any other S75 owners as ticked as I am?

...I pondered this so-simple-yet-so-profound question over
lunchtime. I reminded myself of these comments that I had made in
an earlier posting (before the official news of the S85):

"Right then and there I realized that that was it. I had already
made my decision. I had already purchased the camera that deep down
I really wanted, the S75, and that decision was over. From that
point forward I vowed that there would be no more second-guessing,
listening to people's criticism of the camera. The S75 is the
camera I really wanted, it is the camera I got, and it is the
camera that I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy, regardless
of the faults it may have."

So, being reminded of my own comments, plus finding that I agreed
with "omaha's axiom": "an S75 in the hand is worth two S85's in the
bush", and I realized where I honestly stand once again.

So, there you have it. The S75 prevails yet again. It's quite a
resilient little camera I'd say.

(by the way, gvh, I did feel that your $500 quote was a very fair
price, and no, I haven't dropkicked my S75, nor even dropped it,
nor do I plan to do so! ;)

Well there you have it... when it comes to the crunch, the whole episode of Sony's cavalier attitude has collapsed. After reading Phils glowing review of the new S85, it looks to be a real stonker (good 'un). No Hud, I am not trying to rub it in and make you feel bad all over again, but in the light of this review, it does lead one to suspect the S75 was merely an interim model to squeeze a few more pips out of the S70. And of course new models keep the Sony brandname in the public domain. The firm cant lose and this kind of thing has occured before with a certain Minolta camera. When a newly releised product is overshadowed by a better product from the same company in just a matter of weeks (and it aint just a case of changing the colour), well public feeling on this matter is all too obvious in this forum.
The S85 looks to be a real step forward for 'non-Pro' type
cameras... it outshines the £1200.00 E10 in some respects...
and all for a few £££'s more than a S75.

I am a happy 505V owner so far, I hear that Sony's customer service
is bad, and if our cameras need a softwear upgrade we have to pay.
Nikon users can download updates from a web site.
I've never had bad service from Sony, although I know that some individuals have.

Updates do not equate with good customer service. If they did, then I guess you could say that some folks keep getting great customer service as they have to download a half dozen updates for their cameras before they work right. :)

Wanting an updatable firmware is perhaps good to have on a wish list. But I'd rather have a camera that works properly out of the gate.

And I've been wondering why such a high percentage of your posts were being quoted.

Phil has the forum messages set up so that you can keep a previous post as a quoted part of your own message. The forum software allocates the "> " symbol as the way to start a quoted section of your message. It colors these as red. It recognizes the double-quote symbols "> > " as a quote of a quote, and these are colored in a mustardy yellow. Your own words without the quotation symbols would be in black.

I "think" that what is happening with your message is that you are beginning many of them on the same line as a quoted line or you are including the quote symbols at the beginning of your message.

When everything is in RED or in YELLOW letters, it's tough to find what you have to say, and we might even skip your entire post if we see no black letters at all. :(

Hope this helps for the future.

Yes, it puzzled me for a while, so thanks for the advice. If this comes up black, ive cracked it.

You were lucky than me.
I just bought S-75 last week.
I feel like I'm dying right now !!!!!!!
I'm dead already.
I spent all my money on this S-75.
How could SONY be so rude !!!!!!!!!

Would you like to sell your S75 at a reasonable discount?
Nice to see capitalism at play, even though profiting from a man's pain! :) (just kidding gvh!)

Anyways just some final thought's about this issue.

1. Why Sony released the S85?

My take on this is probably when they have finalized the S75 they realize other manufacturers are releasing 4mp or higher dc's sooner than expect. Their choices are either staying the way it is (having only 3.3mp dc until 2002) or simply pop in a new CCD and jack up the buffer into the S75's blueprints. Well we all know what they decided. My guess is they make a wise decision and instead of catching up to the pack (if they waited) they can be the leader of the pack and maybe gain more customers. But this also shows if Sony have to choose either market share or owner's interest, market share will play a bigger role than owner's interest. Which is perfectly what big corporations does.

2. Will there be firmware updates in the future?

This one can be both ways (we all know Sony likes to give out surprises). But I'm leading on the never scale. My view is Sony treat dc's as part of their electronics gadgets. Like TVs or CD/DVD players, once out the door the only fixes/upgrades are with the next model (unless major problem exist). I think flushing firmware can be a dangerous if the power goes out of the device that is being flush. The consequence is the whole device is useless and has to taken in for servicing (correct me if I'm wrong). Because of this Sony just don't want to spend more $$ into their servicing department. So what's left for us? The only way I could see is hackers. Unless somebody out there is willing to figure out how the firmware is flush for Sony dc's (my guess is not the memory stick slot or the USB plug but that little rectangular slot between the reset button and the MS slot on my S75) we will not see any user improvements for dc's now or the future.

But I do give praise for their firmware because unlike other maker's it seem Sony dc's rarely (if ever) hangs or have misspelled menus!

So does all this stop me from buying future Sony products? No. Just like deciding on the S75, I would consider price/quality/usability/functions first no matter what brand.

-gel still a little ticked, but will live with the S75.

I bought mine on 5/30 (9 days ago) and still have 30 days open-box return. Should I return it? There's something in me that thinks "no, you're happy enough with the S75, keep it, don't get into another wait". But the S75 already missed its big deadline for me (a trip in the middle of May) and the 8 rolls of film there are over and done. Now I have a long summer ahead of me to learn photography. What's the rush if I could get a better camera by waiting a while longer?

Anyone else going to return their S75 for an S85?
I heard somebody mention Sony Style had a 30 money back return
policy. If this is true and you're really upset about this, why
not return it and wait for the S85? If you don't want to return
your camera and wait for the S85, I don't think you can complain.

This is crap. I've had my S75 in my hands for only 3-1/2 weeks,
and it's already outdated now.

Is anyone else who just bought an S75 ticked off by this news? If
so, please vent along with me. If not, are you nuts?

Please share in the anger (or feel free to disagree with me).

I am so much more angry than this post could ever convey, because I

Sony should do something for us this is outrageous PR They are now ruthless!

So I guess That BOCS update was okay because you didn't pay for it

you must of gotten it before the 90 day warranty ran out. Well Nikon still gives free updates after the warranty runs out for free Also you had to go to Sony to ask for the BOCS update, because Sony does not post update notices. Niikon keeps their customers in the loop.

I want to buy an S85; I have to buy one in less than two weeks, and I won't be able to. So I am not happy either.

The issue with me is not so much the res., its the ability to take 3 pictures quickly. I take pictures of machinery and I imagine that will be very usefull. The Olympus still takes more, and has the voice mode.

If I bought the S85, I wouldn't use the high res that much anyway ... the key is the lens and ease of use, overall quality and the sound stamp ability. The S75 I might still buy that, but whether its cheaper now because of the S85 is debatable. The fact is that the S75 is as good as it was a month ago; in 5 years it will be still as good; then photo stick cards will cost a few bucks and there'll be no issues with CCD quality. The fact is the S75 is a lot better than the S70. Funny thing with me is that one thing I did not like about the Olympus (3040) was the black somewhat old fashioned styling: the

S85 might make me lean towards the Olympus - but the Sony does seem the best for my needs and they are such easy to use and dependable things with heaps of usable features... The S85 means the form factor of the S75 is here for longer too. Sony didn't put a swivel LCD on it either, that may have hurt.

The remote control sounds good on the S85, but its an extra and after a while the batteries go flat and they aren't a huge deal. A bit of a gimmic.

Don't worry, just be glad you bought the 75 rather than the 70 ...

Hi Douglas, just noticed you joined DPR and congrats on your
second post (!). Incidenatlly, have you ever owned or operated
or even touched a S70?

I think the key here is to first figure out what you need THEN buy.

For me, I decided I would wait for Sony to release a camera in the 6MP range, which I figure will be within a year. If they release a 7MP 3 weeks after I purchase - so what.

The fact is, manufacturers a churning out cameras faster than shopping mall painters can paint portraits of Elvis on black velvet.

When you know what you want in a camera and can wait for it, it's kind of fun to sit back and watch all those companies killing themselves to turn out the latest and greatest in the mean while.

But Hud, don't lose sleep over the S75/S85. It is still only a marginal upgrade.

I realize my image quality needs are slightly different from most camera buyers; it isn't that the S75 doesn't take "good" pictures, it certainly does! It's that it doesn't take S70 quality pictures which I need for my specialized use, which is what I relied on. And it looks like the S85 may be more in keeping with the image quality I had come to expect.

I have two weeks to decide whether to return the camera for a refund or exchange for another S75. I'm leaving tomorrow for a trip, and 800.com has extended the 30 days until I get back.

I'm teaching a photoshop class in August which relies heavily on my having a camera for the summer. This is my dilemma. I have a friend with a CP990 who's offered to loan hers to me, so that might be what I end up doing, just putting the whole decision on the back burner until the S85 comes out. I certainly hope the sharpness and noise issues are improved, because I really DO like the S75 in all the other respects, much more so than the Nikon.

One mistake I won't make again is being one of the first ones to buy a camera that's released. I've learned a lot from this forum and everyone's feedback, so I'll wait a few weeks to see how the dust settles. Maybe Frank C. will post some more pics when he gets his S85!!
Is there anything you can do about your present camera?

Have a cup of chai --- on me!! And please let us know if things
turn out better for you.
thanks, U, I'll do that. Now i'm leaving for a working vacation. There really are much more important things than pixels. And things will turn out OK. I'll have a camera in the next few months and I'll love it. It won't be perfect, of course....just sharp!

Does not bother me at all. The rumors were out on these message boards before I bought my s75. Lookig over the review, the S85 does not really offer that much for the extra $100.

I probably would have still ended up with the S75 and as it is I really like my camera -- so no regrets.

Neil -

The only things that irks me is that the S75 did not get the nice charcoal grey color. :-)

You know he will. :))

I don't think he can resist the draw of a 4Mp camera, at least so that he can see if it addresses some of the S75 concerns he raised.

I can understand that there are definitely times when a camera cannot do it all, particularly for special needs such as your own. I hope that it all works out sometime soon for you. I'm sure that it will, in fact. Things always have a way of working out in the way we need.

Hey, René. :)

We're actually probably much more alike in our tastes than different. After all, I'm waiting for my next camera, too. Skipping all present contenders.
