I'm looking at buying one of these guys NEW and I found a few for $120 and that's about the lowest I can find it for. This will be my first lens purchase and I wanna make sure I am not over paying for this lens.

If yer not comfortable with saying a particular amount then just reply with "paid more" or "paid less". if you paid less and wanna help a newb out, please post where your purchase was made if it was a retail purchase.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I bought my older 50mm 1.8 off ebay for 49 bucks, It is made of steel and a lot better than the new plastic lens. . IMO
It is also an AF lens.

If it's $120 from a good independently owned local camera store, then buy it there instead of saving $20 by ordering it online (you'll spend at least $10 on shipping anyways). They have to charge a little more to cover their overhead, but it keeps people in your local community employed and lets you build a relationship with them. In the future, you'll appreciate being able to test drive lenses and other equipment hands-on instead of ordering blindy online.

That would be the only reason I still buy anything from my local dealer. 20 dollars on a 100 dollar item is a 20% mark up. Not very competitive in a modern world with the internet open for business 24/7. If it wasn't for the occasional need too actually touch and try something before I bought it then I would have abandoned my local dealer years ago. He charges 10-30% more depending on the exact item.

I tried both on a film camera before I bought them. I only tested them wide open since it was the low light performance I was interested in. The 1.8 looked sharper on film. I'm not sure if this is also true on the D70.

I feel very confident buying the lens now.

I too used to believe in the whole loyalty to local part, but the only local shops to be loyal to are ritz and a few other places that are run of the mill corporations instead of ma and pop shops. To save the extra $10 ($10 for shipping. :) .) I'll be going online, it's the only way things will be run soon and it'll be used for reviews and the like (like I am doing now, I'm also tempted to go into a shop and see the lens if a local one has it.)

A HUGE thank you goes out to you guys/gals for the outstanding replies to help out.
