Printing software for mac

I don't believe there is anything for the Mac that incorporates all the functionality of Qimage. I used Qimage on the PC, and I have occasionally used it on the Mac through the use of Virtual PC. I hate doing that tho.

The only program I have found that does some of what Qimage does is Talaphoto:

Does anyone know of or use a good printing software like Qimage in
OS X? Hate to think that we have to resort to Virtual PC to use
this.
Thanks/Anna

I've been out there looking too. It depends on which of the many functions in Qimage are important to you. It has what is essentially a powerful RIP function that polls the printer and determines the 'native' dpi the printer operates at. Then, apparently, it feeds the image to the printer at this very elevated interpolated level, say 400 dpi, on the fly without having to save an entire file. And the interpolation quality is very high, using a Lanczos algorithm. This is what I'm interested in and can't seem to find, aside from thousand-dollar commercial-grade RIP's (raster image processors).

Anyone know of such a thing?

Hi mbryda,

I bought Portraits and Prints a few weeks ago and it's exactly what I need, very easy to fix own templates. However, the prints come out dark and no matter how much I fiddle with bright enhancing the colors and brightness are a bit frustrating. Some more color management would be good in PnP. I use a Canon i9950. Perhaps I should just try another brand of paper. I have a bunch of Epson Premium Glossy and think that matte is better on this printer.
Thanks for the reply. I'm using PS CS and it's not that great for printing.

Anna,

IMHO Photoshop CS is a very capable application for inkjet printing--but it requires effort to learn to use it properly. What printing limitations with PS CS are you encountering? Although there certainly are some limitations printing from PS--particularly things like formatting multi-image sheets and printing panoramas wider than 44 inches--but it's not nearly as limited for printing as some people seem to think.

When printing one picture at a time then I use PS CS because it's convenient to use the same program after editing. However, I like to submit a composition of 20 or 30 photos on one A4 page, and I want the file names to automatically appear under each picture. PnP is really good in this, but .psd files don't look as good as jpg files, so I have to convert. The same problem with Canons Easy Print, doesn't work with .psd. Then the color output is a bit off. I use aRGB, no color management in printer, everything done in PS. Have gone through all the permutations I can think of the last few weeks
I think it's the paper.

FWIW TalaPhoto' s MultiPrint feature automatically lays out a page with cells of any size and can watermark each image with a variety of info, including the image's file name or exposure info.

Happy Holidays,

Thanks Joe, it's an elegant program and I have just paid for it. Going to play a bit with it.

Well a small request would be to make it easier to rearrange the photos. Perhaps if the left panel can be widened so that several rows can be seen at the same time? This would be helpful for sorting and moving. Very nice program, Joe!
Happy New Year!

Hi Anna

I'm working on TalaPhoto's Music Library feature now, and the next addition will be an Image Sorter view which should greatly simplify rearranging large numbers of images.

Happy Holidays,

the following...but first make certain you have the correct paper for your printer.

This specifically mentions the Epson Stylus Photo 1280 so just substitute your printer name and paper type.

Hi Bob, I read that and it works great with single photos. However PS doesn't do multiple pictures on one page in an easy way like TalaPhoto or Portraits n Prints.
Thx/Anna
PS What exactly does Black point compensation do?

Black point compensation maps the black point of the source profile (the image you want to print) to the black point of the destination (printer/paper) profile. You can check a book like Real World Photoshop to get a more complete description.

I, too, wish Photoshop had a faster way to place multiple images on a single page but I haven't found it. However, you may want to take a look at "Help-> How to print photos-> print multiple photos on a page" or open the File Browser and look at "Automate-> Contact sheet II".

Neither method works for me since I frequently want 3, 4x6 on a single 8.5x11 print with a mixture of portrait and landscape images. So I just rotate and manually place them in the final image. Not what you could call an automated method :(

Something I found, but haven't used yet.

Portraits & Prints:

I just stumbled across this while on vacation checking my favorite mac news sites. I might try it when I get back since I've been relegated to dial up on a Windows machine while visiting my family.

By far the best printing software I have found. Does everything I need with the exception of Post Script and will do that as well if I want to part with a few more dollars. After that Best make some good products as well.

In PSCS, under the Picture Package area, you can edit and create your own templates very easily. They can then be saved as a new template for future use. Not exactly asking you to write new code.
