I have been researching and reading about digital cameras since December. The cost is prohibitive; therefore, I have one shot. I want to take pictures which will require a zoom (eg. birds on my feeder......30 feet away). I will also use the camera for general purposes, vacations, etc. I am a novice...very excited to learn photography. I want to produce quality pictures (pictures that are close to film quality, or equal to)....regular size, 8 by 10 once in a while. Since I teach, the Summer is a perfect time for me to purchase the camera and printer. I decided to go with the Pro90....then, the Dimage 7 reports came out...now I am confused again. Should I wait for this camera to come out? I need expert advice.....Will the Pro90 meet my needs? Or, will I be sorry in two months?

Thanks, Johnny N

Not directly relevant I know, but I went for a G1 as I felt the Pro90's CCD was not of sufficient quality. Canon must bring out a replacement soon, from what I've seen the Dimage 7 blows it away. I prefer Canon over any other make but at this moment in time I'd go for the Minolta.

I own the Pro90 and I advise you to wait for the Minolta... the Pro90's focus is quite slow, read that the Minolta has real fast AF... you should really wait... as for me I'll stick to my Pro90 who has served me well...

The first rule of buying a digital camera: No matter what you buy and when you buy it, soon there will be something better or cheaper or both.

When the G1 was introduced, lots of people were singing it's praises. Now you hear about the problems as well.

It's true that the Pro90's AF is crude and slow. But when using a long lens, IS is a very real benefit.

I'd suggest waiting until you see a complete review of the new Dimage 5 here, then make your best decision. The Pro90 I'm sure would be fine for snapshots, but then I'm sure the new Dimage will be very nice as well.

I have the Pro90,but I didn't buy it for snapshots.....if all I wanted to do was to take snapshots I would have bought a point and shoot camera and saved alot of money.I am very happy with the Pro90, I would like to see more samples of the Dimage 7 photos before thinking about switching
from the Pro90.......Frank

I have the Pro 90 and I am extermely happy with the quality up to 8x10. I haven't tried anything larger but expect that even 11x14 would meet my needs. The 10 times zoom is very nice. I agree with the focusing issue.

The thing about digital cameras is that by the time the Minolta is released there will be previews of a better camera coming along. You can wait forever. I have been enjoying my Pro90 for 3 months.

Also, don't think that more pixels is necessarily better. You also have to consider the lens and some of the other features. The best feature for me is the swivel LCD. I have been able to take some very unusual pictures because suddenly I can take a worm's eye view or shoot from up high looking down very easily and create a unique perspective.

If your main goal is to photograph birds you will need as much zoom as you can get. Even the 380mm reach of the Pro90 will barely be enough for pictures of birds. You likely won't be happy with anything significantly less than this. For example someone mentioned the G1. I think the G1 is a great camera but is severely limited by its 3x optical zoom.

In terms of the quality of the Minolta, you really won't have a good idea of the success of this camera until a couple of months after they have been released anyway. That is when you start to see issues of reliability etc. If you have already been looking since December, it might be a whole year that you have been waiting and not having fun with your camera.

Take a look at the Olympus 2100. I see a lot of very good shots on the digital photo contest site. It seems to win a lot of daily pictures of the day using the 10x zoom.

Good luck with your search, but be prepared to be disouraged that something better has come along soon after whatever you buy. That is the nature of the technology at this point. The best time to buy a camera is when you need one.

If the Pro90 is a 'snapshot' camera, what is your definition of a 'proper' digital camera?

Take a look at the link below for a couple of "bird feeder" pictures, from about 15-20 feet away on 10x Zoom, through triple glazed window, on the Pro90's "Auto" setting. The 2 Bird pictures were taken by my girlfriend, it was the first time she had picked up the camera!

Here is one I took of a red squirrel. This was more like 40 feet away, in dark woodland.

Hope this helps!

I think new models of all major brands will be coming out with upgrades, etc shortly--I would wait and compare. G1 now getting old. Dimage 5/7 sounds good, Electronic view finder and all, maybe better to wait a few weeks and see what happens.

The Dimage 7 sounds like a fantastic camera. Meanwhile the pro90 is getting a little long in the tooth. If you really need something right away have you considered the fuji 6900? It's out now, almost as strong a zoom and a 3 megapixel imager.

What confuses me is comparing the 90 and the Dimage 7. Two very different cameras and prices. The Dimage is going to cost 1.5 times as much as the 90. What about the E-10 or the D30?

Just curious.

huh?!?!!?

The Pro 90 has been out less than three months. Even in digital camera terms, I would hardly call it long in the tooth. The Fuji 6900 was out before the Pro 90.

You say that the Pro90 and Dimage 7 are two very different cameras. The D30 and E-10 are vastly different than both of these cameras as well. What is your point?

You can always wait for something better than the Pro 90. Wait another couple of months and there may be something better than the Dimage 7 (assuming its better than the Pro90/G1). Buy what you need when it is available or you will never own anything. You will never get burned either, but I assume that you want to have fun enjoy whatever you buy.

Good luck to the original poster. I know that these kind of posts always generate too many conflicting posts to be of any value anyway.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the 6900 just came out this month and the pro 90 has been around since what?...January. I know it's not a long time ago but in the digital world progress happens almost daily. The pro 90 is a capable camera but comapring it to the Dimage 7 is apples and oranges, or better yet yesterdays apples and tomorrows apples if you know what I mean.

I completely agree with your statement: "Buy what you

A snapshot camera can be a proper camera:) Perhaps a better way to say what I meant is that the Pro90 isn't that well suited to some professional uses. It's EX/E-TTL flash capability is somehow crippled so that it only works with Canon flashes, while many pros might want to use Metz or Quantum or the like, the ones that work in E-TTL mode in every other Canon camera that supports E-TTL. Also, while it's promoted as working with studio flash, it doesn't really work that well with it. In Manual mode, which you'd normally use with studio flash, when you set anything like typical settings, the viewfinder gets so dark that you can't really frame, compose, or even see what you're shooting. Although I like the camera overall, I feel mislead by Canon because they promote it for pro use.

So that's why I would classify the Pro90 as a very very good snapshot/amateur camera, but not necessarily well suited for Pro use, despite it's name.

Apart from the limitations I mentioned above, it's a very capable camera with many good features.

Thanks for your reply. I understand your meaning now. I agree with you that for Canon to describe the Pro90 as a true pro camera is misleading. I took Canon's promotion of the Pro90 in this way (which continues) with a pinch of salt and since I wasn't after a professional camera anyway, I haven't been disappointed. Anyway, sorry to nag at you over semantics.

Absolutely, I really like my Pro90. I traded the G1 for the Pro90 and am very glad I did. It is the various features as well as the quality of the pictures that really make the camera. Yes, there will be something "better" with more resolution but as it stand now I honestly believe the Pro90 has the features and quality of pictures needed to last a long time.........

Sorry Frank, you are right. I was thinking of the 4900. I can't keep up with the changes. The Pro90 review was out in Janury but was not released until April. I know, I was one of the first to get one.

That's the point, it can be very confusing but the 6900 is out and available as of June 1. I'm not talking down the pro 90 it's a nice camera. "Hate the technology don't hate the man" if you know what I mean. Today the 6900 is the best available in this range. Not true tomorrow. With the dimage and more on the way you are correct, if you wait you end up no where.

Have a good weekend.

I am getting ready to buy a camera in a couple of days. I have been stuck on the Pro 90IS, is the Fuji 6900 better? Does it have IS, 10x zoom? I have grown tired of comparing cameras.

This will be my first digital camera. I will be shooting a lot of outdoor shots.

Also, where can I buy extra lenses, like a 2,3,5,or 7 times lens.

Thanks for all of your help. This forum is truely awesome. How did everyone communicate before the internet?????

6900 was out before the Pro 90.

You say that the Pro90 and Dimage 7 are two very different cameras.
The D30 and E-10 are vastly different than both of these cameras as
well. What is your point?

You can always wait for something better than the Pro 90. Wait
another couple of months and there may be something better than the
Dimage 7 (assuming its better than the Pro90/G1). Buy what you
need when it is available or you will never own anything. You will
never get burned either, but I assume that you want to have fun
enjoy whatever you buy.

Good luck to the original poster. I know that these kind of posts
always generate too many conflicting posts to be of any value
anyway.

What confuses me is comparing the 90 and the Dimage 7. Two very
different cameras and prices. The Dimage is going to cost 1.5
times as much as the 90. What about the E-10 or the D30?

Just curious.
I have been researching and reading about digital cameras since
December. The cost is prohibitive; therefore, I have one shot. I
want to take pictures which will require a zoom (eg. birds on my
feeder......30 feet away). I will also use the camera for general
purposes,vacations, etc. I am a novice...very excited to learn
photography. I want to produce quality pictures (pictures that are
close to film quality, or equal to)....regular size, 8 by 10 once
in a while. Since I teach, the Summer is a perfect time for me to
purchase the camera and printer. I decided to go with the
Pro90....then, the Dimage 7 reports came out...now I am confused
again. Should I wait for this camera to come out? I need expert
advice.....Will the Pro90 meet my needs? Or, will I be sorry in two
months?

Thanks, Johnny N

Hi bman,

Just before you buy a digital camera is a bad time to grow tired of comparing them! On your question, the Fuji 6900 will probably prove to be an excellent camera, but it is not an alternative to the Pro90 - IF you intend to use the main feature of the Pro90, the big zoom. The 6900 only has a 6x zoom lens (not stabilised). The stabilised lens on the Pro90 makes its 10x zoom eminently usable in all types of conditions. Until you try this yourself, you can't appreciate the difference it makes. Apart from this, the 6900 has some nice features, but it's just not the same sort of camera as the Pro90.

This will be my first digital camera. I will be shooting a lot of
outdoor shots.

Also, where can I buy extra lenses, like a 2,3,5,or 7 times lens.

Thanks for all of your help. This forum is truely awesome. How did
everyone communicate before the internet?????
That's the point, it can be very confusing but the 6900 is out and
available as of June 1. I'm not talking down the pro 90 it's a
nice camera. "Hate the technology don't hate the man" if you know
what I mean. Today the 6900 is the best available in this range.
Not true tomorrow. With the dimage and more on the way you are
correct, if you wait you end up no where.

Have a good weekend.
