All that has to be done to correct this is to do mild sharpening in Photoshop. When you do so, you get something very close to an L lens, in a very light package.

The 20D + 17-85 IS combination is so good, so light, so compact, I keep it with me almost all the time. It is my walk-about lens. It has caused me to sell off my Minolta A2, my previous walk-about camera. This is despite having a 10-22, 17-40L, 24-70L, and 70-200LIS at my disposal.
